It looks like there are a fairly good amount of embankment dirt being built up on the site, just because the reconstruction of Memorial Dr even way beyond where the hills begin look like its several feet lower than the current roadway/original elevation.

BeerNut
Inside the Ambitious Plan to Redesign Houston’s Biggest Park Quote A ten-year, $205 million renovation is transforming Houston’s Memorial Park from a dense and dying thicket into a lush oasis. But is this restoring nature or replacing it?
gene
haha to all the people above Beernut's post! 🤪 and dang, that article...i figured there would be 2 sides to this project but i am excited to see it come to fruition...
Popular Post Tumbleweed_Tx
While moving my (not quite as) fat (as before) carcass around Memorial Park yesterday, I caught this in action... Then I decided the best way to go around the track is clockwise - that way, you don't have to look at The Astoria on that stretch of the trail.. But then again, wanting to get out of that thing's sight range should be good motivation to go faster.... Oh, at the trail is moving about 100' to the north where they are building the tunnels, they need to move the mountain of dirt first. 8
Popular Post innerloop
Daylight Saving Time allowed enough light for me to see all of the dirt that they've piled up on the south side of the tunnels. It's a lot more than shown here. And they're using a fleet of dump trucks to get the job done.
Popular Post rechlin
Here's the big pile of dirt to the south: It looks like they got the dirt by digging a giant hole, maybe for a lake? Also, a new gravel path just south of this opens on Tuesday. It replaces the sections of the Red Trail and Yellow Trail that were lost to the Big Dig.
Tumbleweed_Tx
it looks like all of the tunnel sections are in place, they need the end caps now.
gene
did they finally put in the middle portion of each tunnel? in my head they are leaving the middle for last to keep sufficient light in the tunnels while working before placing the middle portion... as of sunday on my FIVE hour bike ride ( 🤪 ) the middle portions were still missing to connect the tunnels (ps...yes i am sunburned)

The middle portion will remain open to allow what I think is a small creek in between the two hills? That is indeed a question. Either way, all the renderings show it as being open. When it comes to animals, glad they get this land bridge too. I see my armadillo buddy there late at night when I go running. Unsure if it's the same one but I always see him right next to the track near Memorial and am always worried he's going to go into the street. Joggers surprisingly walk right past him sometimes and don't even notice he is there. I still remember laughing so hard when a group of young women didn't notice him there and they all literally jumped in the air screaming right when he was next to their feet. 🤣 1
gene
OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In my head i was picturing it to be just one tunnel but yeah i just scrolled up to the top here to say oh yeah! it is a 2 part tunnel!!! doh! sorry for the confusion and thanks for clearing that up! Now we just need the flared opening on each end then i guess? and haha in the picnic loop there is a little baby armadillo that i catch playing near the side of the road periodically! i have never seen it's parents so maybe you can ask your buddy if they have a missing child!!! 🤪
X.R.
From Reddit: https://www.instagram.com/p/CNG39Nqp8kv/ The second picture really shows how huge this is going to be. Immediately will jump towards the top of "if you're in Houston, you must go see/do X" type lists. If the Eastern glades is any indication (its awesome), I have no doubt this is going to be spectacular. The views alone will make it worth it. gene
Yes great photos! so between those 2 sets of tunnels that is a deep dig going on...so that is going to be water with a bridge(s) over it then? X.R.
The people standing in that pic gives it great perspective. Also, I thought for something of this size it would take years, but they are MOVING. If the endcaps are already on site as they said on reddit, the slowdown in traffic must be helping this along, right? A person working on the project on reddit said they've already brought in the end caps and someone else mentioned "Yeah our company installed the arches we finished the longer sections last week so it’s these two that are 280’ long and I think the longer sections are 420’ long" I checked memorial's page about this, I didn't see actual mention of the length of the tunnels, but that is massive. Just short of the length of two football fields. And yeah, that digging is for the creek that @Tritonmentioned: Edited April 1, 2021 by X.R. 7
jmitch94
One reason it’s going so fast is that the Kinders gave a $70 million donation specifically to speed up the development. 8

I always try to remember that when I see them giving so much. Edited April 2, 2021 by samagon
