Imagine how much traffic a bike trail there would get, directly connecting Memorial Park to Westheimer and Richmond? Looking at the satellite view it looks like that trail could go all the way to the Brays Bayou Greenway and beyond. That would be a major connector in the trails system. Does anyone know if there are plans to do that?

It's terrifying being right up on memorial drive with nothing separating you from cars going 50+ but a small curb. I always worry that someone is going to be texting, try to change lanes and pop a car over the curb and turn me into hamburger meat. Hmmm never really thought about that. Has that actually ever happened though?

Cars jumping curbs and killing pedestrians on sidewalks is a common occurrence throughout the age of the automobile. Also happened with horse-drawn carriages, probably more often. I am not sure if it has happened on Memorial Drive, but would not be surprised. Just about every bizarre thing you can think of has happened in Houston.
JBTX
It's been a while since we talked about the hike and bike trails, but...the fence on the west side of Jensen is now open. Looks like the new bike route through clayton homes to the downtown trailheads and out to the East End is open.

Popular Post gene
Man they are working fast and steady on the land bridge... the old HUGE baseball park/soccer field area is completely cleared like nothing was ever even there and the road with access from the running trails center to the picnic loop is now closed off and they even replanted this giant tree 1/4 of the way into the middle of that old road... the entire volleyball and wooded area between that road and memorial drive is completely cleared as well with workers there early morning to early evening working away! they mean business! oh and heads up...with all the stuff going on (construction, re-configuring Memorial traffic lanes AND the Houston Open going on, this area is to be avoided at all cost unless you are on a bike (like me!) in my opinion... last night traffic was so bottled up that i swear some were trapped trying to get out of the running trails center for 20 minutes or so! anyway...exciting stuff!!! *well except for the traffic part and edit to add one note...due to all the construction the old entrance to the picnic loop is now closed and you are now supposed to enter the entrance that is on Memorial Drive!...so don't get trapped in the exit to the running trails center as stated above since that is a dead end! samagon
I'd imagine since most of this project is just moving dirt around that it will go pretty fast. when they get to the 'tunnels' that will probably slow things down considerably, and obviously for the final greenery being planted.

gene
Yes they just finished a week ago! It took about 2 weeks to build... while i do like it, i am wondering why they then laid/planted only grass on that entire median... it looks nice but super lonely haha!

gene
interesting that you say that... i had mentioned above, yes it is new BUT my first thought which i forgot to express previously is why didn't they have this facing east and west not north and south... as you come up on this in either direction TRAVELING east/west you just see a skinny block of concrete and you have to turn your head to look at it as you pass by to see what in the heck it is...and on top of that, the "Memorial Park" blends in with the monument since its all the same color (just etched in)... i think it would have looked a bit better and been more of a statement turned the other way to actually face you as you drive into Memorial Park...but yep still like it...just hope they eventually do some sort of landscaping on the median or around the monument... zaphod
Even if that monument isn't actually used for anything it's still quite a nice touch. It's things like that which will give the park a kind of timeless feel. It will still be there 100 years from now, assuming someone doesn't get in a wreck and a dump truck hits it next week.

I was thinking the same thing but more likely from a drunk driver. They need to add some huge rocks on either side of it to protect it.
Popular Post EaDo Lou
I biked through the park today and noticed that they have begun installing the pre-fabricated sections of the tunnel. I think this is the east tunnel (the one closer to downtown). It is much bigger than I had been envisioning! It looks like each section is pre-fabricated and installed individually. 3 sections installed so far - lots more to go. innerloop
You beat me to it. And I agree that it looks taller than I expected, taller than a regular freeway overpass. But that's a good thing as the more elevation, the better the views of the Galleria and Downtown.

Texasota
They're not changing the elevation of Memorial Drive itself; they're just building a pair of planted bridges across it. It's hard to say exactly what effect that will have on how frequently Memorial Drive floods, but I wouldn't be surprised if it actually decreases it somewhat.
