corbs315
Yet they're still planning on this "block party" on Saturday...we shall see...
MarathonMan
Midtown sat on that parcel for AGES before actually moving forward on the project. Then, once they did begin construction, it progressed too slowly. Only after it was too late did they throw huge crews on the site to try to finish on time. And because it's become a rush job, we'll probably be left with shoddy workmanship. This project is just one example of Midtown's deficiency in the capital project management department. They've been advertising a Caroline Street re-do for years with zero progress to-date. Bagby park took ages to complete. Improvements to Baldwin Park a couple of years ago were underwhelming, at best. The lighting "improvements" there are already trashed. Disappointing......

Elseed
I drove by the "park" and it looked like crap. Midtown and good 'ole rick really dropped the ball on this one.

Nole23
Wow that's sad. My plan on Saturday was to eat lunch on Main St downtown then hop on the rail to check this out, good thing I didn't. The downtown bars and restaurants were already going strong at 2pm in the afternoon so just stayed there.
urbanize713
They basically made the large field and stage available for the weekends events. The park, if not already closed, will close this week for completion and not re open until later in the year. I thinks its best we hold judgment.

You're correct that we should withhold judgment about the final product. The fact that it wasn't completed is the main bone of contention.
cloud713
Wow. Hopefully not very many out of town guests saw that/thought it was the final product. I do have high hopes for the park though once it's completed. I am looking forward to seeing how the "bayou" water feature turns out.

scarface
Sorry to rain on the parade. This is a gorgeous park and all but does anyone feel as if this park takes away from the uniqueness of discovery green and creates a redundancy in Houston's urban fabric? Or do i have alot to learn? LOL Edited February 19, 2017 by scarface

No... you need greenspace throughout each neighborhood... if I live in Midtown (which I do) then having to travel downtown just to go to the park is too far... plus new greenspace increases land value for the immediate area... there is no redundancy in creating quality development Edited February 23, 2017 by j_cuevas713
monarch
^^^ this newest gem within the houston park's system is becoming a MASTERPIECE with each passing day. props @hindesky for these absolutely gorgeous illustrations......
Twinsanity02
Is this privately or publicly owned land? If it is privately owned will the public be able to access it like Discovery Green or just the residence of the complex?
bobruss
This will be open to the public.

Diaspora
The Midtown park is open to the public, set up as a conservancy (as is Discovery Green). Once it opens (second quarter is as specific as i know) there will be regular, varied and extensive programming for different audiences, much like you find at Discovery Green.

mattyt36
Apologies if this has been answered earlier in the thread, but does anyone know what is planned for the north end of the apartment building on McGowen? It's a pretty huge setback.

bobruss
I just returned from a morning trip downtown. I walked the superblock around the whole space. The park is going to be incredible. The water feature along the west side is so much nicer than I was expecting and the bermed wall at the southern end with the limestone entrance is powerful. They've planted some beautiful selections of flowering and greenery that is just going to take peoples breaths away and to think its right there on Main Street which as everyone knows is never going to get developed. On a stupid railroad. Never work! Truly remarkable. Much more diverse and beautiful than Disco.
