Subdude
This is going to tie in downtown so nicely! I just wish it was going to be ready before the Super Bowl! I'm happy if it is still under construction.  That way visitors can see that Houston hasn't totally shriveled up and died.
Twinsanity02
Good point subdude. Cities with multiple construction cranes exude a certain vibrancy.

houstontexasjack
Think I heard that Lamar was not going to be torn down, or anything terribly drastic and moistly just the interiors rebuilt and renovated. The plan is to keep the North building (the Art Deco structure that was the original building) and construct a new 5-story building along the east side of campus where the tennis courts now are. cspwal
Sam Houston High School https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Houston_Math,_Science,_and_Technology_Center  Until the 1950s the block bordered by Austin, Capitol, Caroline, and Rusk in Downtown Houston housed the institutions that make up what is now Sam Houston High School. Houston Academy was there in the 1850s. In 1894 Central High School was built. J.R. Gonzales of the Houston Chronicle said that the school was "[d]escribed as one of the finest high schools in this part of the country" and "also attracted negative attention for its incredible cost." The school had a price tag of $80,000, $1.9 million in 2010 dollars. In March 1919 the school burned down. A new Sam Houston opened two years later   In 1955, Houston High School moved from its Capitol Street location in Downtown to its current location.[1] The previous Sam Houston High School became the Houston Independent School District administrative headquarters.[2] In July 1970 the first Hattie Mae White Administration Building became the new HISD administrative offices.[3] The Downtown Sam Houston building was demolished. As of 2011 a parking lot owned by HISD now occupies that site.
Sunstar
Sam Houston High School  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Houston_Math,_Science,_and_Technology_Center  The original building that burned down is picture on that Wikipedia page. I found this picture of the one torn down in the 70s:

Popular Post rechlin
Lots more digging today, with a near-continuous line of dump trucks hauling out fill. They are making quite the racket, audible from 20 stories up and a few blocks away! Â
