cloud713
This is getting out of hand.. That corner has been a popular homeless hangout for some time now. Residents and visitors shouldn't have to deal with this crap in one of Houston's most popular parks. Hopefully the city finally starts to do something about it. Quote HOUSTON - There was chaos in Hermann Park Thursday when at least 16 people had to be rushed to the hospital. At least some of them were suffering from the effects of synthetic marijuana or Kush, according to Ruy Lozano with the Houston Fire Department. He said the heat makes the effects of Kush even worse. One ambulance after another responded to emergency calls at Fannin near North MacGregor. There were so many patients, police had to call in extra units to take care of them all. "This is getting ridiculous. So many incidents out here of Kush. Need to get HPD out here stat!" said one firefighter responding to the scene. http://www.khou.com/news/crime/hfd-several-people-hospitalized-after-overdosing-at-hermann-park/253952689 Quote HFD deals with Kush-related problems at Hermann Park almost every day. http://abc13.com/news/16-people-transported-to-hospital-after-kush-overdose-/1398932/

brian0123
I walk by there often at lunch and regularly see these people fighting, screaming, cursing, have knives on there hip... all with an HPD officer nearby and families trying to navigate to the zoo. There's no excuse for why the city has tolerated it.
The Pragmatist
I saw some homeless guy get pushy with a teenager and a lady who appeared to be his mom while they were waiting at the light to cross MacGregor last week as I was driving on Fannin. Perhaps a crackdown is in order. Edited June 24, 2016 by The Pragmatist
HoustonMidtown
I was riding my bike through the park yesterday afternoon while this was going on - I thought it was a SWAT drill or event like that - there were fire trucks, ambulances, and police all over the place - it was crazy.
Blue Dogs
In the wake of 16 people hospitalized from overdoses of synthetic cannabinoids known as Kush or K2, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has vowed to "take back our parks" by bulking up police presence there & in other "hot spots" across citywide. Turner had announced on Thursday an "aggressive plan" in creating a 50-person downtown police patrol division, the transfer of about 175 officers to patrol beats, an overtime program to add roving bike & golf-cart patrols in city parks & the hiring of 13 park rangers. "They are scaring away families & taxing our emergency medical services with their calls for help when they overdose," Turner said. "We can't have people smoking Kush & passing out just feet from where our children are playing." http://abc13.com/news/houston-mayor-takes-aim-at-citys-kush-epidemic/1407870/

If you work at a job that regular drug tests or are on say probabtion then the synthetic weed can give you a similar feeling to being high on the natural stuff. And unlike the natural stuff, it can become addicting to some folks.

ANDROID 26
Looks like the city has heard us and made the presence known. My worry is where have the Kush smokers relocated. Could be something dangerous if we are stopped at a traffic light and happens to be a concentrated spot of this goings-on.

They've moved across Main from the Wendy's, but night and day there are 30+ people just hanging out in a mob, doing lord knows what. I drive by every morning, and they are up and at 'em by 8 a.m. like some scene out of the "Walking Dead." Is it legal to just loiter like that? I suppose it's about as good a spot as any for them to just hang around but it's a shame it's right off of Main St
samagon
That intersection has always been pretty stacked with random loiterers loitering. They may be perfectly harmless people hanging around, but I don't feel comfortable even sitting in my car at that intersection.

X.R.
Ummm wow, did we know this was happening: https://www.hermannpark.org/plans-projects/the-commons-at-hermann-park/ ? That part of the park is my favorite, no one is there and its an excellent spot to take kids or to go chill. Its been our COVID go-to. Which apparently the Park doesn't like, lol: While this sizeable portion of the Park includes a natural point of entry into the Park, it is currently under-utilized and virtually ignored by the public, creating congestion and over-utilization in other parts of the Park. Architect Marlon Blackwell will be designing all of the structures and landscape architects Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA) will help us transform this under-developed area into an inviting gateway and lively community asset. Edit: if you follow those links, seems like the Park spent serious money on some talent with some great creds when it comes to more modern design that involves green spaces/eco spaces within buildings.
