Looks like the Alley needs another bath.

Is this something that is unique to Houston?  I always feel like any buildings that we have with lighter colored stone turn black and I don't see it in other cities.

I would imagine it does occur in other cities, it’s just that you happen to have greater familiarity with Houston so you  take notice of things like that here.

The amount of glass and stone filling the sky towards Market Square is a little disheartening. I like these buildings but am a little sad for what might have been with a less officey feel in the historic district.

this isn't just a Houston thing. go to any city in Europe and find a building that wasn't destroyed by war and it will either be extremely dirty on the exterior, or it will have just gone through a cleaning process.

It was a pretty major redo that supposedly would make it better for gatherings, but it was poorly reviewed from the start.

The old plaza was actually more inviting, plus the renovations killed Party on the Plaza which was something we went to most weeks.

When we lived in London in the early 70's, many of the buildings were dark colored. I went back a few years after they cleaned the buildings, and they were absolutely gorgeous.

We have very similar rainfall compared to Atlanta.  What we have that they do not is a 💩-ton of heavy industry.  I believe that eastern Houston/greater Port of Houston is the largest continuous heavily industrialized area in the country.

The stretch from the Calumet River in Illinois to Burns Harbor, Indiana, is pretty big. We may have them beat, though.

wowsa! i haven't been keeping up with this thread but cannot believe the changes going on...and that plaza, although strange, holds some good memories like when my best friends played there for 1999/2000 new years eve when we knew we were all going to die immediately after the computers and phone were going to blow up 🤪

speaking of my best friends...they are actually headlining this at Bayou Music Center 10/30/21 although to be honest i wish it was going to be at the new 713/POST!:
