“No need to oversell”

Cmon man. It’s the friggin World Cup.

Final Fours are nice. WrestleMania is too.

Super Bowl LI (2017) alone brought in $347 million to our local economy for ONE FOOTBALL GAME

The World Cup is the biggest sporting event worldwide and Houston will be hosting MULTIPLE matches, likely at least a Group Stage with potentially hosting additional knockout round matches. The revenue it might pump in to the local economy will eclipse any event this city has ever hosted in its entire history. It’s a global spotlight we’re fortunate to have. The city needs to capitalize on this massive opportunity.

I agree. Honestly I don't know how we're going to do it with some of the infrastructure issues we have, especially around NRG. It boggles my mind how Texan fans funnel through those narrow sidewalks and it's even crazier that area isn't more walkable simply because of that.

One thing they need to is renovate the Astrodome in time for the World Cup spotlight. This city/county simply cannot have an abandoned building sitting next to a World Cup venue. Do something now.

Yep, that along with rebuilding some streets like Lower/Upper Westheimer/W Alabama and those damn bridge lights. Shepherd should be finished by then and a few big projects as well. To think that if Culberson hadn't been such a loser and killed the University Line, we wouldn't have to worry about an east/west mode of transit for visitors. The BRT lines will barely begin construction around that time.

I don’t disagree with anything yoúve stated.  I just don’t believe there is any residual effect from the supposed exposure of hosting the World Cup.  The economic impacts are real while the events are hosted.

Does anyone have info / news on the old convention center redevelopment?

it has become a make-shift homeless shelter. The amount of trash has also significantly increased.

They put a fence around that raised concrete between the two sides of the road underneath the building.

I received an email today from HSO indicating the Jones Hall downstairs restrooms will be under construction for the remainder of the season.  "Luxury loos" are being installed on the Capitol Street sidewalk and will only be accessible from within Jones Hall.  I'm guessing a pair of the glass doors in front will somehow be dedicated to access the loos!

Edit: curiosity killed the cat!  I drove by to check it out, and yes it looks like two sets of glass doors in front are cordoned off for bathroom access outside.  The entire side on Capitol is cordoned off.20230106_161142.jpg.9899643cfc197b357027c72063414cf7.jpg

Drove by this today and the wood structure is amazing! Pictures don't do it justice. Its something you need to see in person. It's going to be a dynamic addition to the theater district and I would imagine a go to place for a drink after work or before a  performance.

Can confirm, went to the symphony last night and was surprised to be escorted outside at intermission to use the bathroom. They were not luxury.

Yikes

Ha ha!  It’s simply replacing one traumatic experience (walking single file down two levels of stairs to the basement) with another (the unpleasant experience of using a porta potty)!

I am so looking forward to the renovations!

Went to the Wortham last night and discovered the entrance on Texas to underground parking is now fenced off.  I had to loop around and enter on Prairie.  Getting out of the garage also took much longer than usual…not sure if construction related but I’m guessing so.  Oh and parking was $15 instead of $12!  Maybe that’s deliberate to steer demand to other parking garages??

^^ plus the renovations to Jones Hall is very exciting.  Received this email earlier in the week:

The 2023–24 Season will be announced via email on March 28 followed shortly by a full Season brochure and renewal packet!

The new season brings exciting change to our performance home: as part of a multi-year renovation of Jones Hall, patrons will enjoy brand-new seats at the start of the 2023–24 Season. Learn more about the renovation ›

Before you receive your renewal packet, we wanted to note that the new seats will use a different numbering system on the orchestra level. On the Louisiana Street side (stage left), all seats will have odd numbers. On the Texas Avenue side (stage right), all seats will have even numbers. In the center-orchestra section, seats will start with 101. As a result of this change, the seating assignment on your order form may look different, but your physical location in the Hall is the same. View the new seating charts here.
