  1. Good infill. Personally I like the look of it, it fits in with surrounding area. We only need a handful of glass towers in the area in the future.

  2. I couldn't find another topic about this place, but the building at 612 Live Oak that's been under renovation for a while now has signs in the parking lot and what looks like a fully built-out bar inside. An old Swamplot post says it's a co-working space with kitchen and bar. Their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts haven't had any updates in quite a while, but it looks like this place is nearing completion. Somehow I left without taking a photo of the outside of the building, but I got one of the parking lot sign, and the interior through the window (please forgive the awful glare).

  3. I'ma long time reader of HAIF but a first time contributor... I appreciate that Randall Davis tried go outside his comfort zone by attempting a building with a cool design in The Arabella, but what we ended up with missed the mark by a long shot. He didn't have the funds (nor the guts?) to follow through. Now instead of being merely boring, this building is aggressively ugly cuz it stands out. For me, it's right there with The Mercer Condo and 'the Pineapple building.' West Timer hit the nail on the head: It looks like a tornado (or hurricane) hit it and they just decided to stucco white over the boarded up windows... I keep thinking of Chase Tower in the aftermath of Ike.

  5. This area and the Energy Corridor have grown so much ever since the Memorial Hermann Tower and Katy Freeway were finished. Completely unrecognizable from 15 years ago.

  6. Stopped by the site today. That section of Knight road is really nice. The site was previously, partially used for parking. Also see some type of water retention on satellite.

  7. https://www.chron.com/business/real-estate/article/The-Ion-on-track-to-open-in-Q1-in-former-Sears-15382356.php The redevelopment of the former Sears department store in Midtown into a center for innovation is set to open by the end of March 2021, possibly with a full tenant roster, a developer of the project said in a recent interview. "If all negotiations we are in right now end positively, we will have a full building," said Ryan LeVasseur, managing director of direct real estate with Rice Management Co., which is leading and financing the $100 million project called The Ion. The company, which manages Rice University’s $6.3 billion endowment, launched the redevelopment last summer.

  9. Chapultepec doesn't quite get the recognition it deserves as a Houston institution. make no mistake, it's not the best Mexican food in Houston, but it is good Mexican food, especially at 3am on a Sunday morning.

  10. There were 3 demolition permits issued this week for this. Anyone know what's happening here? Loopnet listing https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/1732-1744-Richmond-Ave-Houston-TX/3832638/

  12. I’m sad to see this previously untouched land messed with... for this development? Not feeling it’s worth it.

  14. Are you able to tell if they are still working on the office building? I know they took the crane down. Are they using the other cranes for the office building?

  15. From some angles, it kind of looks like it was hit by a tornado. The white stucco doesn't work for me. I think the only thing that might work is something darker and less contrasty to the glass. Some kind of reflective silver/chrome/nickel or something shiny might work. Maybe not. I think they should just keep painting it new colors every week until they figure out how to make it less silly looking and more artsy fartsy as it was originally intended. If they had just kept whats going on on the top 3 floors all the way to the ground it would have looked high end. What they have looks kind of like K-Mart sushi.

  18. Well, tech and startups are faring better than other companies during this time so I guess I shouldn't too surprised that they would have a full house but...I'm still pretty surprised that they may indeed be full upon open. That would be incredible and definitely exceeds my expectations for Houston's appetite for this development. Also, from the article it seems that these commitments have been there for a little bit, thus sort of confirming our thoughts that the CEO stepped down because she had gotten them to a positive place and wanted to take on some other challenge. Hats off to Rice, the Ion is on schedule and packed!

  20. Rhye is a great band. A few years ago, I stopped what I was doing and bought their album in the middle of their set when I worked with them at Warehouse Live.

  21. Same here, I really have grown to like it and it's large presence in the skyline of the West Loop area. And, the suggestion of replacing the color scheme with blue and grey is just gross and way too "cowboys" for my tastes. This is Houston, we do things a little differently here and don't usually follow the herd mentality. This new 39 story development will definitely be welcome too and will add to an already amazing Galleria Area/Uptown skyline that is very unique in the U.S. in terms of giant cities like Houston in terms of both number of people AND in shear land size of the city and the area. Yes, indeed another reason to get excited about being IMHO the best city in America. No limits.

  22. This isn't true, though. Look for D&Q (Houston's best beer shop), Ono Poke (Houston's best poke), Foelber Pottery (a goddamn institution), Chapultepec, BCN, etc. Appearances are deceiving. This is the Houston I love quite frankly. The Houston that's a little less obvious (and, sure, slightly unkempt) but rewarding.

  24. Yeah I don't really get the hate on the Arabella - I think it turned out pretty good. I honestly wonder what people would think of it if they had never seen the earlier renderings.

  27. Renderings are rarely spot on, but with Rice University owning the land, I think it's safe to say this area won't get the Hotel Alessandra treatment. I don't really care if residential towers come out of this project as much as the area turning into a destination. It'll take years, no doubt, but this part of town has so much potential and I'm not sure there are any better hands to be in than Rice's.

  28. I think I'm more excited about the potential for this area that the collective project may bring than this particular building itself. Yes the Sears building may have stood crumbling for the next 30 years so I'm glad that it is being made use of but personally I think the Reno is underwelming. It is quite different but to me not all that great. For me Texas Tower, the Preston and a handful of other projects around town are my favorite. With over a dozen blocks flanking a transit center WITH a rail way stop this project should be grand. Hopefully it doesn't go the way off Regency Square, Hardy Yards, Downtown Post Office site, Houston Pavilions or the granddaddy of them all- Houston Center. Crossing my fingers that we get a few residential towers built from this project.

  30. I know they are still being built but I hadn't heard the term garden style apartments in a while. I guess I have been wowed by all the new condo towers and midrise apartment buildings that garden style sounds so much like a blast from the past

  31. It looks to me like the ROW would only require taking one wing (or perhaps only part of one wing) of one building of the Midtown Terrace Suites/Travis Street Plaza veterans housing complex. The "A" is indicating the location and direction of the section view shown to the left.

  32. So someone from Lovett contacted me about doing some animation work to promote PostHTX on their website. They referenced Printworks in London and Kraftwerk Berlin. Gives you an idea of the vibe they want for the venue.

  33. according to this article, there seems to be a need in West houston (which they call the geologic center of the city, believe it or not) that will be completed in 2010, at which the old hospital will be vacated and renovated. should make traffic fun there for a couple of years! Especially when you consider the various ramps to/from bw8 and I-10 are to be demolished in the near future. I look forward to this being comleted, though. Should make for an excellent addition to the city.
