Chi-Char-Hou-Dal
I know this isn't yelp. Took a friend from Chicago straight from IAH last night. Had a great time, resonable prices, great food, even better beer. This will be a big plus for the area when Underbelly opens in a couple weeks next door.My friend from Chicago was blown away at the Houston Restaurant scene, remarked if this place opened in Chicago there would be a 3 month wait to get a table - took us 20 minutes. Jax
I took a picture last saturday of all the beer taps.
KinkaidAlum
Went on Saturday afternoon and it was PACKED. We were taken aback at first because the place appeared to be a restaurant that served beer rather than a bar with food. Every space was being utilized by diners and it was slightly intimidating because we were just drinking. However, after about 6 beers each, we settled in!I like the place a lot. I will love it when the newness factor wares off.
Fringe
Went yesterday (Thursday). Got there early enough to get a table. Love this place. Great ambiance, great food, great beer. What more could you ask for? I really didn't think I would like the pig ears but they proved to be very addicting. Hamburger was also one of the best I have had. They cut and grind their own meat so it's always fresh. Look closely at the bricks surrounding the manhole cover built into the wall. They are old city street bricks that were pulled up while excavating the new Dynamo stadium. Loved their water bottles. Big King Cobra malt liquor bottles. ps. Underbelly is having a soft opening this week. Official opening is scheduled for next Monday. Did not eat there but took a tour and I'm sure it's also going to be incredible. Their wine bar is open for business now.
Jeebus
We ate there Friday night. Got there around 8, only took 10 minutes for a table to open up. The beer selection was nice. The food was good as well. We ordered about half of the menu between the four of us to share and sample. Everything tasted like it had been slowly and meticulously made with care, and not just grabbed from the freezer and nuked before plating. The gator fritters stole the show. We ended up having to order extra of those. The burger was advertised as ground fresh daily, and it certainly tasted that way.No d-bags to be found. Mostly young couples doubled up (like us), a few bottom-end corporate parties (think cubicle farm crews), and hipsters. Lots and lots of hipsters! HoustonMidtown
Not sure if this is the best location for this....but the old clothes store that went out of business across the street (attached to El Real) has a sign in the windows that says: Â Coming soon....Adam and Eve Stores -- for those who don't know, thats an Adult toy store !! trymahjong
I wonder what is was about locating in lower Westheimer ( $$$$ rents)that prompted them to "give it a try"- after their sandwich shop couldn't make it at the Velvet Taco location but a concept for "swanky" restaurant will. I don't know. I think Drake's will do okay in the former Georgia James/Underbelly location. As for D.L. Mack's, I don't know how well it will be received in the long run.

It seems like everything in that building besides Velvet Taco has a tough time staying in business. Not sure why, but maybe it has something to do with the way parking is laid out or the Smoothie King next door. Either way, maybe they love the area but felt that that specific building wasn't right. Just a guess.

IntheKnowHouston
Papercity mentions Drake's / Drake's Hollywood's forthcoming Houston location in an article today. As previously noted, the restaurant comes from Dallas-based Vandelay Hospitality. Drake's opening in Georgia James' former space at 1100 Westheimer Rd. "...Drake’s Hollywood, arguably Vandelay’s most high-profile restaurant, is set to open later this year in the former Montrose home of the original Georgia James steakhouse on Westheimer Road... Vandelay purchased the building a year ago and has been retooling the 8,500-square-foot space ever since." https://www.papercitymag.com/restaurants/hudson-house-river-oaks-restaurant-drakes-hollywood-steakhouse-opening-plans/
