trust me, i have personally witnessed these particular and remarkable fetes of mankind many times... especially in dubai, uae.

It's indeed remarkable what can be accomplished when state-sponsored industries have no aversion to employing coercive labor practices that border on slavery.

^^^ you mean to tell me that city officials "CLOSED" down such a gorgeous fountain for maintenance... while downtown is loading up with fans and visitors from out of state for the CFP championship game?  why on earth, wasn't this taken care of beforehand?  my goodness houston!

I don't know about Dubai, but certainly, in the case of Las Vegas, you are comparing private, for-profit, operations with a city operation.  The fountains are a big part of the marketing identity for those casinos and the like. The profit motive is very motivating indeed. Public entities just don't function as well.  The last time I was in Rome, the Trevi Fountain wasn't working.

The other problem with your post is that none of us are in these other places all the time, monitoring their operations 24/7.  All fountains need some maintenance from time to time. It is highly unlikely that the various fountains in Las Vegas, Dubai, etc. are ALWAYS fully operational.

But we're all thrilled that you've been to Dubai AND Las Vegas (or at least are able find lovely videos of their animated fountains on the internet).

^^^ first of all, it is quite evident that you do not know much about DUBAI, UAE.  however, I DO. (since the city and surrounding emirates were like a second home to me for numerous years... during my time working throughout the country and theater of afghanistan respectively.)  however, please allow for me to suggest that you not spend such an exorbitant time of your life upon HAIF trying in earnest to constantly CONTRADICT others... and actually get out a bit more.  also, i have included my original posting for your reading convenience and comprehension.  please note:  i have never stated that all animated fountains do not ever require maintenance.  my argument was with the TIMING of this require maintenance.  the city of houston has known for a considerable amount of TIME, that we were hosting the 2024 CFG and subsequent entertainment weekend. additionally, i have noticed that you have so eloquently stated about the "MARKETING IDENTITY for casinos and the like" well, don't you think that the city of houston, as well as our sumptuous DOWNTOWN MAIN STREET, needs to market itself accordingly with OPERABLE street fountains?  lastly, i cannot help but be so very "THRILLED" that you are hereby so very "THRILLED" that i have been to dubai, uae, and las vegas.  however, judging from your constant contradicting posts and the such, somehow, i guess that i have always known that you @Houston19514 are the consummate, unadulterated... THRILL SEEKER...

Complex systems do break on their own from time to time, even if well maintained.  I'll hazard the guess that Bellagio has a full time worker (or two, or three, or more) assigned to their fountains and a storeroom fully stocked with plenty of anything that can conceivably break, as does Dubai.  Any municipal budget in Texas is spread much more thinly as a matter of course and thus doesn't have room for that, as evidenced by Houston still using Crown Victoria police cruisers (last manufactured in 2011) until very recently.

It also might be due to the weather yesterday. I know in the past these fountains have been closed down when the wind is forecast to be blowing hard from the north. When the fountains originally opened and water rained down on workers walking from their offices when the winds were heavy people were complaining and the city shut them down for a while. It causes the water to completely soak people walking on the sidewalk.

The difference with the incredible fountains in Las Vegas, and Dubai, is that they are out in the middle of a very large body of water, far enough away from the crowds to not be a nuisance or a reason to detour. People go to see them as a tourist entertainment attraction and not a main thoroughfare for pedestrians.

The fountains were down on Saturday, before the winds picked up.  The fountains are supposed to be maintained by the Downtown District.  The Downtown District is also responsible for maintaining the downtown parks, but if you've taken a close look at Market Square Park lately, you will see that this, too, is simply not being maintained.  It's a shame because the District's budget should allow for proper maintenance to be carried out.  You would think they could find a good contractor to keep the fountains running.

I think what was bizarre is that the fountains had been off for several months, they were miraculously restored a week before the CFP Championship game and then shut off for “maintenance” the weekend of the game.  Obviously it wasn’t maintenance.

Anyway I think you guys have made a mountain out of a molehill.  They aren’t that beautiful!  If ABC wanted a beautiful water shot they could have taken the Mecum Fountains or the Water Wall at the Galleria.

I agree, maintenance isn't the issue. It might not be the most beautiful fountain but I think it has potential if the square could draw more tenants. Also that waterwall thing that is never turned on needs to be removed.
