WesternGulf
I'm not entirely sure this is a wise course of action. While quite a bit of foot traffic is being DRIVEN in that direction due to the foot traffic, I'm sure people overall will avoid the area unless they have to go there by necessity. I do think they might do a brisk business from some minor foot traffic from the Hyatt, Marriott, and Residence inn; but I not enough to support it. I find it interesting that the article deemed it notable to point out that it was being set up along the rail.Good point. Hopefully they bring attention the first week they are open. Most people who shop at Macy's never go pass Dallas but right to the rail station in front of the store. I wish it success. I sure as hell will be there a lot. With that said, they sound identical to premium goods out of brooklyn that is in the Village. Edited July 3, 2007 by WesternGulf
roadrunner
I used to have to go to St Louis on business trips. Their downtown used to be a lot like Houston .. When the sun went down, the streets emptied. Some older buildings have now become lofts and you can really feel the difference. It feels like a community... No real retail to speak of except the big old Famous Barr (now Macy's) store. The big suprise was this wonderful little grocery store I found in the middle of downtown. It was like a mini "Central Market" called City Grocers. It is strongly supported by the local loft dwellers and downtown hotel guests, but not nearly the amout of people living in downtown Houston.. Here is a link to their site.http://www.city-grocers.com/show/HomeI could easily see this surviving in downtown houston. It may not be needed but sure would be nice. How many residents will downtown have once One Park Place is complete?
TheNiche
How many residents will downtown have once One Park Place is complete?I'd debate how accurate their figures are, but Central Houston estimates 4,000 downtown residents (living in market-rate units, i.e. not in the Harris County jail) at present. At 1.41 persons per household--their estimate, not mine--the Park Tower would add another 346 units, or 488 people. I've never been one to spend a lot of money on shoes, other than dress shoes. I honestly don't know how many people are willing to buy expensive running shoes, ets. bach
It's a fairly new concept, but one that has been highlighted/written about in US mainstream business mags. Not sure how it'll start out, but if it can make it that long, it'll be a perfect fit with Houston Pavilions and Macy's.
MidtownCoog
The location is a bear. And I think it's going to be hard for them until the construction across the street is completed. And what exactly is "high-end". I already throw down $100 on cross-trainers. How much more is "high-end"?

crunchtastic
Surely everyone is aware that there is a major national department store downtown. Right? I shop at that Macy's; it's convenient for me. Not often, but that's because I'm not much of a department store shopper.
