Discovery Green Park At 1500 McKinney St.

The front page of the Chronicle had a picture of parents actually helping their kids climb on Margo Sawyer's colorful garage entrances. Made it seem like that's what was expected. Is it? I'm guessing not -- and that makes me wonder how long it will be before they have to do somethig to prevent it that makes the art less attractive. Maybe they can try something subtle like gluing shards of broken glass atop the blocks...

Seriously -- unless I'm wrong and those were intended to be climbing walls -- I think it's pretty irresponsible of the Chronicle to publish that picture, at least not without mentioning they're not supposed to do that.

Did anyone touch them to test their sturdiness?

i meant anyone from HAIF. It's possible they could survive a day or two but not the second or third week. If someone from HAIF checked their sturdiness, they could verify that it's not big deal for them to be climbed on.

Are you saying that if they survived OUR climbing on them it woud be okay? Are you suggesting something?

<sucking in>

If Disco Green has walls that can't stand 3 weeks of use, they need to be replaced.

Where the rubber meets the road: today on a weekday afternoon at approximately 1:15 PM, I saw quite a number of people just hanging out, walking their dogs, reading, playing shuffle ball (yes, shuffle ball), throwing frisbees and just being themselves.

It's the off-event/non-novelty attendance that will really mark the park's longterm impact, especially if more residential continues to swell near it.

Walked over to check out the new park as well. Pretty good crowd at lunchtime; the Lake House was not open or they could have done pretty good business.

Saw Barbara Bush getting a one-on-one tour of the park with her Secret Service escort discretely following. She did not get panhandled.

It helps that the weather is perfect today. I hope the attendance keeps up in the summer months. What is Hermann park attendance like on summer weekdays for those who drive by regularly?

I am sure attendance will go down a bit in the Summer... some people just don't like being out in the heat / humidity... those who do go will definitely make use of the fountains, though!

That's surprising... probably ran out of food. ha ha

I agree with Hizzy, time will tell what the attendance will be like. It will be a year until OPP will be occupied enough where the park will have regular visitors from residences.

now as far as the GRB and Hilton Americas, you can expect a number of them to relax there for lunch there. It is a pity the city won't allow a street vendor or two to provide some unhealthy quick fare for people on the go. A hot dog vendor would make a fortune there if they time it correctly.

There was a Rockets game and Astro's game yesterday which made the crowds around that area even more so.

Yesterday at 4pm after working out, I decided to not take my normal jogging route home, instead I jogged to the new park. WOW is all I have to say. I have never seen that many people in downtown other than the Super Bowl. I thought about doing a few laps around the park, but there were just to many people. I went this morning at 6am and not a soul to be found!

Rockets didn't play at TC yesterday. The Astros game was at 6.

It's tricky. The summer is warmer and less inviting for many when it comes to outdoor recreating yet kids are out of school, including college age kids, and so the park may be able to draw more from a group that isn't as available right now.

It really is something that merits close attention to see if a trend can be spotted.

On weekdays?

Here's one of my first photos taken in Houston. This as the end of May on a weekday though (Tuesday) so I guess it doesn't count as summer...

I know for a fact that the park is pretty busy on the days that Miller Outdoor Theater has a concert, but yeah - maybe those are all on weekends, I can't remember.

Is that Vespa Mohawk Man, the dude I always see on Colquitt??

I didn't go a bunch of summer days last year, but every time I did I only saw a few people. Nothing like the weekends.

LOL.

I was wondering the same thing. I see him EVERYWHERE on that scooter. Even saw him on I-59 gunning that bad boy for all it was worth. (he was doing 50, I think)

^I think he runs TNT t-shirt shop off fairview@taft

I think this park is mere decor and less an asset to used by people of this city.

If anything it spruces up our "global" image but forget about hanging around after dark.

I'm sure it will raise land values, but that's about it, till some significant residential factor comes into play.

During summertime, weekday mornings and evenings could be good at Disco Green. One thing about Hermann Park is that it takes a great deal of conscious effort to go there -- a direct intent for recreation. Disco Green, on the other hand, is right down the street from office towers. Now, get a fitness place opened up on one of the adjacent blocks.

Yeah Hermann is not too far for me, but I think the idea is the office workers downtown can use Disco Green instead of going all the way to Hermann (unless they live in the museum district).

How many people work downtown?
