lockmat Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 They have a new map of the park. Thought I'd share Quote
ricco67 Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 I like it, I was just driving by it. I was disappointed to see that the fence is still up and I guess it will remain so until they finish all of the construction. I kinda' hoped they named a tree or two for Biggio and Bagwell along the jogging trail or something. I think that would be a nice dedication. Quote
crunchtastic Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Has anyone been to the Grove patio for drinks? Can I ride my bike over in unfashionable shorts and t-shirt and go mingle for a refreshing vodka? I'd guess they don't care, being a park and all. But it being cool and new in Houston, maybe I need to be on the guest list or something. Quote

Anyone know if Treehouse is open? Quote

But it being cool and new in Houston, maybe I need to be on the guest list or something.been to the grove a few times at night, once for drinks, twice to eat - has always been more fashionable for the dinner crowd for sure. don't think the shorts and t shirt would do too well in the downstairs bar, but i think during the day that's probably different too. the treehouse upstairs is pretty cool in my opinion. that deck is pretty large and its nice. one of the pics someone had was from the upstairs portion, and i can definitely see sitting out there during the day having a few drinks and it not being fancy at all.the other part that i think opens soon (the lake house) will also have beer and wine and i think that is very casual over there too. dbigtex56 Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Also curious about the "Treehouse"... the roof bar on top of the Grove. Haven't heard anything about either. Anyone know if Treehouse is open?Treehouse was open this past Saturday night, during the concert. Great view, tretcherous stairway to negotiate if one inbibes. The park looks like it has a great deal of potential to become a draw for downtown. Among the attractions listed was "interactive water features", which I'm guessing means it's OK to pee in the fountains.Anyone know the identity of the statue just outside the Grove? It's a dignified looking bronze man who appears to be playing pocket pool. Quote
NewMND Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Waste management garden?Waste Management is sponsoring one of the gardens. It's one of the smaller gardens though, so I wonder if the size of the garden indicates how much someone donated to the project. Quote
713 To 214 Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Waste management garden?Doesn't sound very appealing, does it? Quote

I kinda' hoped they named a tree or two for Biggio and Bagwell along the jogging trail or something. I think that would be a nice dedication.I've been able to crisscross the Crawford promenade a few times since that part seems to be open. I've seen others come in from an entrance along Avenida de las Americas as well, so I'd guess they're ok with people crossing the larger, open areas at the moment. Check it out! Quote
Jax Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 I tried to make reservations at the Grove tonight and they are apparently totally booked all weekend. I guess that's a good sign. but it sucks that I can't take my mom there while she's in town. Quote
Trae Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 When does the underground garage open? I'm going to a Rockets game on the 18th and want to use it. Quote
houstonmacbro Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 Question: Is WiFi working down there yet? I'd heard they were gonna have WiFi. Quote

ToolMan Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 I went to the Treehouse last night and it was very nice. This will be a perfect spot on a Saturday/Sunday afternoon for a few drinks. I just hope it doesn't turn into a LaStrada crowd. Quote
ChannelTwoNews Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 This morning, they began installing the Monument Au Fantome at the entrance to the park near the GRB. The largest piece was already standing and some of the others looked ready to be placed. 1 Quote
wernicke Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 All the reviews for The Grove I have seen online have been pretty luke-warm/bad... has anyone gone and had a good experience? Does it take time for a restaurant to get its groove? How expensive is it? Quote
ricco67 Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I've heard several good reviews for it and it has been improving. One of the misconceptions that they're trying to shake is that it's VERY expensive to eat there, but from what I've been told, you can have a meal for under $20 a person. Quote
Jax Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I haven't read any bad reviews yet. Most of them are good or mediocre. The place is impossible to eat at without a reservation, that's a good sign. Quote
lockmat Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 you can have a meal for under $20 a person.Guess I'll have to save my visit for a very special occassion. It sure won't be regularly visited by me Quote

The place is impossible to eat at without a reservation, that's a good sign.5/13 reviewers on citysearch said it was one of the worst dining experiences they have ever had (which isn't a very good percentage)... although 6/13 were very good reviews (although I always wonder if gushing reviews are written by people affiliated with the establishment). ricco67 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 looking at the Grove's Website the menu seems reasonable. I might check it out sometime during the week for a lunch or something. Quote

I've had maybe two experiences in my life where I thought the service was just terrible. Quote
houstonmacbro Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Prices aren't bad, but I don't think I'll be beating a door to them for their $12 hamburgers. Quote
Jax Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 I prefer Yelp to Citysearch in general. Check out the Yelp reviews: http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-grove-houston Quote
tomv Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Does it take time for a restaurant to get its groove? Maybe the Grove still needs to Grow into it's Groove! Quote

Jax Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Yeah it hasn't been around as long as the other sites but its growing pretty fast. Quote
jgriff Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 I went a couple of weeks ago. The menu is creative, you'll find some unusual things like duck meatballs.I had a NY Strip. It was not up to high-end steakhouse standards, more like Outback or Salt Grass. It's not a steakhouse though so I can forgive them that. It's a hot-spot right now but I think eventually it will wind up being a place for conventioners that are staying downtown to go. There are too many good restaraunts in Houston to go to the trouble of going downtown for just so-so food. Quote
travelguy_73 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 (edited) We went to The Grove a number of weeks ago. I really liked the aesthetics of the interior, the music, and the crowd. I was less impressed with the menu (just couldn't find anything I wanted), and the service was quite poor. We had a party of 8 and they put us in the "party room," which was their overflow room. The room had a banquet hall feel (not very decorated, no music piped in, very detached from the rest of the restaurant), and there was only one other large party there. Once they left, we were the only ones in the entire room. And this was with a reservation. I'm sure they will remain popular, but it isn't a place I will frequent.
