I've read that in the 1930's people used to go to air conditioned movie theaters just to escape the heat (and regardless of what was on the screen). My Dad and his siblings would talk about going to the movies on Saturday in the 30's, and how it was the only air conditioned space anywhere close to their house. As a kid, I remember visiting there and seeing the fading paint on the side of the building saying something like "cold air inside".

hindesky
The parking lot was almost completely full by the Acme. No one on the outside patio though as it was kind of cool to be outside.

Texasota
It doesn't help that ACME is also a deeply mediocre chain of grocery stores in the Philadelphia area, and they use pretty much the same red.
IntheKnowHouston
Acme / Acme Oyster House closed its Houston location today. The restaurant was located at 1201 Westheimer Rd in the former Tower Theater. Below is the announcement posted to Facebook today: https://www.facebook.com/AcmeHouston/posts/pfbid0m7x8E8CvutWRvMoyv5d8pxHTN7r8L3noV8nGpoBnKRHHdbSaHeK2xaPFEgnSZj1xl Edited December 7, 2023 by IntheKnowHouston
hindesky
I never saw that many cars in their parking lot so I was worried they may not survive. There are too many seafood restaurants close to this location and Houstonians never seemed to embrace them.
gene
another reason was that the food just wasn't great and the service i had multiple times was horrible...even when sitting at the bar. bye and hope something really good takes over this awesome location!

IntheKnowHouston
In Houston Chronicle's reporting of Acme / Acme Oyster House's closure earlier this week, the publication notes this: "...the restaurant announced the closure was effective immediately, citing struggles in staffing, sourcing product and inflation. Additionally, it pointed to a stalled mixed-use development to the east that caused its hospitality neighbors to close in the past year." Houston Chronicle spoke with Acme's director of marketing Monique Ricci about the Houston closure. According to Ricci, "[Acme] wanted to come to Houston for more than 10 years before opening in 2021. They signed a lease for the space pre-pandemic, and had high hopes for what it would become as they had seen rendering for the mixed-use development. She said they expected the development to be further along than it is now, a blank concrete space." Acme was located 1201 Westheimer Rd. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/food-culture/restaurants-bars/article/acme-oyster-house-closes-houston-18540678.php

Specwriter
What a novel (pardon the pun) idea - a bookstore in an old movie theater. Actually, that should be something very welcome in the Montrose as long as it was not just another Barnes & Noble. It doesn't have to be only new, commercially popular books. I suggest a specialty bookstore like those mentioned in this thread:

I miss The Bookstop!!!!!!!!!! Gene, I should have mentioned the Alabama Theater/Bookstop in context for those who may be new to the city. Thanks for the clarification. I visited the Alabama several times when it was a movie theater and a bookstore. I stopped in Trader Joe's once when it first opened but not since. I cannot say if I ever saw a "picture show" at the Tower Theater though I did see "The Girl in a Swing" starring Meg Tilly at the River Oaks when it was released in 1988.
