That's true for residential air conditioning. Some very wealthy people may have had it,but it wasn't until the 50's that residential units were mass produced and affordable for the working and middle classes.
I've read that in the 1930's people used to go to air conditioned movie theaters just to escape the heat (and regardless of what was on the screen).

My Dad and his siblings would talk about going to the movies on Saturday in the 30's, and how it was the only air conditioned space anywhere close to their house. As a kid, I remember visiting there and seeing the fading paint on the side of the building saying something like "cold air inside".

In Houston Chronicle's reporting of Acme / Acme Oyster House's closure earlier this week, the publication notes this:

"...the restaurant announced the closure was effective immediately, citing struggles in staffing, sourcing product and inflation. Additionally, it pointed to a stalled mixed-use development to the east that caused its hospitality neighbors to close in the past year."

Houston Chronicle spoke with Acme's director of marketing Monique Ricci about the Houston closure. According to Ricci, "[Acme] wanted to come to Houston for more than 10 years before opening in 2021. They signed a lease for the space pre-pandemic, and had high hopes for what it would become as they had seen rendering for the mixed-use development. She said they expected the development to be further along than it is now, a blank concrete space.

Acme was located 1201 Westheimer Rd.

In the Houston Chronicle article about Acme's closure earlier this month, the following was noted:

[The former Tower Theater] was recently acquired by Radom Capital, the development firm behind mixed-use space Montrose Collective, among other properties.  Managing principal Steve Radom said they have not identified a replacement tenant but several businesses have reached out and expressed interest in the Tower.

In a statement to Houston Chronicle, Radom Capital said the following about their plans for the former Tower Theater and the adjacent parcels acquired:

"We are excited to be the new stewards of such an iconic historic Houston building. We are planning on thoughtfully remodeling the adjacent buildings over the coming year with a focus on layered landscape interventions, minor façade and canopy renovations, and improving the lighting and project signage," he said via email.

According to recent marketing materials, Radom Capital is seeking a new tenant for 1111 Westheimer Rd. Currently, adult entertainment chain Adam & Eve occupies the space. Leasing materials indicate the space will be available February 2024.

As for the next tenant to fill the space, Radom Capital is looking for a restaurant tenant.

1111 Westheimer is on the hard corner of Westheimer Rd and Yoakum Blvd. It's sandwiched between the former Tower Theater at 1201 Westheimer and Kung Fu Tea at 3224 Yoakum Blvd. The space is 4,331 sf.

Marketing materials specify the building's facade will undergo a redesign.

Radom Capital is seeking a new tenant to fill the space at 3224 Yoakum Blvd. I think Kung Fu Tea has occupied the space since 2015.

Leasing materials indicate the space is/was available as of November 2023.

Radom Capital is seeking either a restaurant or retail business for the 1,931-square-foot space.

What a novel (pardon the pun) idea - a bookstore in an old movie theater. Actually, that should be something very welcome in the Montrose as long as it was not just another Barnes & Noble. It doesn't have to be only new, commercially popular books. I suggest a specialty bookstore like those mentioned in this thread:

Gene, I should have mentioned the Alabama Theater/Bookstop in context for those who may be new to the city. Thanks for the clarification. I visited the Alabama several times when it was a movie theater and a bookstore. I stopped in Trader Joe's once when it first opened but not since.

I cannot say if I ever saw a "picture show" at the Tower Theater though I did see "The Girl in a Swing" starring Meg Tilly at the River Oaks when it was released in 1988.

I look back to that time and realize how lucky we were to live in Houston then...truly loved Houston and that area. It's a HUGE part of my childhood to adulthood.... really miss those days for sure!
