The full piece from Rice... http://news.rice.edu/2014/03/17/rice-universitys-shepherd-school-of-music-announces-diller-scofidio-renfro-as-architect-for-new-opera-theater/ This project is one I'm looking forward to more than others in some ways, chiefly because it actually has a local person and Rice alum at the helm of the project team for architectural firm involved. I hope they actually do the university and their hometown proud on this one.

Ford Atkinson retiring from KRIV-TV Fox 26
ChannelTwoNews replied to Blue Dogs's topic in Houston Television
No? Those examples span the course of about 15 years, so I don't think referring to a GM as a "dictator" that "drives" people away from somewhere makes sense. I don't recall the issues with the late Mr. Smith (2000) and the whole Mike Barajas thing (2011) was said to be "mutual", but I do remember Cecilia Sinclair (2007) left to take care of her special-needs child.- 2 replies

Fiesta's page for the store is still up for the moment. When I was living in the area, this was my go-to place for groceries in the dead of night when it was a Gerland's. Quiet, clean, and the people were actually cool. The fact that they regularly left the samples out in the bakery counter overnight - and they were still in decent shape - played a bit of a role too. Don't judge me. And it was about the closest place I could find the Houston Business Journal on a regular basis. That went fast some weeks though. When I came back to visit in the recent past I had heard about the change to this special Fiesta brand and it just seemed a bit odd. Never really felt compelled to visit it though. My hometown has had a Fiesta since the 70s, and I wasn't looking for a "hip" or modern version of the experience, so it's not too much of a surprise this one fell flat.

Well, the further information ruled out my guess of a Monterey's that used to be on NASA Road 1... but even then, I recall it being a pleasant evening at around dusk when I ate there 20 years ago. I don't recall the direction of the wind, however. One restaurant I do remember trying and liking was Camino Real at Westheimer and Westhollow Drive, near Highway 6. I think it was open only for a really brief period in the mid or late 90s, but the food was pretty legit. Part of the appeal though was that it seemed to be a sister of another Camino Real restaurant in Rosenberg, where I grew up. Both had about the same menu and prices and carried the same slogan: "The best enchiladas you NEVER tasted". It folded before 2000, and I'm not even certain if the same strip center is still there. Google maps shows a strip of similar size, so maybe it was just drastically renovated... The one in Rosenberg opened in the mid 90s and survived into the 2000s. It later became a Los Cucos, and has become another Mexican restaurant since.

They were pretty quick in getting it re-situated. Looks like it was done between 3:30 & 4 yesterday afternoon.

53-Story Office Tower Planned For Midland

"Energy Tower rumored to become two smaller towers" http://www.mrt.com/business/article_da8d0ba2-b2e3-11e3-bda5-0019bb2963f4.html -
Perhaps it's a partial or modified revival of the plans for the site from the last boom? At the time, the hotel was projected to be 21 stories, with a Willie G's, and a resurrected proposal for an office building from the late 90s/early2000s, which ultimately died again. We even had a thread for it at one point... http://www.houstonarchitecture.com/haif/topic/15076-new-20-story-tower-on-west-loop

So, it does have a name: The Village at Palm Center. The link also shows how the townhomes should appear with the apartment building. http://itexgrp.com/property/village-at-palm-center/

$59-Million Desalination Plant
ChannelTwoNews replied to trymahjong's topic in Coastal Prairie and Bay
It is interesting. Wasn't aware of anything tied to desalination being proposed in the area. Any further specifics? The website for The Facts doesn't have anything about this right now... -

It's an estimate based on the relevant data. Once enough data fields are filled out, the number is generated. Not sure of what the actual figure is, but I don't think it's too far off.

History of cable and satellite tv in Houston
ChannelTwoNews replied to Howard Huge's topic in Houston and the Media
I don't think it was MTV that was scrambled as it was always available at my house from what I remember, and my parents didn't pay for any of the premium channels until later, when they bought a converter for Disney Channel. Back in the late 80s & early 90s, Ch. 5 was HBO, Ch. 16 was Showtime, Ch. 17 was Cinemax & 22 was Disney. At some point in the mid or late 90s, The Disney Channel was added to the basic lineup. The game for the former 2 was to always see if you could make out ANYTHING that was happening, which happened to varying degrees of success. KTFH, KXLN & KTMD, I think, were only added to the lineup in the early 90s, like around 1991 or 92. That was about the time when they finally grouped the locals together on the lineup. One of the neat things about Jones Spacelink was Ch.2 - ME/U - Mind Extension University. It was mostly college courses and different associated programming but I liked that they aired Deutsche Welle news in several languages at a certain time in the evening as well as a Russian newscast, even if all I could understand was the English language DW newscast. Jones Spacelink became TCI Cablevision in the mid 90s, then Time Warner later on, and is presently Comcast. Pretty much a downward trend IMHO. -
