  1. And yet, it's 8 feet taller? At least it's now only 10 feet shy of the 500' mark, if it matters. 482' bumped to 490' or thereabouts.
  2. Neither Austin or SA have a more popular (and honestly, a more interesting or better informed) alternative like HAIF or DallasMetropolis. I prefer HAIF, but I update some of the Houston stuff on SSP at times.
  3. Some quick shots from yesterday, New Year's Eve. Looks like they're between the 3rd & 4th floors of the main tower and a portion of the garage is close to making street level.
  4. Don't forget "Stonehenge" and it's garage across from the Meyerson. That's been sitting there for about 20 years just waiting to have the rest of something built on top of it!
  5. Photos from this afternoon... Nearly complete underground garage Starting to rise over DG
  6. It's happened to me before, and usually it's down for a few days to a week at most. Should be back in short order.
  7. There's a bit on it in today's Chronicle business section... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/busine...ff/6174851.html
  8. This might as well be merged with the existing High Street thread since the entire piece is solely about that project. Curious as to what will become of the first structure that was started. Looked like they had finished putting up the building's framework and were about to start working on the individual floors.
  9. http://houston.bizjournals.com/houston/sto...1.html?ana=e_ph So maybe rent-a-cops on golfcarts won't feel the need to annoy certain photographers anymore?
  10. If I could, for a moment, just head back to 1987 for some perspective. The oil and financial industries were in crisis, vacancies for office space (counting all classifications) in the core were in the mid-to-high 20% range, and the GRB had just opened. Had a pretty decent party too with fireworks, a concert, tours and a big ribbon cutting ceremony that meant a heck of a lot more since the state of the local scene was so dire. It was also, apparently from the articles published in the Post then, a nice finger in the eye to the chair of the Democratic Party who had snubbed Houston in favor of Atlanta due to concerns about the facility not being able to open on time for the 1988 DNC. Even after the city had offered a $5 Million insurance policy from Lloyds of London to assure them that it would be ready. At the time, essentially the only development that was pitched on that side of downtown would've been a 40+ story, $100 Million Dollar convention center hotel that would've opened in the early 90s. Guess where it was to have been built: A majority of what is now Discovery Green, from what is now the Crawford Promenade, all the way to Avenida de las Americas, wiping out Lamar and McKinney south of what was then Crawford Street. It was, at the time, known as "The Superblock" and was never intended to be a park. It was a placeholder property donated by Texas Eastern and there were always plans to build office space and a hotel regardless if it were the city's development or another outside entity. I say all of that to say this... I'm not a Polyanna when it comes to development or anything, nor do I know anything specific about the blocks where the residential or hotels would be located, but 30 years or more is a bit far-fetched, given what can happen in just over 20. Edit: Or yeah, what Red said.
  11. Some larger snaps from KHOU's newscast this evening...
  12. A couple of photos taken from the Chase Building's roof during this morning's tour. Discovery Tower... ...and the portion of the second block being cleared for the garage.
  13. Photos from today... Probably the only pic I'll ever get of the site from this vantage point, but I shot this from the rooftop of the Chase Building (Old Gulf) during this morning's tours.
  14. I'd guess that would be the case. Half of the undeveloped block across from Camden Travis (which may or may not be the Superblock project someday) that started with the one trailer now has been completely cleared out and filled in with more trailers and equipment and the fence has been blacked out. I'm guessing it's the staging area for the Travis project for the forseeable future.
  15. It was a heinous amount of luck that I parked along La Branch in front of the lot when I did. Originally, I only intended to get some photos of the OPP construction. BTW, it was apparently someone from KHOU who was putting together the report since they just teased it for their 6PM Newscast.
  16. That figures. The HBJ "daily brief" regarding the story was almost a verbatim parrot piece from Sarnoff's Chronicle article, both of which were repeated with the same points on the radio this morning.
  17. So this was completely coincidental, but I managed to get these quick snapshots while walking around DT at around 11:30 this morning. I don't know who the reporter is but the man is Nick Massad who is the president of American Liberty Hospitality, the developer of the project. The rendering doesn't look to have been updated, so take that for whatever it's worth.
  18. According to this week's HBJ article on the state of several mixed-use projects in the current economy, construction is slated to begin in the second quarter of next year. The delays were supposedly, according to the article, to allow for more time to refine the design of the development. It also mentions that the office at 1203 Dunlavy will be the marketing center which will "open in December, but won't officially launch until February". 19. Third crane went up earlier this weekend. From the webcam...
  20. Considering it lost only 3 floors from the original proposal, that's progress compared to what's happened to other projects in the past.
  21. So it's 19 stories now? At least the construction loan appears to have been approved. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/busine...ff/6126669.html
  22. From around midday today, moving onto the second floor... Base for the third tower crane.
