  1. In addition to the one there & in Rosenberg, I think I recall seeing one up in Humble and maybe one off 290 around the Cypress area. Maybe they're trying to move back toward the city at this point. I also saw a mention of Panjo's Pizza... A friend of mine took their kid to a birthday party at a Panjo's in Rockport maybe a year or two back, so was Panjo's a chain at one point or was the place down there somewhere that just decided to use the old name?
  2. Two of the three larger towers which were originally planned were cancelled. The only relatively 'substantial' one, though scaled down was kept and that is shown. I'm not certain why the dates are incorrect though... but that's what you get when most of the other editors aren't even up on the projects in the area
  3. Just curious, how many floors is that building? That weird upper floor always threw me off a bit.
  4. Interesting hearing about that office building as well. I recall seeing early plans of the site from maybe '00-'01 that seemed to feature a bit more office space (on the order of 3 6-10 story buildings IIRC) as part of the initial building process. Glad to see it's finally emerging around there.
  5. Height (tip) 430 ft Height (main roof) 377 ft Height (top floor) 361 ft The data from Emporis for the building is apparently sourced from the blueprints that were in the construction trailer on-site at the time. Wouldn't mind having a copy of 'em now that I think about it... I'm working on cleaning up some of the data for a number of the buildings, so hopefully things will be a bit more accurate in the not too distant future. Trust me, it's a bugger to some of us that can't make immediate & obvious corrections as well... but at least it isn't like wikipedia when it comes to editing.
  6. Great shots! Just wondering if you ended up getting bitched at by any of the rentacops on-site at any point during your photo series...
  7. The photos used for the exteriors of the 'standard' Hyatt Place hotels on the locations section of the brand's website appear to look like rehabbed AmeriSuites hotels for the most part. Not terribly inspiring... but hopefully there may be something a bit different if something like that brand were to emerge in Sugar Land.
  8. This is a $1.5B 2,000 acre mixed use development at the intersection of GP & FM 1464: http://www.globest.com/news/908_908/houston/160716-1.html
  9. Looks new. Three of the other renderings have been updated to show the lone office building while one looks to feature part of a building that was cancelled.
  10. The website seems to be active for the project now: www.highland-tower.com. The plan seems to show it in the northeast corner of the High Street development... though I can't say I've heard of that surrounding "Oaks District" project before.
  11. Looking through some of the old photos of freeway construction, I've noticed a 9-story or so building adjacent to the Sam Houston Coliseum. It's to the left of it in the photo below. I'm going to guess that it was demolished for the Albert Thomas Convention Center since the site appears to be at the corner of Bagby & Capitol. Seems to be gone from the 1970's era photos posted on here as well, so that begs the question as to just what it was... http://www.texasfreeway.com/Houston/historic/photos/images/i45_downtown_aerial_5_1961.jpg
  12. The white building? It's called Energy Tower I, and it's located at the intersection of Old Katy Road & N. Kirkwood. It was built around 2000 or 01. Awesome pix btw, kinda home sick now... haha
  13. Fayva, the shoe & fashion boot retailer Sutherlands- Why'd it disappear from the Houston area? I'm pretty sure they're still around in a bunch of other places. Definitely recall seeing a huge one in Corpus that was still open on my last trip at the end of last year. Bookstop, before it was reduced to one store. Always loved hanging out at the one in Sugar Land... wonderful staff and selection. Both of which eventually tranferred to Barnes and Noble when that opened later on. This location was adjacent to another old Houston furniture store, Plantowsky's. I'd make the same arguement for Cactus before it was only one superstore... My favorite was the one along S. Main near the Astrodome.
  14. Budget Chopper, which was a division of Brookshire Brothers. Minimax/Continental Finer Foods/Holiday Foods/Lucky 7 I think were owned by the same company in the end. Moore's which (at least in Rosenberg) became Price-Lo Foods. Palais Royal eventually took over the site when the grocery store folded. Bill's Department Stores, which seemed to be the Dollar General of it's day. Not sure if one or two surviving stores exist, but I remember seeing a sign in Sealy or Bellville in the not-too-distant past. Remco. Can't forget the goaheadandgetit store... I think a bunch of those became Magic Rent to own along the way. Miller's Outpost. All sorts of 'unique' promos with those stores. Kuppenheimer, later Eagle comes to mind. Forgot the name of the guy that was always in the commericals tho...
  15. Darn, and I was thinking "Caption Contest" material for this.
  16. Early to mid 80's? GRB, a decent portion of Houston Center and few other things are missing. Inn at The Ballpark also has the old WTC facade in this shot too.
  17. Weren't all of the surviving Wyatt's purchased by Luby's or did things progress in another way? I remember our Wyatt's along Avenue H in Rosenberg, right near the Richmond town line. It must've been built in the early-to-mid 80's based on what my parents remember. I think that was the first really nice, big and clean restaurant I'd been in in the city. They used to pass out gift certificates for free kids meals to us for perfect attendance at school. As Luby's it is just as nice, complete with drive thru and everything. Old photos of the area still hang on the walls... only the color scheme is really the only different thing at this point.
  18. I think it's odd the JC Penney isn't mentioned in any of this stuff... The last time I was in town, the second portion (South side of 59 along Reading Road) looked cleared and prepped for the construction. I'm not sure of dimensions, but the signage said the Penney's and Academy would be placed there. Another development at one of the city's other main exits would be the "Rosenberg Town Center" project. The sign's been there since the end of 2004, and with the other TC and other scattered developments in town and along 59 popping up, I'm just surprised nothing more's been mentioned about it by anyone.
  19. I have to agree to a certain extent. It may be functional and simple, and even visually appealing in a way. On the whole, it's pretty boring though... As for the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, it looked to be the least "Federal" looking of any of the Federal buildings out there. It had a decent sized plaza, tons of windows, and seemed more accessible than others. The transformation into the memorial grounds is remarkable though, and the plaza still looks well preserved. It's good to see that it's replacement is still different. It's sheathed in glass, still has a plaza, and from the few looks I've had at it- it seems to look similar to the bank being built along Allen Parkway, at the very least with the colors of building materials if not in design.
