  1. The location in Memorial City opened in 1989. Think it closed at some point in the mid 90s though... I have this commercial on my YT from the launch of that location.
  2. There's also this recap of some of the major projects which were ditched after the economy tanked. It was published in the Post in June 1988.
  3. Here's an article announcing the original version of Congress Plaza from 1983. Only some of the elements near the base look like they were retained in the final product.
  4. That's actually Gables Post Oak. Hadn't seen a rendering outside the one in that thread for it before though...
  5. A Michaels and Peter Piper Pizza may also be headed to the part of the development south of 59. Carl's Jr may also be going in between the Sonic and Taco Bell...
  6. It's funny looking back on a number of these projects from the past five years since I recall going into the sales offices, specifically of Turnberry, Park8 & Titan among others and checking out the pitch in each place. Even posted many of the initial photos of models and scanned the renderings acquired during those visits. Glad I kept the brochures though since they're unique souvenirs. At any rate, here's a fairly obscure project from the early 80s called "The Sutherland", which was to have been a 30 story condo tower located at 55 Briar Hollow Lane. What's interesting is that the only traces I could ever find of it was this ad from an October 1981 issue of the Houston Post. I couldn't track down any articles on the project or it's developer(s) throughout the 80s, based on the archives I was using. At around the same time, a joint partnership between Tenneco & the Developers of the St. James Condos had proposed building another condo building in the nearby Post Oak Park development. It was to have been a 15 story structure designed by SOM. I'll have to scan in the article at some point...
  7. Per BisNow, a new rendering and little new information... http://www.bisnow.com/houston_commercial_real_estate_news_story.php?p=17583
  8. For an old-school approach to this thread, there are always those many plans from the 80s to fall back on. Here's a model of a lesser known project called Resource Centre/Houston. It was to have been a series of towers: 46, 36, 26 & 16 stories tall, with the smallest being a hotel and the rest being office space. 2 million square feet on 16 acres. It would've been located east of what's now CityCentre, occupying the land that's now a large strip center. Apologies for the quality since it's a copy from microfilm.
  9. So they're actually going to finish the building this go round? I mean this is the building that St. Luke's pulled out of, as a partner, several years ago, isn't it? I haven't been down there in ages, so I have to ask if the crane is still there. I know it was around for a good long while after the construction stalled anyway.
  10. There's a flattering piece in the Chronicle on green design and changes in highrise development that's more or less exclusively about BG Group Place. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ent/arts/gray/7522028.html
  11. The one in Rosenberg was located at 2516 Avenue H, and anchored the Plaza Shopping Center. That center was built in the late 60s on the site of the former Rosenberg High School which had been demolished just prior to construction, since Lamar High had opened nearby and was larger and more modern. It featured some of the hallmarks of the other stores mentioned. A large peaked roof and expansive windows on the parking lot are the design points that come to mind immediately. I can't say that I have any experiences at the store as a Weingarten's since I wasn't around yet... but I do know that either in the late 70s or early 80s, it became a Budget Chopper location within the Brookshire Brothers' chain. I used to always go there with my grandma when she'd get groceries since that was one of her two favorite places to go, more due to location than anything else, since it was within a mile of her house. Years after it had become a Budget Chopper, she'd still refer to it as Weingartens. In her home, I think there's at least an old paper or plastic bag with the "red dot" logo on it. There may or may not be some spices on her rack with some labels from the store as well. Might be worth checking. I think the store closed in the late 90s or early 2000s, and has since become a 99 cents only location. Most of the building's original modern elements are hidden behind stucco now.
  12. The one in Rosenberg had a bit of a different evolution. It was built in 1975 at 3316 Avenue H and served as a Simmons Minimax into at least the early 80s. From there it became a Safeway store, and I do have some vague memories of it from that time. I was really young so the place seemed kind of huge, even though there's no way I'd mistake it as such today. It may have been late 1989 or early 1990 that it became an AppleTree, and there was an interior renovation that effectively lightened the place up. It closed around 1992, I think. The entire space sat vacant for a number of months before Walgreens modified it to suit their needs. It opened in 1993, and allowed the small store in nearby Lamar Plaza to relocate to the freestanding space. What's interesting is that the space was subdivided; two thirds are now the Walgreens location, while the remainder has NEVER been leased. It's cart storage at this point. It does retain some of it's look from the period. The only additions that occured when Walgreens moved in were a stucco facade above their part of the building, and the construction of a drive-thru pharmacy window & ramp that occurred in the mid 90's.
  13. I found this proposal while skimming LoopNet a while ago. Supposedly, someone wants to build a small medical office building with retail & a garage at that location with the aim of opening by early 2013. The brochure hints at a Phase Two that would be an "event center, bar/lounge" that would have retail. http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w208/houtosme/ParcBinzOne.jpg http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w208/houtosme/ParcBinzOneA.jpg Links ----- LoopNet Listing Promotional Brochure
  14. The framework for the crown is moving faster that I could've imagined. Compare Wednesday (11/18) To Monday (11/23)
  15. Here are some photos from yesterday afternoon View from the west View from the south Entrance Area View from the north Two more tower cranes at the site
  16. Look at the progress on the crown in the photos taken today. Compare them to the photos in a previous post, taken just one week ago.
  17. According to Nancy, it's still alive-ish. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/sarnoff/6708283.html
  18. Here are several photos I took while at the Chase Tower a couple of days ago. They're on the 31st floor.
  19. The building has a pretty huge footprint, to say the least. I can attest to that since I saw the site a couple of times during the excavation process. For the sake of comparison, this structure compared with taller, but more compact sites. Hess Tower: 7,500 Cubic Yards poured MainPlace: 12,000 Cubic Yards poured MD Anderson ASB: 21,500 Cubic Yards poured Also, here's a distant photo I took a couple of days ago from the Chase Tower.
  20. Some updates since this hasn't been updated in a while... -The On the Border has become a Gringo's -Cracker Barrel will open November 2nd, according to their website. -Kroger Signature is slated to Open in December
  21. Here are a number of photos I took this morning... First steel components to help bridge the facade at a junction on the southwest side. If the renderings are correct, it should run up the height of the building and feed into an edge of the crown surrounding the turbines.
  22. Some photos from this morning, as they were pumping concrete on the 29th floor.
  23. It's a small office building, and there was a piece in the Houston Business Journal last month on it. http://houston.bizjournals.com/houston/stories/2009/09/21/story3.html
