  1. Didn't realize it was going to be a longer-term series. Looks fairly interesting thus far. http://www.myfoxhouston.com/category/298788/houston-the-new-face-of-america
  2. Less than three months later, in December, a new proposal emerged for the site: A mixed use project with a hotel, condos, apartments and office space plus improvements to the existing plaza. http://www.mrt.com/business/article_f32bfaa4-7a9a-11e4-a68d-4fcb11017c4f.html Today, the Midland Development Board approved that plan for the site http://www.newswest9.com/story/28744512/midland-development-board-approves-hotel-santa-rita
  3. I think this coincided with the Cap Cities purchase of the station. I have a longer version of the promo on a tape somewhere, unfortunately it was recorded on an antenna so while you can hear the sound, you can't see much of anything. There were a few other notable bits that I think would be YouTube "worthy", including a Kathy Whitmire political ad shot atop either Enterprise Plaza or Centerpoint's tower, before the current top was added. Anyway, that was sort of a transitional phase on-air in terms of the presentation, but what was interesting was how the promo campaign morphed a bit a couple of years later or so. By that time it had become "Houston's Coming Back" - more of an ego boost in the depths of the bust. I still think that was an attempt to counter KPRC's partnership with Houston Proud. Houston's Coming Back, was also an orginization that I *think* was incorporated around the same time, however it ran into financial issues and fizzled out. It took much longer for Houston Proud to die off, though that was well after their involvement with Channel 2.
  4. Saw this on bisnow today. I know that there had been some discussion of this narrow building between the Magnolia and Keystone Lofts previously, but couldn't find a dedicated thread for it.
  5. My money is on that one too, and it was on for quite a while. I think KTMD had another program called "Cita Con Galveston" that aired in the late 80s / early 90s that wasn't necessarily as musically focused, but more with an eye on events and people.
  6. That's a tip that paid off. I forgot I'd already liked them on Facebook, but within a really short time they were able to determine it was an anchor named Don Shelby. I knew he was one of the long-timers in Minneapolis but never knew he worked down here. I'll get around to uploading the clip at some point in the future.
  7. I'm surprised the list of names doesn't go further back. They had the hourly news updates and business reports for eons before they tried to do a full blown newscast. Charlie Scott is one of those people I can think of. I know he was involved in a bunch of stuff during his time there, in addition to those news updates. He is enjoying retirement now down around Needville or somewhere out in the remainder of the "country" part of Fort Bend County. Nancy Paul passed away a few years back. She did the business reports for many years. I think she became a journalism teacher in east Texas in her years after leaving the station. Haven't found video of it so far, but maybe it exists on some tapes that I have. I know I have the first 7 PM show they aired in 1990 somewhere around here though. I'll have to find the article that ran in the Post on the launch of the operation, but I recall it said the costs to get the news department up and running was a little over a million dollars at that point in time. I'm curious as to how it compares to similar attempts today.
  8. Yes. It's now MundoFox, but it was the Azteca station a few years ago prior to the move to 51.
  9. Just sorting through some old tapes that I've acquired and so far have found one with the "oldest" material I presently have, April 1978. At the end of this tape was a segment of a weekend "Big 2 News" report, and this man was the anchor. No graphics popped up with his name and he wasn't referred to by name when Ted Shaw started his weather segment (of course, at the end of the tape). Anyone know who he is?
  10. Found this in the HBJ. 11 Stories on Woodway Dr. near Fondren, just east of Vargo's apartments Start date Q3 2015 w/ completion in 2017 http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/blog/2015/01/luxury-senior-living-community-moves-forward-on.html
  11. I doubt they would bring back a piece of music based on a 25 year old promotional campaign. As for dropping the "Local" - it's probably for the best.
  12. Found this on YouTube - a brief interview from the 70s or early 80s with Larry Kane about the program https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEZHEMLjNqo
  13. From a couple of different perspectives on Sunday... From Post Oak Tree for topping out on it's side From the West Loop
  14. Was lurking around the site yesterday afternoon and figured I'd try to size up the project as best I could...
  15. Back in town! Just saw a bunch of concrete trucks pumping at the site.
  16. I didn't think that Jojos was a local chain, but the only local one that sticks out to me was the one on the Seawall in Galveston. I think it's the Denny's there now. The only one I'd ever eaten at was in Irving on the Airport Freeway back in the late 90s, though I'm doubtful the strip center it was in is even there anymore. One chain I hadn't noticed on the list at this point was Toddle House / Steak 'n Egg Kitchen. Just thinking of both as one entity due to their common ownership at the end of the run, and a lot of their promotions at least for coupons and such mentioned both restaurants in the same space. I was also wondering if your list of chains will include those that are in travel plazas or convenience stores. When I get the chance I'll try to get together a list of the various locations for Richmond & Rosenberg. I can definitely help out on that part at least.
