Houston19514
Whither the tunnels underneath the building? Will they remain closed until the new complex opens? There aren't really any tunnels underneath the building. There are only 2 tunnels connecting to the basement of the building. One to 1000 Main and one to the Macy's parking garage. There will be no use for those tunnels until the new complex opens, so yes, I would imagine they will remain closed.
Tumbleweed_Tx
paul blart mall cop and the police are sweeping the area for people inside the blasting zone...I'm standing here in the garage on the 7th floor, they didn't ask me to leave. They do have caution tape up next to the cement walls closest to the victim building.
Tumbleweed_Tx
Cherry demolition has reserved floors 5 through 8 of the Pavilions Garage, so anybody coming to hang out will not be able to get on me, floors. 4th floor is fair game you're not going to see anything from three

FOX 26 will also have live coverage Live stream here: http://www.chron.com/homes/commercial/gallery/Houston-implosions-through-the-decades-53545.php Edited September 22, 2013 by HoustonMidtown
ClutchCity
Yea the Fox coverage alluded to retail and even some residential for the site. It's my understanding that Hilcorp got some tax incentives to include retail in their project to help anchor that retail district they want to make downtown. Doesn't seem like they could fit residential in it if it is only 23 stories though.

HoustonMidtown
looks like tv view was better Wow - that was fast !! Several small fires burning in debris -- is that normal for implosions ?
musicman
while the building was cleared out, you never know what could be in there, if perhaps unknown utiliies were still energized, etc.

Tumbleweed_Tx
We were in the old Books A Million, with the Pavilions people, but Cherry decided we were too close, and moved us up to the 8th floor garage. It was EPIC!!I will post a lot of pictures later, and link to my friend Eric's video
Triton
You were so lucky to get on that parking garage! They closed it off when I got there so I had to watch it from Main and Polk. I noticed some people were on top of the skyscrapers man... I can't even imagine the view. Edited September 22, 2013 by Triton
Tumbleweed_Tx
the view from inside the old Books A Million... they decided we were too close, so they moved us up (some of the people with us ended up on top of the SkyBar, where they were going to build the outdoor part... I'll find out how their view was on Monday) Edited September 22, 2013 by Tumbleweed_Tx
HoustonMidtown
Just rode by on my bicycle - fire trucks still pouring water on the rubble -- I couldn't tell if the fire is still burning though. It smells of smoke throughout downtown -- almost like a giant BBQ !!
