King Owl
I have to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the exterior of this thing. It looks like...a 25 story apartment building. The cheap painted exterior is not a welcomed addition to the area, in my opinion.

TheNiche
It's darn ugly, and will look drastically worse in coming years of rain staining, soot, etc.The color is baked into the concrete walls. All it takes is a crew of window washers equipped with power washers and the building can be made to look new again...even if new isn't especially striking to begin with.Sadly, the same cannot be said for Houston House. lockmat
Nice photos and interesting facts: ...the25-story property was designed with Japanese influences in mind byWDG Architecture. The facility offers residents interesting amenities like a smoking room with a poker table and flat screen, and complementary wine lockers. http://www.bisnow.com/houston_commercial_real_estate_news_story.php?p=8217
lockmat
I have to say, I think this place looks much better from the west side, but I'm not sure if a nice twilight view had anything to do with that.

I think the west side stands out more due to the elevation, at least when driving down Studemont. I took a few photos from the Buffalo Bayou trail, so it looks a bit shrunken from the west. I do really like the sleek south perspective. West side East side South side
lockmat
Anyone have what building this article is speaking of? This article seems kind of random for the website. (picture at link)An elegant, two-bedroom, Japanese-inspired high-rise home has amenities, including a spectacular view of the downtown Houston skyline. Rent is $5,789 per month. J Money
I've been noticing this for the past few weeks, and wondering what's up. The exterior on this one looks terrible with a mish-mash of different stucco colors that all look weathered. I'd imagine they're just making repairs to the facade, but I would really love to see this one reclad. The massing is very interesting on this building and it would be quite striking if it wasn't covered in such a lackluster material.

Would like to see it clad in all white metal panel with some nice off color accent panels and patterned in a way that plays off the patios. That would be way more interesting. mollusk
So, friendly architect - why is stucco so danged popular? It's difficult to apply correctly on modern structures, it's hard to maintain, shadow lines from imperfectly done repairs look terrible even from six floors down, and cracks can be a highway for water infiltration. No doubt it's for similar reasons to why we tend to get boxes done up in industrial chic.

Stucco is popular because its cheap! We also have a lot of trades with Stucco experience (of course I didn't say the experience was good). Brick is much more expensive, metal panel is more expensive, wood is more expensive, even hardy plank is more expensive. The downside to the low cost for stucco is the high cost of maintenance. Clients are never reminded of this fact, usually. When you go for something cheaper in material the trade off that isn't ever mentioned is that the maintenance cost for that material is typically higher, or if it isn't the maintenance cost that will get you then the lifetime/warranty of the product will. Clients, often without knowing this, will choose the cheaper material to save a buck on the front in which ends up being unwise the medium to long term. EDIT: Forgot to add that there is also a difference between actual Stucco and the cheap stuff that one normally sees. Fine stucco that is applied well can actually cost a little bit of money. You can imagine which option people go with instead.

hindesky
HOUSTON — Two workers were rescued Wednesday after being stranded on an unstable platform while they were cleaning windows on a highrise near downtown. The Houston Fire Department said they were able to rescue the workers at 3131 Memorial Court, which is near Buffalo Bayou at Memorial and Montrose. It's unclear what happened to the platform. Rescue teams repelled from the roof with ropes to secure the two workers. The workers were not injured during the incident.
