  1. I may be wrong and I am not all that familiar with the St. John's of the Campus. But, the new construction on the "North Campus" seems to be a different project than the area Southwest of the Westheimer & Buffalo Spdwy, where River Oaks Plant House and Blanco's used to be. I don't recall seeing any of the future plans for the this expansion. Are there any?
  2. I don't think that the Editors had airplanes in mind when they named this category "Going Up". Last time I flew Qantas, I felt as though they could benefit from a little competition.
  3. IronTiger, Think you've hit the nail on the head here. The problem is that this was a cheap, but big, hotel that won't convert easily into anything else. This "edifice" will be next to impossible to create something special (& commercially viable) out of. Small Lobby with low ceilings, trapped under layers of Parking. Curb appeal is not too sexy with large Parking Podium, overhanging sidewalks. Limited, small Sundeck with little room for nice pool or lounge space. Not sure what the meeting room situation is, but there cannot be a large ballroom without a lot of columns. Don't really know much about the rooms. But, oftentimes converting old properties to appealing, functional new ones is made difficult due to small bathrooms and limited room for closets. This is complicated by the fact that modern HVAC systems would be needed. Nobody wants to pay $200+/night for musty window/wall unit. This would lead to low ceilings in rooms and hallways. Some of these issues can be acceptable if the place is quaint, charming, historic or in a great location...But, this place ain't quaint...or those other things. And, it's just too big to be a boutique hotel. Now, I am sure that A LOT of money could be spent to make this place special. But, the same money could probably spent to make a new place just a special. So, I am a ship guy, and a comparison to the cruise industry is a fair one. You don't see many old cruise ships being converted into modern Liners. They just cannot be...not with the amenities and comforts that today's customers require. The old ships get towed away and are scraped. Even the best ones. This would be a pretty good challenge/project for an architecture school competition. Let's just hope that something is done soon. Hopefully there are some more creative people than me out there, that can figure out this trick box.
  4. Enron two was an evolutionary step from Enron one, which subtly picks up on surrounding elements. I expect and hope the Chevron three will continue the path. Renderings seem to indicate a similar path. The difference between Chevron's Campus and Allen Center & Houston Center, is that it is one corporate identity. The other two are multi tenant...which may be a good reason for multiple styles and identities.
  5. That technology has a long way to go before everyone starts using it.
  6. I recognized the Westin. The circular shaped tower in the left of the scene.
  7. The bar at Hilton Americas is gorgeous. And, true...ya never know who you could be sitting next to. ZaZa used to be good too.
  8. 103 acres? How Big is that, really? ExxonMobile is somewhere close to 400 acres, right? "Research and Development Facilities" are not likely to be located in High-rise buildings downtown, anyway." I don't think that this land purchase has anything to do with the downtown campus or tower. If "Shelved" is different than "Delayed" then its a separate issue, IMO.
  9. SubDude. Thanks for the description. I lived so close...never went. My Loss. Sounds interesting. Montrose1100 - VooDoo Queen, at 322 Milby (In the shadow of Maximus Coffee) is a very interesting place to hang/drink. Interesting Mix of characters, great cocktails!, good specials and friendly staff. Has an old New Orleans Port bar feel to it, but, heavy on the hipsters. Suggest ordering off their interesting Drink menu, rather than going with the cosmo. Warning...you can quickly become "over-served" here.
  10. The skyline backdrop in the Pool Rendering is hilarious. Williams Tower dropped into the Seattle Skyline. The Rooftop Pool & Bar area, however, isn't hilarious...It's HOT!
  11. Sounds like my kind of room. Where was this place on Allen?
  12. A regular, Full Service Marriott Hotel is just about the only Marriott Brand not represented dt. But, this place doesn't seem to fit the brand. Hope your source is right. But, sorry, I'm skeptical. Lack of large meeting room facilities/ballrooms are at the core of the business model.
  13. Lei low on n main leilowhtx.com Tiki bar and the owners strive to be authentic. Expensive drinks...but a great place. And...nothing but exotica music there. Can't wait to go back. In fact, what time is it??? Put Martin Denny on your Pandora, and get in the mood. See you there.
  14. Parking needs to go somewhere. Better sandwiched between other uses...than almost any other option.
  15. Looks like EADO name creep in the East Bayou District. Noticed a big sexy "Variance Request" sign for the large property at the NE corner of Jensen and Clinton. UrbanLiving has had signs up around the property for a year now. Lots of Land here...for lots of townhouses. But...this ain't EADO. It's really not even on the EDGE of EADO. But, more residents in the East Bayou will be a great thing.
  16. The "Book Garage" is in Downtown Kansas City and yes...I believe it is for the Downtown Library Branch.
  17. Heard that Pappasitos has opened in Hilton Americas. Has anyone been yet? How's the build-out and décor?
  18. Good observations. Perhaps the new design allows Metodist to reach the the 700 bed goal in two phases. This building can clearly be mirrored in a phase II.
  19. I like the hanging gardens idea. Makes me think of other beautification ideas for overpasses and raised highways. Since they have become one of our few landscape features...make em look good if not convert them into parklands.
