  1. Maybe we could get Gov Chris Christie down to execute the plan...over night. ;-)
  2. What I liked about the initial concept that it blended and flowed so well with the Research Institute, which is a handsome, well executed quality building. It took the RI's scale and blended it elegantly into the taller structure which would more match Methodist's Outpatient Building which faces Main, which has to be seen as The institution's identity in the skyline. This is what is so sexy. Didn't seem boxy to me. The new rendering doesn't seem to want to have anything to do with the rest of Methodist's collection of buildings. In fact it seems to compete with them. Doesn't it?
  3. H-Town. The provocative mural not withstanding, what is it that you find great? Or at least better than the initial design. Looking for a conversation not an argument.
  4. It appears as though Phase II could pretty easily mirror Phase I. But, wouldn't be surprised if another theme is hatched. Frankly, The Mary Gibbs Jones building does have to go.
  5. Yet another design direction from Methodist. Sorry that the initial rendering will not happen. Really liked how it continued the design theme and flowed from the Research Institute.
  6. You're right, Urbanizer. Looks a lot like the rendering of the new Galleria/ex SFA facade.
  7. In his aguement he posts his concern about how the streets will be able to handle the extra traffic, yet he opposes the brt, which is a measure to reduce the traffic. Poor guy seems a bit conflicted. Sure. Definitely NOT about obstructing his view.
  8. Texasota, I understand that it's a financial equation and that this sweet spot is much better than the previous (garden apartments was it?). But these four stories of luxury on a pedestal of parking is great for infill but don't generally make for very interestng streets or neighborhoods IMO. So do, and I know that there are different approaches. But, it seems like we are just seeing the same project proposed all over the city. From DT to Katy. Can not wait to see how Mid Main turns out. Or that midrise project next to the co Cathedral. They seem a step up the evolutionary ladder.
  9. Thank god. A fresh topic in "Traffic & Highways". Thank you, Tiger. I can appreciate how frontage roads make the highways more functional by providing alternate routes, so to speak, to the main roadways during construction and accidents. This makes them very functional. But, by cramming them with big boxes and dealerships, sure makes them ugly, and somewhat less functional from a traffic movement standpoint. This isn't strictly a Texas approach but it does seem to be Texas' only approach. Personally...I don't like them. But this is from a aesthetic perspective. This is the image of Houston, that most visitor are welcomed by, and sent away with...which is too bad.
  10. Looking forward to getting past this "sweet spot". It's beginning to become worrisome. And more than somewhat dull. I know, I know. In fill! Just ready for the next sweet spot.
  11. Democide. Really now. It's a conversation started about zoos. Not about your tea party. Marcus...welcome back to town. I'm always flooed my mixed emotions at zoos. Some Animals will always seem uncomfortable in captivity. Especially in a city where space is an issue and economics are at play. Having a zoo in the periphery of the city could be a feasible & interesting idea for African habitats. But, I wonder if these animals were removed from Hermann Park, would that zoo survive. Then, if the whole zoo were up near the Woodlands, or out near Katy, would it be accessible enough, and have enough visitors to serve the whole population and/or be financially viable. Maybe Cathexis could turn the KBR site into a velt. Lol.
  12. Marcus, This development is in the the Fourth Ward right along the top of Bagby, facing downtown across I-45.
  13. I feel a bit differently about Galveston than I do about Houston. In Houston...more is more. But in Galveston only Good is more. The Seawall does need some freshening and some quality architecture definitely would accomplish this. But, just anything will not do. And this building just isn't good enough. I want more Hotel rooms on the island and I realize that property size is an issue. But, I hope that developers (and the city) are sensitive to the island. It just isn't big enough to handle much crap.
  14. So, is this going to be similar to the Bagby re-do?
  15. Yuck. Mine too. I'll never forget being husseled aboard a Flight In FLL because the crew was delayed. "Come-on people. Put some pep in that step and get in you seat!", is what the FA's were shouting over the PA. If all I can afford is Spirit...I don't need to be going. I Don't even consider then.
  16. 99% of the materials used to build any conventionally constructed building, including mobile cranes used to construct the cranes are of standard width and height. No height than any standard truck using downtown streets everyday. A few permit loads, for HVAC, etc...may be taken to site. But these would be done overnight on the weekends.
  17. ^^ Not a terribly old proposal. The Houston Ballet Building is in the renderings.
