  1. I really like the building from its narrower side.

  2. I got to see the renderings today...and what I can describe is a 38-40 story building, and 3 other shorter towers ranging between 10-15 stories. From what you saw from previous renderings, the buildings look nothing like that. I would say the main tower is also within the 450-475ft range based on what I saw. There is a lot of glass and it is a very sleek, modern looking building. That's all I can say...there's also this little sky bridge that goes over Allen Pkwy to the park.

  6. The Midtown park is open to the public, set up as a conservancy (as is Discovery Green). Once it opens (second quarter is as specific as i know) there will be regular, varied and extensive programming for different audiences, much like you find at Discovery Green.

  8. Definitely not, this building sure is one of a kind. There's three tiers to this building and it's more of a rounder type of building. Hard to describe

  9. Its called a jib (if its a tower crane), not a boom And since they don't like to build jibs in the air one section at a time, they normally put the entire jib together on the ground and install it in one lift, as seen in the pictures above. A tower crane isn't strong enough to fly the entire jib to the top of another tower crane, much less the counterweights, it would be out of chart.

  10. the crane boom doesn't look like it's long enough to reach where the other cranes would go to be able to install them. That's just my guess from looking out the window at the crane, and where the other cranes will go.

  11. we haven't seen that view because the Comical building was in the way. Marvin The Martian used the illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator to remove it since it obstructed his view....

  15. Setbacks alone aren't as big a problem as setbacks PLUS parking minimums, but they're still a problem. Think of a walkable area in this city or any other that has 25 feet of space between the sidewalks and the buildings. There aren't many. There are some areas where the zoning code lets the builder trade setbacks for height, but even then, the podium tends to come right up to the building line. If you have minimum setbacks, AND don't allow parking in them, then you've effectively reduced the value of the land (since a good portion of it can't be built on). Reduced land value leads to reduced density, which means less walkability.

  16. Sweet! Thanks for the update! Is there a building in Houston that would compare most to the rendering you saw?

  19. Yes, the first tower crane is going up and according to a rigger and some Skanska workers, 2 more tower cranes will be going up in the next couple of weeks. The office portion is going up too!!! They are going to add 5 more floors to the existing parking garage and several more parking floors in the rest of the area with a ground level lobby and the office portion above that. I asked if the rumor was true that BOA was the new tenant but they said that was privileged info but the new tenant would be announced in a couple weeks. Keep an eye on the Houston Business Journal for news.

  20. This is an example of how Houston has invested in its people by re developing it's green spaces to which it gets back it's investment with developments like these popping up. We Houstonians know how great this area is and it's potential. Well outsiders now see what we see.

  24. Ah that makes sense. And it wouldn't make too much sense to have the boom be long enough to do so since the only use would be installing the new crane.

  25. That's Element's old facility, they moved out to 290 and the Beltway a couple of years ago and the land has been for sale since. They are an O&G / Aerospace material testing facility. Looks like the property is still for sale (the listing on loop net was just updated last week). My guess is they are demoing one or a few of the existing functionally obsolete buildings to make the property more marketable. http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/19484756/222-Cavalcade-Houston-TX/ http://x.lnimg.com/attachments/30B5EBD3-4E50-46AC-8724-A9E0D9D37DB6.pdf

  26. now, if we could only get that International Tower or Theater Tower going up at 50 plus stories, I could stop asking so many questions like "are we there yet, are we there yet ?" LOL.

  28. Does anyone know the history of this property or why Its being demoed? Apparently its called Element Materials Technology. http://swamplot.com/daily-demolition-report-broom-clean/2017-03-21/ https://www.google.com/maps/place/222+Cavalcade+St,+Houston,+TX+77009/@29.8024218,-95.3702543,794m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x8640b8ec6c850c91:0xb534a8d736d0a64d!8m2!3d29.802709!4d-95.369224 I was wondering if a new development is going in. 30. They never took out the tower base on the northeast portion next to the parking garage, I didn't know they already have a base for the 3rd crane but the workers told me it was already there.

  34. Keep in mind that the plan from the start was once construction on the tower was to commence, they would first finish the remaining portion of the garage. I find it hard to believe they would finish the garage, then once again deconstruct the crane. If they are putting the crane up, then this is moving forward and Bank of America or another large tenant inked a deal.

  36. 700 block of Milam and the 700 block of Travis between Capitol and Rusk will be closed for the crane construction this weekend from 7pm Friday to 5am Monday according to Baker Concrete. This can only mean they are going ahead with the office portion of the build. Great news. I wonder what company made the decision to move into the new building?

  39. more townhouses = more people more people = more demand for retail more demand for retail = greater chance of cool retail center popping up all this -> more demand for housing, forcing midrises I wonder how long it will be before a developer buys a block of 36 town houses and builds a condo building or apartment building. It'll be years, but how many years?

  40. Thanks. Now, don't get me wrong, it can be quite tacky if palms are the ONLY plants used for landscaping. However, I see nothing wrong with planting them along with other types of flora. In all honesty, I prefer if many landscaping features of the city not shy away from non-native plants. Not only are there obvious aesthetic benefits, it also is another way/mean through which the city can demonstrate its "worldliness." I also have preference for evergreen plants, although deciduous trees are good in certain contexts (i.e. those that are more "semi" in nature, those from subtropical/tropical dry climates, etc).

  41. Renderings are never set in stone. These do appear to have been done by Gensler though and may very well represent the current design. I would not be at all surprised if that design changes, but these appear at least to have been done for this site specifically rather than showing generic fancy glass towers for purely conceptual purposes.
