  3. This is just crap. Why are they giving a pretentious name like "One Market Square" to a freakin' parking garage? Is this really the best they can come up with for what could be one of the best locations downtown?

  4. They started building out a steel frame yesterday to expand the crown to encompass the entire floor. This morning it looks like they were boxing it in with the pre-cast. https://app.oxblue.com/open/landrys/1600wloop From the construction came, it also looks like they are also about to pour a new parking lot next to the Bently / Rolls dealer.

  5. or at least put some vines on it. the city should pass an ordinance that if you build a parking garage you either have to put a facade on it, or you have to put vines on it.

  6. The people that live in the neighborhood do. I walk to Kroger, Buffalo Bayou Park, River Oaks Theatre all the time and I see my neighbors out walking quite often.

  8. Ah, the Cineplex Odeon River Oaks Plaza. What a great theater. I remember when it opened to great fanfare, and when it closed in the wake of Loews' bankruptcy. Many fond memories, such as seeing Goodfellas when I was half out of it with what turned out to be a case of the flu. Cineplex Odeon theaters were top-notch facilities in their heyday, with the flagship Spectrum on Augusta being the place to go for unequaled image and sound quality. It was one of the first local venues to install multichannel digital sound, and was one of the last to have 70mm capability. Seeing Lawrence of Arabia in 70mm there was a life-changing experience.

  11. Houston seems to love 4 lane streets even when there could be a better configuration with less travel lanes Take Westheimer for example - lower Westheimer could work better as a 2 lane street with parking on both sides and left turn lanes at the lights, since that is what people treat it as now anyway

  12. Damn. So we dressing up in suits and having a haif pool party up there?

  14. Maybe I'm missing something, but does this looks anything like the crown currently going up?

  15. A tower similar in appearance to Aris Market Square on the north side of the block would be quite nice. Market Square would be a nice pocket of residential in Downtown. Maybe Treebeard's could finally open up on weekends.

  17. Looks like best case scenario is that in 5-10 years we get a Market Square Tower type of building next to our generation's Kim Son Garage. It's lame. Don't blame the developers because this will be a cash cow but why would our city allow this? Isn't Market Square a historic district? What's the point if it is? Eh, I take it back. Blame the developers too. This was one of the most prime locations downtown and they opted for this.

  18. Perhaps they could install Gondolas, they're pretty popular right now. Seriously though, why is W. Gray 4 lanes there? Why wouldn't they drop it to 1 lane each direction, and a suicide turn lane (or median with turn lanes)? At Waugh, they should get rid of the extra lane on both sides and slow it down to encourage pedestrians and discourage people using it as a through street. I watched Mars Attacks at the theater that used to be at BW8 and I10, I didn't have a bowl previous to seeing it, but still laughed quite hard. as far as why people drive across the street, they probably assume it's not one shopping experience, and if they leave their car on one side to go shopping on the other side they'll get towed.

  19. Wait, so all this will ever be is a parking garage? Or will "phase 2" be a tower?

  22. I visited CityCentre yesterday early afternoon and noticed chain-link fencing surrounding the entire block of old office buildings just north of the development. The tenant signage had been mostly removed and the buildings looked vacant. It is the block identified as Phase III in the plan below. Anyone have news on this going forward?

  23. Before we further discuss this topic I think its important to understand what discovery green is and the directive. The quote below is direct from their website with a key part in bold. "Discovery Green exemplifies a successful public-private partnership between the City of Houston, the Houston First Corporation and Discovery Green Conservancy, the nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that operates and maintains the park. The Conservancy produces hundreds of free events each year and receives no direct city funding." Being a resident of midtown and a worker in downtown I frequent this area quite a bit. I would love for the park to be in pristine condition year round but like everything there is a cost. Many of the times I go to the park it is because there is a special event. I think complaining about the number of events is a non starter as one of the conservancy's main goals is events. The national mall example I think is the best way I have heard to address the issue. For any of us that may know someone associated with the Discovery Green Conservancy I think we should bring this example to their attention.

  25. Osso & Kristalla is supposed to open tomorrow..... but they were holding a private event tonight and the kitchen caught on fire. The second fire at 500 within a few short months when Centerpoint was installing a new generator and knocked the power out for an entire weekend. The patio with tvs is cool though.

  28. We're all talking about this quote from the first page: So step one in increasing pedestrian activity of customers is to stop tenants from reserving spots that threaten to tow potential pedestrians

  29. I bet the worst that happens is that the owners of the tower ask them to remove it, or be sued. On the one hand, the residents are paying lots of money, so I'd suspect they expect safety. On the other hand, they'll probably be using this as a training video and security is going to get a little stiffer. even though these people aren't exactly who the staff are trying to keep away.

  30. After looking through the renderings at Ziegler Cooper's site again, I think my initial reaction of "Catalyst 2.0" (to borrower Urbannizer's phrase) was a bit unfair. I quite like the three finned crown of the tower, which in profile looks somewhat different from the Catalyst. There aren't any full-blown nighttime renderings of the tower, and I think this could add a nice light-up feature to the Midtown skyline.

  32. They should at least paint a facade of old buildings on the back of the parking garage that faces the park, sort of like the garage at Pease and Milam

  33. Well that is absolute idiocy but I would think Weingarten could resolve that, depending on lease terms with their tenets.

  34. This block is outside of the historic district, likely because it was vacant when the district was created.

  35. Excuse my ignorance, but is Irma's moving out of the Great Southwest Building into Catalyst or are they just opening another location across the street called Irma's on Texas Avenue?

  38. I think until the tower is under construction to replace the current parking garage podium, the title should stay as it is. The site hasn't given us a replacement for the Houston club yet, just an ugly garage with a pretty picture on one side

  39. If you stare at anything long enough it can look like a 40 story vagina when lit. As LED costs get lower we'll see more stuff on new buildings, I think. long lasting, cheap to install, and cheap to operate makes these adds easy. Hopefully.
