Houston Potential Projects That Were Never Built

Found their official threat statement:

FAIRFIELD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Reports that Connecticut officials intend to raise taxes by another $750 million dollars are truly discouraging. Retroactively raising taxes again on Connecticut’s residents, businesses and services makes businesses, including our own, and citizens seriously consider whether it makes any sense to continue to be located in this state. The Connecticut economy continues to struggle as other states offer more opportunities and a better environment for business growth. It is essential that Governor Malloy and legislative leaders find a more prudent and responsible path forward for Connecticut and its citizens in their current budget negotiations.

I'm no longer able to view the renderings, is anyone else having this problem?  If memory serves it looked like the renderings were on the site of the police headquarters.  I thought about how great it would be if the plan was for the city to sign a long-term lease in 800 Bell, and this land was currently under-contract with a foreign developer.  We have seen a lot of asian capital pouring into the market (even during the oil slump), and this seems to have a lot more chinese/foreign design elements.  Would also be great if this was in conjunction with whatever Frank Liu has cooking up for the Post Office redevelopment - However that would be a little "too" ideal.  This is all thinking outloud and personally I don't think any developer would propose something as this during the current commodity climate.  Although, the only type of developer and large equity partners that would be bold enough to propose something of this magnitude would be from foreign investors trying to establish their Houston portfolio.  This is all my opinion, and 'Houston Potential' style thinking.

Urb, link isn't working. The building is great but the lack of trees takes away from the design.

Young designers envision the future

Abandoned silos along Buffalo Bayou would be reborn as cylindrical spaces for graffiti exhibitions, a scuba diving tank or perhaps a climbing wall with downtown views for those who made it to the top.

A downtown tower with hotel rooms and apartments would set an example for urban conservation with a high-tech water collection system.

A vertical community of residential "pods" would fill a vacant structure between downtown and Midtown to provide affordable housing in the urban core.

Such are the visions of young designers from the Gensler architecture firm, groups of whom selected existing sites and neglected structures to show how they could be revitalized or repurposed through technology and ingenuity.

So funny. i was looking at all the new downtown construction threads wondering why green roofs aren't a thing here yet and then stumble across these beauties. Damn.

It's a shame all these new midrise apartment complexes aren't doing roof decks, green roofs, and floating urban pocket parks. It helps cut down so much of the heat island effect and it's  huge perk. I'd rather a roof space with downtown views than another lame pocket gym or billiards room.

Description:
The Maker District is a collection of existing light industrial / distribution buildings intended for redevelopment as artist spaces within the emerging Washington Avenue Arts District. The conceptual master plan seeks to maintain the authentic qualities of this industrial landscape and create a clear brand identity through select interventions. The plan establishes a framework for a district that offers makers and artists the tools and inspiration to reach their potential while creating a citywide arts-based destination. The plan speaks to the markers, the creative class, to those who make the content that fuels our consumer economy. The plan envisions a mix of uses, from creative space for makers to housing, retail, entertainment, arts education, wellness and an urban farm with market. Social spaces encourage interaction, the exchange of ideas; the plan shapes key spaces, like Artist Alley, for this purpose. Through minimal expenditure the plan creates a connected campus with a clear brand identity, a campus that can be realized in a phased manner over time. The result is a cohesive, smart, functional and affordable arts-based district.

Clients: The Deal Companies, Western General, Lovett Commercial
