...Houston Chronicle's paywall-free site Chron reported on The Thompson / Thompson Houston's forthcoming coffee shop.

Named Maven / Maven Coffee Co., the coffee shop and cafe will be located in the lobby of the hotel. It's one of several food and beverage options opening in the hotel. The coffee shop is from Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. and Juan Carlos Martinez de Aldecoa (Eximus Coffee).

Located in The Allen mixed-use development, Maven aims to open in November (at least that's what's indicated on Maven's website and social media).

Building permits lists the address for Maven as 1711 Allen Parkway Floor 1. However, the address on Thompson Houston's website lists 1701 Allen Parkway.

Design Group designed Maven / Maven Coffee Co.'s space at The Thompson Hotel / The Thompson Houston. Their website details the color palette and other design features.

Maven is located in the lobby of The Thompson Hotel / The Thompson Houston. The coffee shop and cafe's address is either 1711 Allen Parkway Floor 1, 1701 Allen Parkway, or 1717 Allen Parkway.

...We were asked to refresh the style of the project focusing on a warm, homey and close concept, since it would be located inside a hotel.

Considering these parameters, we integrated a peaceful color palette, mainly influenced by terracotta and beige tones. These shades create an attractive contrast with the blue used as an accent in the bar and ceiling area.

One of the main challenges we faced was to strategically plan this coffee bar to also function as the hotel lobby. Therefore, we designed the proposal taking into account the main accesses, dynamic circulation for guests and harmony with structural elements, such as the escalators.

Among the most outstanding elements of the café is the incorporation of an all-glass bar. This bar takes advantage of the natural lighting from the large windows to generate a greater sense of spaciousness in the space. In addition, we used Vibia’s Palma pendant light fixture, which not only offers maximum light efficiency, but also complements the natural vibe through the use of plants.

I like how they used these plates to protect the trees roots and so the roots won't crack the concrete sidewalk.

They did that with the new sidewalks on Hawthorne as well. It can be a little awkward walking on, but it's a good solution. I'm curious how it compares in longevity to the rubber they use in parts of Boston (and presumably other places).

Glad tree roots are protected, but a bit leery on how slippery they are, especially after a rain. Suppose it is better than the sidewalk being lifted a foot up by tree roots. Moving in the right direction.

We walked over a few of these on Saturday night in the Heights immediately after it rained, can confirm that they get slippery. Not terrible for most people but could certainly be a problem for some.

Is this the view from The Allen?  I’m all turned around with those refineries in the background.

My wife and I lived in a high-rise for a few years which had a clear view of the refineries. They actually looked kind of pretty with their flares sparkling clear across the horizon at night. But also, whenever I saw them, this is what went through my mind:

A towering new high rise along Allen Parkway is being called an eyesore by some Houstonians thanks to a series of ultra-bright lights covering the exterior of the building.

A towering new high rise along Allen Parkway is being called an eyesore by some Houstonians thanks to a series of ultra-bright lights covering the exterior of the building.

Construction on The Allen, at 759 Gillette St. just west of Downtown, began in 2019. At the time, the tower was lauded for its proximity to Buffalo Bayou and its mixed-use offerings, which include retail stores, restaurants, a spa, and a 172-room luxury hotel from Thompson Hotels, as well as 99 luxury condos starting at $1.8 million. Among those condos are 22 multi-story penthouses, priced between $3 million and $9 million, with floor-to-ceiling windows and "state of the art" amenities including smart lighting, music controls, temperature controls and electronic vehicle charging stations in the parking garage. A May Instagram post from Thompson Hotels referred to the tower as an "architectural marvel poised to become the fashion-forward landmark of the city."

That was until September when the lights came on. The decorative lights, which appear as horizontal bars wrapping around the building, appear brighter than nearly anything else in the Houston skyline. And that's led to plenty of discussion on social media.

In a lengthy thread on the Houston Architecture Information Forum, posters at first were excited about the lighting, writing that it added a modern and "posh" look to Downtown. But pretty soon the questions came.

"I could see the neighbors complaining about how bright it is," one user wrote, along with photos taken from a distance showing just how bright the lights look from afar.

There was a thread on r/houston, and thought I was on nextdoor for a second. It's just as bright as 1 Shell in the distance. Our Downtown lighting is a joke, the absolute minimum. A lighting scheme comes along with something other than just the roof outline and it's an "eyesore".

If it's a bright enough problem for the Allen House or the Apartments to the south, sure they could dim them a bit. Otherwise, think it looks great. Downtown properties should step up their game if they don't wish to be outshined.

Complaining about lack of lights as another ERCOT warning comes out for next week. 🙄
