gene
btw, went to see Captain America last night at the awesome iPic and upon driving up to the development i noticed that Taverna is now uncovered and you can see that they are all ready to open in the next week or 2 it looks like! and just saw this article about Steak 48 and how its getting ready to open next month with the chef announced! http://houston.eater.com/2016/5/20/11719234/river-oaks-steak-48-announces-executive-chef-prepares-to-open Edited May 20, 2016 by gene
imagoman
Just visited Taverna. The manager said they're shooting for May 30 (same date announced by Hopdoddy). I looked inside La Colonial. To me they'll be lucky to open on or before July 1st, although I have limited experience in restaurants buildout and staff training, but they could make it happen if they wanted. I'm guessing Steak 48 will also be sometime in July. I'm looking forward to the Gelato place, if only because I'm guessing that it'll have great coffee, too. This morning, walking through, I also noticed a new store announced with just a small signe on a storefront (just south of Les Copains, across from Stella McCartney). "Bonpoint" :-)
monarch
^^^ to my direct knowledge, BONPOINT (high-end french children's apparel/shoes boutique) has not been officially announced throughout the houston region. crockpotandgravel's acknowledgment is the very first that i have heard of their forthcoming arrival. however, this shall be MAGNIFICENT news for all of the high-end and fashionably attired children of the district / city. props.... monarch
^^^ @swtsig do you care to explain the "most pretentious post" caption of your reply? BONPOINT PARIS, just so happens to be a very high-end childrens / teens boutique known worldwide. i am elated that they are now contemplating a houston ROD arrival. i follow an exorbitant amount of twitter related houston area social entities... and i had not heard of this boutique's impending arrival, and i was only trying to extend a "props" to @CrockpotandGravel per his heads up. why the pompous response? imagoman
Monarch, in psychological terms it's just a "projection," and has zippo to do with you. I was the one who saw the name "Bonpoint" printed on that wooden, temp front on the space, so perhaps it's only grafitti. I always appreciate your posts, and have never associated any negativity with them. Keep up the fellowship, my man, and remember that a mark of consciousness among the masters is "ALL criticism is self-criticism, just as ALL love is self-love." I am always particularly grateful to anyone with news on a company that is unannounced for ROD, who'll begin to take up the considerable empty space left on the as yet 'unmarked' spaces. I saw the asian-mexican company as well as the gelato company with their names printed on a space near the IPic, in addition to the above-referenced Bonpoint, but that is all I see currently. I see no construction activity on any of these, nor on 'The Porch' or any of the space next to Saint Bernard and underneath Equinox.

monarch
^^^ apologies are in order @imagoman for my mix-up in not properly attributing your "heads-up post regarding BONPOINT PARIS. also, i appreciate your clarification as well as "lesson learned" bit of psychology. trust me my good pal, if it was hereby labeled at ROD... then this was no mere graffiti... they are on the way. one thing that i have now learned about DEAN OLIVER (partner / owner of ROD) is that he loves to provide a bit of shock and awe to his development patrons. imagoman
No prob, amigo. Not looking for credit, nor need the affirmation. You contribute so much to this community/thread. I was looking at the most recent ROD brochure (found in all the elevators) yesterday. Confirms that both The Porch and Thirteen Pies have cancelled their tenant reservations. I'd heard that the latter pulled out of OM's Atlanta project due to to financial problems, and I'm guessing that The Porch likewise made a financial decision, too. Pies had been previously shown as next to Hopdoddy's, closer to iPic. The Porch was going to locate between Saint Bernard and La Taverna, on the pricey (I'm guessing) Westheimer entrance, I saw guys in chef's unis coming out of Steak 48 yesterday. Guessing all remaining restaurants except La Colonial will be opening within the next few weeks, and La C in July sometime. Just guessing...no expert here. But can't wait. I continue to be disappointed by La Toulouse. 4 lunches and 4 dinners, but no mas. Beautiful restaurant but it is very loud and the food quality is way below expectations. I'm done until they begin in a few months to offer breakfasts and a brunch. Perhaps they'll have the kitchen 'fixed.' The Italian owner hired a Frenchman for it, but my tastebuds are especially knowledgable on French, and every dish I've tried is poor. Brasserie and Max & Julie's prices, but quality is better at La Mad. Just my humble non-foodie opinion.

imagoman
Honestly, I'm a fan of Whataburgers. It baffled me observing 2-3 hours waits when 5 minutes gets you Texas' fave burger all over the city. So when the lines go away, I'll be very curious to take my discriminating, and fussy, tastebuds to try Hopdoddy's and see how it compares to my $5 double meat Whataburger served in 5 minutes. LOL
monarch
^^^ @imagoman uuhhmmm dude, you know that i dearly love you, but SURELY you are wise enough to comprehend that WHATABURGER (with there often times overly greasy and bitter tasting.. and did i mention overly greasy food) is simply no match for the upscale / high-end HOPDODDY from austin, tx. no matter what kind of spin machine that you may come up with... it shall not work... no sir, it won't.... thatguysly
I've eaten at Hopdaddy in Austin. It's a good burger but it tastes like most other gourmet burgers. It was a nice spot to catch some college football though. I'll check this location out for lunch one day.
imagoman
Okay, HAIFers. I had the Classic Burger, with fries, today. Waited 'only' 45 minutes for lunch, and my perception was except possibly for people who arrived earlier than 11:30 am others waited at least double that time. I agree with thatguysly. Hopdoddy seems like most other gourmet burgers. Certainly very good, and not bad, even for $12 including tip, and a long wait, Sorry, Monarch, though I hate to disappoint such a gentleman and a scholar, but I'll usually be sticking with Whataburger, which personally I like a lot. Especially $5 and 5 minutes. And hopefully, my addiction to In and Out (started as an undergrad at UCLA) when they come here someday will also return out of remission to compete with the King of Texas Hamburgers. :-) I'm sure I'll have a Hop once in a while if it's convenient, and assuming the lines someday return to 'normal.' How about a drive through on Bettis??? JUST kidding!

There are far too many alternative places that serve outstanding burgers in Houston to ever justify a 45 minute to 1.5 hour wait for one. Perhaps they think they're the Franklin Barbecue of burgers. Must be an Austin thing, they all seem to view waiting as a competition and labor under the impression that there's a correlation between the length of the wait and the quality of the resulting experience.

imagoman
"Must be an Austin thing." This makes total sense to me. I wonder if the blockbuster start, and perhaps the beginning of a successful store, is due in large part to that. As a native Houstonian who has travelled the state extensively, it seems like Austin has become overly romanticized by a million or so folks, mostly UT grads, over the past 25 years or so. I think many Texans with our state pride, with the possible exception of people in and around Bryan-College Station, have always felt a warm spot in our hearts for Austin and the Capitol. But Austin's population growth and national stature has obviously boomed since the nascent days of Austin City Limits and a Chamber of Commerce that has played it smart and well since the 1970's. My love of Austin doesn't overcome by distaste for its horrible traffic and long lines for anything tasty, though as a Texan, I'll always have some warm fuzzies about the town. Hopdoddy's in ROD will continue its success, I'm guessing, and one factor will be 'Austin nostalgia.' Fuddruckers is run by the most shrewd family in the restaurant game, Houston's own Pappas family, and also will continue to succeed, no matter the competition, imho. I can't wait to try the next 3 restaurants to open in ROD this summer either!!!

gene
So River Oaks District ( http://www.riveroaksdistrict.com/ ) is supposedly THE place for the best shopping in Houston for those looking for high end retailers... But I have been going for the awesome iPic theater and now...finally, the restaurants: The Tuck Room at iPic opened November 6, 2015 and has some pretty good food and atmosphere to boot (and oh yeah, lots of signature cocktails)! and i love the biscuits and butter on the in movie theater menu...addicted to those things! The ironic thing is that the folks who have romanticized Austin in the relatively recent past generally have a near-utopian vision of what it must have been like in the 70s and 80s, but the folks who were actually around to experience the Austin of that era tend to be none too pleased with what it has become now.
