  1. It's open! Now if we could just kick Krispy Kreme in the pants...
  2. If the majority is too lazy to vote then the politicians do what they and their donors want. And the majority is too lazy to vote and thus here we are. it cuts both ways.
  3. No one's been disenfranchised. If anything, implementing policy only actively approved by 5.4% of eligible voters seems like tyranny of the minority. We're all collectively enablers for corrupt politicians as long as there isn't a backlash. Don't be so naive to believe what your 4th grade social studies book said about how democracy works.
  4. Because when only 5.4% of eligible voters actually vote in favor, it's pretty easy for officials to ignore. That's a disconnect between how things work in theory (an election decides it once and for all) and the reality that without real support ideas/bills/referendums can be killed pretty easily. So you can't really say that a vote is unequivocal evidence that the polity wants a particular policy implemented.
  5. Are you talking about this referendum? http://www.nytimes.com/1988/01/18/us/rail-system-plan-backed-by-houston-voters.html I don't see any reference to a monorail in the article. And at any rate, a whopping 9% of voters polled in that election and 60% voted in favor for a whole package. That makes 5.4% of all voters bothering to vote in favor. No wonder it was easy to not implement that portion of the package. That's a case where even though technically voters approved, there wasn't really any political will to get it done.
  6. It makes sense with regards to events happening inside the loop on the weekend. You would want fast access to get to the event (concerts, games, festivals, museums, etc.) but can take your time returning home afterwards.
  7. It looks like Crescent City might be making a comeback. We saw what looks like a new one going into a shopping center on Westheimer east of the Hillcroft/Voss intersection.
  8. The Katy tollway already costs $7 one way during peak hours and the top end of contract rates were already pushing $400 in 2014. Try again.
  9. I would reccommend you stop smoking crack and reread that post.
  10. ROFLMAO... re: just about every thread you've ever posted to.
  11. Isn't it wonderful that we can pretend to be whatever we want on the internet?
  12. That's pretty cool, but this is a more appropriate transit visualization tool for Houston. http://traffic.houstontranstar.org/layers/
  13. No doubt. Maybe west Houston's central park, though it has a ways to go for that. Hermann park is Houston's central park.
  14. I don't think it's a mayfly. It looks like an ensign wasp. http://bugguide.net/images/cache/5ZL/L6Z/5ZLL6ZRLAZXHZRNHRRPHHRPHYHEH1ZMLRREHJH6HRRXLVZQLDHZLVHEHNZZL5ZQLBHIH4ZSLEZ5H8Z0L6ZRLVHRL8ZSL.jpg
  15. I know...that one was very near me. Drove by the new one last night and it looks like they've still got a ways to go.
  16. Que Huong in their new digs at Hong Kong City Mall is a possibility, though Jasmine is also a good choice. The folks who own Que Huong also used to own a ballroom of some sort, I think off of Westheimer.
  17. I'm looking forward to the upcoming debate and campaign trail flubs. Last time around was quite entertaining.
  18. Just to throw some gasoline on the fire... From the chron...FBI behind mysterious surveillance aircraft over US cities http://www.chron.com/news/texas/article/FBI-behind-mysterious-surveillance-aircraft-over-6300771.php
  19. Slight side-note, Arby's locations have been closing recently. Not sure what's up with that.
  20. Yeah...class 1 railroads are always checking, maintaining, and replacing ties and ballast along their lines. It's not practical to concrete regular rail lines due to the distances involved, but for Metro it's far better to do it that way. The only thing I'd worry about is the soil shift we get here. I'd guess they've factored that into the engineering somewhere, though.
  21. If they don't remember 3.5 disks then these would really throw them for a loop...
  22. After Allison, I got one of those and keep it in our laundry room upstairs in case we need to go boating from the second story one day.
  23. It is, to a degree, but the other side of the coin is increased amenities bring increased costs. if your parents can afford the higher costs then no problem. But if you're doing it on your own, that likely means more loans. Back in the day, if you wanted the amenities you'd move out of the dorms at the first chance and rent a luxury apartment nearby. Doing it that way kept the costs down for average students and let those with more disposable money or who wanted the lux life enough to take out more loans do their own thing.
