  1. Sorry to go off on a tangent, but did they ever do anything with the Dallas Galleria? I visited it several times in the mid-late 80's and it was the place to be. Last time I was there, in 2000 or 2001 it seemed dead by comparison. Reminded me of how Town & Country was here in Houston in it's later years.
  2. One of the earlier posters stated that the police can't or won't do anything about it. In that case you have to either look at alternate solutions or just put up with it (or move). I'm in favor of alternate solutions. If you don't fancy watering the concrete you could plant some nice thorny hedges instead.
  3. It's an extreme suggestion to meet an extreme situation. Not suggesting that it should be done during normal times, but when some of the pedestrians are behaving like this you've got to look at your options.
  4. Was a reason given when the line was constructed for not putting in turnstiles?
  5. From the Chron... Metro to add fare enforcement to rail line http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Metro-to-add-fare-enforcement-to-rail-line-4473831.php#ixzz2RzVTTnhk
  6. Ate at the Zoe's yesterday. It's got a nice seating area next to one of the lakes. Noticed Grimaldi's is going in next to Zoe's. They've got a sign up and are finishing the buildout inside. I think Bonefish is already open, but the one I'm most curious about is World of Beer. Can't wait to check that out.
  7. I don't know if they would go this far, but I know from experience with fighting my HCAD appraisal that HCAD at least has access to some very detailed satellite photos. I was surprised at the detail of the back of my house and of my backyard that they could pull up while discussing my appraisal. Theoretically, the city could get access to similar images, though I'm not sure they would.
  8. Don't know about the noise, but you could install some sprinklers around the perimeter of your yard and do your watering on Friday and Saturday nights, making sure to water the concrete around you as well.
  9. Aren't the DT tax breaks there because developers aren't stumbling over themselves to build residential downtown? I would guess the obsession with putting it in on Bissonnet is that there's higher demand in the area and they can make more money. Nothing strange about it.
  10. The USC administration has concluded that Texas is the future and they are moving to Houston.
  11. I've never heard Metro characterized that way.
  12. They should have edited out the haze in the picture before publishing it.
  13. Probably not in our lifetimes. Houston has room to grow, literally, in all directions so that will work to keep housing costs down in the overall metro. The core may slowly rise in cost, but not to the extent that more geographic-bound cities like NYC or San Francisco will. I think the point of the article is that the paradigm for tier 1 cities is changing and Houston is the future.
  14. Yeah, and any permits you need are going to take a while. FEMA trailers will be available, though.
  15. Back in '99 or '00, during the Brown administration, I remember a lady being so frustrated by the inaction on a water main leak that had caused a huge pothole in front of her house that she named it "Lake Lee Brown" and got it on the news. The city took notice and fixed it. Maybe we need some "Lake Parkers" or "Parker Canyons" on the news.
  16. The Astrodome is still there, rotting in the sun. No one can decide if we should tear it down or repurpose it.
  17. Was Houston hit badly by the oil crash?!? It was national news back in the eighties when Houston went from boom to bust overnight. The real estate market came to a complete standstill and was still recovering in the late 90's. I'm sure you can find plenty of stories out there about what it was like.
  18. More baseless, idle speculation, but if the above is true then there's probably going to be some lively debate within the Chevron rank and file about Houston vs the Bay Area. I work for a company based not far from San Ramon and most people there of all cohorts, but particularly the younger ones have a negative attitude towards Texas in general and don't really believe me when I tell them how diverse Houston is.
  19. Thanks for the tip. That method seems to get you past the paywall for all the other "digital subscriber only" content as well. Epic fail for Chron web programmers.
  20. The old building was certainly ugly on the outside but the bank lobby inside was old-school marble and wood, designed to impress. I miss that style of bank lobby. Newer banks are bland by comparison.
  21. If you deliberately purchased a house on a narrow street bordered by ditches that are clearly too steep to allow cars to pull fully over when parking on a public thoroughfare and then try to access your driveway in a vehicle that is clearly too large for the circumstances then whose fault is that? That's not the price you pay for "living in the city", it's the price you pay for making some lousy decisions.
  22. If the Ruggles Green in the Heights is anything like the one at City Centre, I feel for you. Talk about adding to a "Lack of Restaurant Diversity In the Heights".
  23. That's just as sad as all the innerloopers who think it's a desert outside 610.
  24. Yeah...that's kind of the bottom line. The street is public and anyone can park there unless the city puts in signs or an ordinance (like street parking permits for residents). That's why you might have to physically occupy the space if you want to mitigate the problem.
