  1. Why not just park there yourself on the busy days? I had a problem with folks parking in front of my house and blocking the mailbox. When I did't get any mail for a few days I called the Post Office and was told that the mailman doesn't have to deliver the mail if your mailbox is blocked. After that, I started leaving my garbage can at the curb for a while and people got the hint.
  2. Just looked at the pics. They're packed like sardines in the Galleria.
  3. It's not just the Galleria. Memorial City was packed this afternoon, too. Traffic on Westheimer in Westchase was rush-hour bad.
  4. That could be an option. Some carriers, like tmobile, allow you to connect via a wifi connection. Not as seamless as having a direct cell signal, though. I don't know about downtown, but Verizon has a pretty good network out in the country.
  5. Doubtful you'll ever get good service in the tunnels due to interference. I'd be looking primarily at what kind of service you get near your office. When I used to work downtown I'd have to go to a nearby window to make a cell call. That was 10 years ago so hopefully the above-ground situtation is better now, but it would take a major infrastructure project to light up the tunnels with a decent signal. They could do a few hot spots if they wanted, but I'm not sure that's on any of the carriers to-do lists.
  6. Does that mean the "certain segment" is in abundant supply in the Heights area?
  7. So when is this thing scheduled to open? I'll make an extra effort to shop there when I'm in the area.
  8. Maybe try identifying the piece of land the car was sitting on and then see if you can get ownership records for that time period?
  9. From the Chron... http://www.chron.com...an/7583567.html The new building will house post-1900 art. Not sure if this is going up on the parking lot about a block north of Bissonnet on Montrose. The article suggest just across Bissonnet from the main museum buildings.
  10. I suspect the walmart trucks will have to cross many bridges going from the distribution center to this walmart. After they lose this fight (if they haven't already), is RUDH going to check out every bridge that walmart trucks cross? After all, what's so special about this particular one? Wait a minute! Doesn't walmart ship in goods from all over the globe? Shouldn't every bridge, ship, and truck be checked out just so RUDH can stop this particular walmart from being built?
  11. Yeah...thorn in their side. This is coming from RUDH, i.e. the stopheightswalmart.org folks. If they can't stop it then they'll do their best to slow it down.
  12. Apparently as another way to put a thorn in Walmart's side.
  13. Actually, retailers do give a damn. They closely watch a store opening and run grand-opening specials tied to that store. Although cards like these are good at any store, they are keeping track of who uses them at the intended store (and others) to see how the store draws from the surrounding areas. They're paying you to provide marketing info.
  14. Hey...there's still room in the new Heights Walmart shopping center, isn't there?
  15. I thought I heard they were planning to move this station, but can't find any confirmation. Is that just an urban legend?
  16. I haven't seen a BSOD in quite a while, but I'm sure the solution will be "we'd be happy to sell you upgraded software".
  17. Wanna bet they'll just give you the number for tech support in India?
  18. That's basically what happened at the fire next door. Most of the firemen milled around while a couple used the fire extinguishers. Since they were all suited up and ready to go, I suppose if another call came in they could respond as fast or faster than if they were at the station.
  19. I had a fireman tell me one time that if there is nothing else going on dispatchers will send all the locally available units out regardless of the reported size of the fire. A few years ago we had three trucks show up to a small trailer filled with remodeling debris next door. They put it out with fire extinguishers. I guess the thought is you never know how bad it can be or could get so better to send too much than too little.
  20. Since most, if not all, MS products are available at any given Best Buy, Fry's, etc. I'm not sure this will add much value. I know Apple's are too, but they have a much smaller and focused product line so it's easy to set up an Apple section at the big box retailers. I'm thinking it's more a marketing ploy to go head-to-head with Apple and Sony at the mall.
  21. Where is this in relation to the old downtown chinatown? From the pictures it looks like it is just behind it a block or two.
  22. I've seen the one in at the Mandalay Bay resort in Las Vegas and it is pretty cool but what would really be cool would be a wine waterfall.
  23. Are these things you already see at other local merchants in the neighborhood (Kroger, Target, etc)? I had the impression the local neighborhoods were more upscale than that.
  24. Walmart, like other retailers, is adapting it's strategy for new (read urban) markets that it hasn't traditionally competed in. http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/retail/2010-09-20-walmart-urban_N.htm I don't know how relevant the model in the link above is to the Heights Walmart, but I would guess that it will not be exactly the same as the existing supercenters outside the loop. IronTiger...just out of curiosity...how did you pick the Caldwell store for your comparison? I just purchased some property up that way and have been in that particular store several times in the last year.
