You might try an apartment finder service. They make their money from referral payments from the apartment complexes so it'd be free for you.

Fixing Southwest Freeway Congestion
august948 replied to DNAguy's topic in Traffic and Transportation
Whatever they do they need to fix the segment from 45 to the spur. Maybe double-deck it if they can't get the land on either side.- 17 replies

When is Krispy Kreme opening?
august948 replied to IronTiger's topic in Houston Area Dining, Shopping and Entertainment
Word is the Westheimer and Hwy 6 locations will open mid-October. Can't wait! http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2015/09/17/exclusive-krispy-kreme-to-open-two-houston.html -
Did they ever have a Sombrero Rosa here? Same concept as Two Pesos and Taco Cabana. They had a couple in San Antonio for a while.

I haven't made it to lankford yet, but the gold standard for me is the BP prime burger at Beck's Prime. I haven't found one to top that here or in Austin (or anywhere else).

Fish & Knife on Westheimer. Took about 3 years to build and I'm not sure it was even open a year before they closed.

The article says they're known for boozy milkshakes. Anyone tried one?

Don't hold your breath. This sounds like the equivalent of a corporate mission statement.

I'm seeing some slant in the first and third pictures. May not be as dramatic as in the rendering, though.

Can we run it down Richmond through Afton Oaks? Since there won't be a light rail line there, there's an opening.

I think they're talking about business travel that might involve the port, although the comment really seems to be saying Dallas has the better airport and we've got the port so tying the two cities together with hsr is going to make Texas overall a even better place to do business. I guess they aren't aware of IAH, though. Could be the author only flies Southwest into Hobby. So if we've got an awesome airport AND the number one port in the US, do we really need hsr to Dallas? Maybe we should run it to San Antonio instead. SA is a lot more fun.

Study: Houston GDP Would Jump 3% If Toll Booths Removed
august948 replied to H-Town Man's topic in Traffic and Transportation
I've used the pay by mail option in Austin a few times and each time the bill I end up paying is about 3 times the actual toll amount. It takes them around 2 months to get the bill to me and it always has a past-due fee already attached. It's a good concept, but I get the feeling they're deliberately soaking the me each time I use it. -
According to the Houston Press article the writer is from Austin. Must be a shut-in not to notice that rush hour in Austin is an endless traffic jam. Could be it's hazy in his apartment because of what he's smoking, but I'm not seeing the haze hiding the city of Houston. Matter of fact it's clear and sunny from where I sit. Maybe he was in this car when he toured Houston...that would explain a lot.

Houston Tomorrow Suggestion for Dynamic New Mass Transit Solution
august948 replied to nativehoustonion's topic in Transit
You're right about the arterials. How about we elevate the commuter rail above the hov? Connect the rail with the existing p&r lots/stations so you can tie into the local network or take p&r buses to areas not on the commuter line. -
Houston Tomorrow Suggestion for Dynamic New Mass Transit Solution
august948 replied to nativehoustonion's topic in Transit
I suspect it's the drainage that would be the big problem. I spoke to some foundation companies a couple of years ago and they told me that bedrock here (at least under my house) is about 22 feet down. Above that the soil moves. You'd have to go down that far plus however much the tunnel is plus some to build without having to worry about the soil conditions. Seems like it would be cheaper short and long term just to elevate. Who knows...if they decide to elevate part of the hsr maybe that will inspire some elevated commuter/light rail. -
Well so much for that... "Rick Perry suspends his presidential campaign" http://www.chron.com/news/politics/us/article/Rick-Perry-suspends-his-presidential-campaign-6499093.php I guess we still have Trump to keep us entertained...

MeMa is a southernism for grandma. Could it be Mema's as in "grandma's" (bakery, deli, etc)?

Get the NoScript add on for firefox. It blocks all scripts running on a page and gives you a toggle list in case you want to turn some back on. Once you take a look at the list you'll understand why the chron page is so bad. With the scripts turned off, it loads in a flash. The only things I've had a problem with so far is slideshows and video, but those can be individually turned on if needed. Seems like most of the ad inserts (heb, kroger, lowes, etc) come in the mail now so I don't even bother with the print edition anymore.

Looks like that's a generally good idea. According to this some people paid up to $80 to park for Taylor Swift and got broken into to boot. http://www.chron.com/entertainment/music/article/Taylor-Swift-s-Houston-concert-had-multiple-car-6495814.php

What's Your Favorite Grocery Store?
august948 replied to IronTiger's topic in Houston Area Dining, Shopping and Entertainment
Central Market sells beer and wine for consumption in their seating area and patio. Don't think I'd go so far as to call it a bar. The new Whole Food on Post Oak actually has a microbrewery/bar. All the other Whole Foods I've been to have had bars put in recently. Haven't seen that at any other grocery chains, yet. EDIT: just remembered you can buy bottles of beer at the main Phoenicia and I recall there being a bar at the downtown location. -
