  1. No kidding. Anyone out there remember what happened to traffic congestion after the 80's oil bust? Reason I ask is rush hour traffic in the energy corridor seems the same or worse than it used to be even though we keep hearing about layoffs. Did traffic congestion fall off a cliff after the 80's bust or is that a false indicator?
  2. If we know the cat is in the box, then the cat is actually NOT in the box when the flask of hyrdocyanic acid breaks or doesn't break and so the cat is therefore always alive.
  3. And therefore everything you don't know is right. But once you know it, then it's wrong. Ohshitohshitohshit...
  4. There used to be a Christmas store at the Kemah boardwalk. Not anything huge but neat place to browse if you're there.
  5. We drove past at 10pm last night and the drive-thru line was backed up on Westheimer all the way to the light at Fondren.
  6. Scare tactics are, unfortuantely, part and parcel of our democratic process. Remeber the "throw granny off the cliff" ad? So would HERO allow a law-abiding, transgender man to use a women's restroom or not?
  7. My thought on this is that Houston's upper class isn't as dependent on oil money as they used to be. That bodes well for us in any oil downturn as these are also the folks that can drive investment and growth. Also, it may reflect the mentality of those in the upper paygrades at oil companies that this is more of a blip or correction in a longer term boom. Of course, it just opened so we'll have to see if this kind of retail has staying power or if it slides down the scale to more of a City Centre type development (still not bad in my opinion).
  8. They may try, but I would think a boycott would be even less effective than they normally are since it was a voter decision and not a leadership decision. It's much easier to put pressure on an individual politician than it is to put pressure on the mass of voters who voted it down. If HERO comes up again, and I'm sure it will, proponents better find a good way to counter the men-in-women's-restrooms argument. That seems to have struck a visceral chord with every woman I've heard discussing it. I'd be curious to see a breakdown of for/against by gender.
  9. We tried to stop by around 5:30pm today and couldn't get near it. There was a huge crowd out the door and in the parking lot and the drive thru line went through the KK lot and wrapped back around into the Target lot as far as I could see.
  10. Saw this in the Chron this morning and thought it was interesting. Don't know if they'll be able to pull it off, but it'd be pretty cool if they do. http://www.chron.com/world/article/A-new-Colossus-could-rise-over-Rhodes-6601601.php
  11. When is Krispy Kreme openning? Answer: 6am tomorrow morning (Nov 3). For the Dunvale location, at least. First 100 through the door get free doughnuts for a year. According to the flyer, they're expecting some folks to camp out tonight. I'm not that hard up so I'll just stop by later in the day to get my fix.
  12. I've probably had more than 40 such anniversaries...but then I mostly grew up in the southeast.
  13. The answer to that question will be the crowds at KK when they finally open. Personally, I find Shipley's to be mediocre thus my interest in the KK opening.
  14. Heard indirectly from a contractor that the grand opening is Monday or Tuesday.
  15. http://www.bloghouston.com/blog/2013/10/10/mayor-annise-parker-pledges-build-light-rail-airports/ It was a campaign promise during a mayoral debate in 2013. We all know that anything said during a campaign is pretty much bs designed to get votes so you can't give it much weight.
  16. I grew up on the gulf coast and have sat through enough hurricanes to know it's more fun to watch it on tv than to see it in person.
  17. It's been a long time, but I think we left just after the peak and headed towards Austin. Took 6 hours total to make a 2.5 hour drive. Most of that was getting to Hempstead. After that it cleared up considerably as half the people peeled off to go to College Station. Passing through Giddings they had the local police out directing everyone to keep on moving through town. We waited out the storm and then came back on Sunday. I had to look at the wikipedia article on Rita to refresh my memory, but I think we left Thursday night around 8pm or so. Got to Austin about 2am. Rita made landfall Saturday morning and we came back to Houston on Sunday. After Rita I started looking around for a job with more flexability so we could leave way in advance, if needed. We did that with Ike, leaving 3 or 4 days before expected landfall. Like mentioned earlier in this thread, after Rita many people decided to sit Ike out rather than risk sitting in evacuation traffic. I guess it's murphy's law that Rita mostly missed us and Ike hit us full-bore. Afterwards I heard from co-workers about 24 hour trips to San Antonio and Dallas and started counting myself lucky that ours was only 6 hours. We didn't have a gps at the time and with only memory and a fold up texas map we decided just to stick to the main roads. While we were in Austin I bought a detailed Texas map book and kept it in the car until we bought a gps several years later.
  18. You need one of these... I use one on the beat-up huffy I ride around on for errands. I think the lock itself cost more than what the bike cost 25 years ago when I bought it. I figure no one's going to bother trying to get through this thing just to steal an old bike.
