  1. Inside the crowded nightclub Rocbar last Saturday night, women in cocktail dresses danced on a couch. Like the trendy lounge Mosaic next door, the immense downtown bar was mobbed with 20-somethings. Located on the second floor of Bayou Place, both clubs open onto a shared stylish balcony overlooking Wortham Center. Below them at street level is elegant restaurant VIN, whose talented young chef was imported from San Francisco. What makes the three ventures unusual is that they are conceived and owned by a division of Bayou Place's landlord, the Cordish Co. Cordish's reasoning: If you can't find the tenants you need, create them. "It's a brilliant strategy, an ideal way to fill a hole in a tenant mix," because they can get exactly what they want, said Michael Beyard, senior retail fellow at the Urban Land Institute in Washington. It's not easy for developers to create their own concepts as Cordish has done, because typically they have no expertise in nurturing retail, Beyard said. In 2000, Baltimore-based Cordish established a subsidiary called Entertainment Concepts Investors, charged with creating business ideas for its entertainment-oriented projects across the U.S. "It was time to reinvigorate Bayou Place," said Reed Cordish, vice president of the Cordish Co. "We've raised the bar high with these concepts." full article

  3. A crane at a downtown construction site toppled on its side this morning, crushing the cab of a pickup. The driver of the truck, William Huther, was not seriously injured. It is unclear whether the worker in the crane owned by D.E. Harvey Construction was injured. Investigators are on the site

  5. happens quite frequently and for longer periods. i know the monroe expansion from almeda genoa to fuqua has been in the books for more than 10 yrs but the funding keeps being taken away. this yr it is supposed to happen!

  8. Most everyone who passes through the City Hall rotunda agrees the new reception desk is beautiful, with its imported marble and shiny trim, and spacious enough for both police and city security officers to monitor the building. With a price tag of nearly $37,000, it also was expensive. The desk was custom-made for the city by a local company that used marble from Italy to match the building's 1930s-style architecture. It made its debut in the lobby of City Hall several months ago, where it serves not only as a sign-in desk for visitors and a security station but also as a topic of conversation. Though the city paid only half the cost of the large, L-shaped desk

  11. i apologize, you didn't that was jax. i think the pavillons location will make it unique. IMO the merchant types there aren't.
  12. downtown is filling in just nicely. the pavillions, more residential, some commericial. Perhaps in the future the population will support the specialty grocery store you desire, but it isn't needed currently.
  13. Yes. mr hughes paid for many improvements, including the tower and its name was changed to HH Airport. Later it was discovered that federal funding would be denied if it was named for a living person so the name was removed.
  14. downtown's not ready for a specialty grocery store.
  15. i still like their brick entrance to the neighborhood. while not fancy or anything, it really does add something special. would be interesting to see some old pics of the area.
  16. i've heard both sides on this one....the latest was that it wasn't because of the load the new one can handle. but if it does GREAT for Hobby! The convenience of Hobby is unbeatable.
  17. The capacity of brays is lacking from the med center westward. should any major rains occur, likelyhood of flooding is higher..... you can go to tsarp's website and put in your address to see whether you're in the flood plain.
  18. that's not a massive apartment complex, it's a high density development.
  19. "pot calling the kettle black" might not be appropriate in this instance! LOL
  20. Someone with a plan, like Cho, would have done whatever is necessary to obtain weapons. He bought some of his supplies on ebay. The brady bill may have stopped a few purchases, however he still would have obtained weapons.
