METRO already does this from downtown quite nicely with the greyhound type buses and in a timely fashion. there's no way a METRO designed light rail line could compete timewise. costs would be very high just based on distance.

GreenStreet: Mixed-Use Development At 1201 Fannin St.
musicman replied to MontroseNeighborhoodCafe's topic in Downtown
it's more simple than that. if the businesses there are good (have good food, drink, entertainment) it will succeed. if the businesses are mediocre, like bayou place, it won't take off. -

the ordinance is supposedly coming before council today. the mayor said that he wants to put a 90 day hold to ensure that the ordinance doesn't just affect a particular project but will help the city as a whole.

"soundproof" Windows
musicman replied to riceman's topic in Houston Construction, Home Repair, and Improvement
the drapes would be a good start. with a large portion of the noise coming from the lower frequencies, that's the type that isn't easily eliminated. -

IMO, the heavy trash program is one of the few that actually works. while it used to be more frequent, once/month is still adequate for most homeowners.

Repair Or Replace
musicman replied to heightsfan's topic in Houston Construction, Home Repair, and Improvement
you should've been able to install bracing without removing the floor. the few pieces that were bad here were easily replaced without disturbing the remainder. luckily i got some floor from a trash pile down the street. it's aged already and worked out nicely. -
Repair Or Replace
musicman replied to heightsfan's topic in Houston Construction, Home Repair, and Improvement
anything could break depending on the weight. i don't think you would have to add a subfloor. you could add support if you were concerned but adding an entire subfloor wouldn't be cost effective. and the answer to your question would be yes. are you having signs of cracking boards? -
building a copycat development seems lazy and cheap to me. if you want city leaders to dictate what is built, creativity will be lost. Houston's image will not improve. while i agree that historical structures should be saved, it shouldn't be done at the city level, it would end up limiting growth. each of us can do our own part by convincing others that quality structures are being destroyed and being replaced by a structure not meant to last a lifetime. btw where do you live?

Repair Or Replace

remember the wood is designed to flex slightly so there will be occasional squeaks. this is can be dependent on humidity and temperature. i would say your floor does have a subfloor. a floor person could go in from the bottom and attempt to secure the loose board without affecting the finish. -
blocking the sidewalk or a ditch is a big problem. they will write tickets for that.

depending on conditions, sometimes they do random sweeps. you just never know
