Vertigo58
My Dad took these slides: These are grrrrrreat! The only photos we have are all indoors in various Dept stores with Santa at Grant's, Penney's, Foley's. All date from 1964-1971. They are neat because you can see the transiton of mid-60's mod backgrounds/attire to late 60's hippie psychedelic/fashions/scenery. Funny how camp it seems now while things like Woodstock, Vietnam and war protests were raging on. Love American pop-culture.
TxFireguy
As you can tell I am new to this Forum. I am a native Houstonian, and I have relived many fond memories from everyone here that posts. When I was younger, junior hi, I usd to take the bus downtown and visit 2 "Magic Shops." I can not recall their names. Anyone got any ideas? Also, while still on my bus ride, I would stop at Guy's Newstand, to pick up the latest "Sporting News." I believe it was located in at least 2 (maybe even 3) different locations. One being, I believe where the Continental Club is and the other (s)??????Look forward to reliving the past.... Anyone got any ideas?Welcome! Might one of the magic shops have been Morty's Magic Mart at 808 Texas Ave? There is a photo and a link to more info here. Frankel's still maintains a magic section at its Polk Street location - though the last time I was in there, the helpful man behind the counter in the magic section said that it was likely the section would be eliminated soon. Apparently, today's magician prefers to shop on the internet.

One being, I believe where the Continental Club is and the other (s)??????I remember that Guy's (Main @ Winbern) - it was open until about 1990 or so. There was a fairly large newsstand just off Main, north of the Pierce Elevated and next to the Red Dot Diner (present site of the Metro Transit Center). Was that also a Guy's? Can't remember the name; it ceased operations about 20 years ago.

We went to Guy's for years and yep it's where the Continental now is. When Guy's closed I knew it was the end of Main St as we knew it. Something was blowing in the wind. As an addition Guy's always had those cool newspapers & mags from all over the US & world. That is why it was so well liked ...or was it that scary porn section in the corner and also welcome, but be real nice to everyone or you get voted off the island! We used to go there to get Sunday papers from other big cities to pour through the job listings after college. So that would mean it was still open in the late 80s. Yep, the one on Pierce was World News. They had an entire back room devoted to porn, much of it older, second-hand issues being marketed to "collectors". Guy's and World were the last old-style newsstands in town - when Superstand opened several stores, it pretty much put the last nail in the coffin of the older places. Then Superstand went under after several years, and there was nothing to take its place until Issues opened on Shepherd just north of Richmond (if you look closely, you can tell that they purchased the magazine racks from the former Superstand location that used to be a few blocks further north on Shepherd). I really miss both Guy's and World - I was a regular customer at both for years when I lived nearby about a block off of Alabama. At least Issues is still around to serve the market for obscure specialty periodicals that are harder to find at most bookstores.
TxFireguy
I think that perhaps it was indeed Howards that I went to. The names Morty's and Frankel's seems familiar, but I do not think I visited them. All I know is that what led me to take the trips downtown to the magic shop was courtesy of reading all of those ads for "Magic Stores' in the backs of comic books I read back in the 60's. Of course I never did get my X-Ray Specs. I had forgotten about World News. I do not think I had gone there as often as Guys. It seems from reading the replies that me and every other "kid" in Houston rode the bus downtown every now and then to see/buy something that we could not get near where we lived! I want to thank everyone for the "welcome." Being a native Houstonian and never left, I am always thinking of places and things from the past here with fond memories. Before I post something I will try and make sure it was not brought up on a past thread. Don't want to get kicked off of the Island....I know I will like it here. As they say, I wish I had taken a photo way back when..... See you at the Monorail. Later

MPerhaps it was Frankell's?They used to have a location on Fanin...just west of downtown. Id ride the bus down there myself to get gag gifts. I went through a practical joke phase while i was in junior high....so Id go down there for joke gum, fake doggie doo, etc. etc.jr
brucesw
There used to be a newsstand on Texas in the same block with the Greyhound Bus terminal. It may have been connected to the terminal but I always went in from the street; I liked to pick up out-of-town newspapers and still have clippings from some of them dating from the 60s. I can't remember the name of the place.

They moved, I think a couple of times, and the last one I knew of was right beside the Pierce Elevated close to Louisiana. There was also a newstand just off Main on the west side, close to the courthouse complex, but I can't remember what it was called. I know it is a bit off topic, but you forgot to mention either a nice cold bottle of Dr. Pepper. 7 UP or Delaware Punch to go with that dog that just came off that steam roller when you first walked in and gazed upon them. Sitting on the wooden desks and looking up at the big menu on the wall...It did not get much better than that. Of course I had to catch the bus back to Westbury NOT Bellaire.... StripesAce
What good will that do?Savoy is fine, but the old Raddison? is an EYESORE. All the airconditoners were pulled out and theres nothing but graffitii on the windows. It'd cost so much money to move back in.What is the story behind the savoy? I told my GF i bet it was a staple hotel in its day.

Jax
The Rice Hotel is now the Rice lofts. And there are restaurants and bars on the ground floor. It's actually pretty nice. I never saw it back when it was a hotel though.

devonhart
What's with the keyboard demo percussion in the background? It was to represent the military beat of conformity of the 50s where everyone was expected to behave in unison and without question. Or the footage was silent, so I added the air raid siren and the uncopyrighted percussion so youtube wouldn't yank it off for copyright infringement. Either one works for me. TheNiche
Yeah, and I'm sure running a freakin' TANK down the middle of the street didn't help much either!...Yeah, I saw that thing blitzing through downtown and was just wondering: 1) who pays for the damage to asphalt, and 2) why? What can a tank do amongst highrises? And if the scenario was that a bomb had just gone off, then what can a tank or jeeps do amongst piles of rubble? It looked like an excuse for a parade, to me.
