Very good restaurant. Sounds like they are leaning into pizza. I'm in.

Glad to see Jonathan's The Rub opening in Gatsby's Grill's former space at 2929 Navigation Blvd, Suite 200. Hope it will do well at Navigation Place.

Folks go the Navigation and are willing to pay-up so they can go to Ninfa's.  They don't go to Navigation to look for a place to spend a lot of money for a meal.  Hope Jonathan's does great...but, I have my doubts.  I just don't think that the demand is there yet.

With the article specifically saying a focus on a pizza, I think they are pretty aware of the demographics. I do think something like local foods would have worked better there but at least this time, it's a known commodity.

Food looks amazing but menu and price point are extremely similar to Gatsby's which failed at the same location. Hope it works out better for this team. Definitely looking forward to trying it out.

I think the biggest problem with Gatsby's was less the price (which I agree was not in line with what it should have been) but their wildly inconsistent food, overt mismanagement, and poor service. All of which likely stemmed from trying to open two new restaurants at once.

I know for a fact that Jonathan's The Rub is very good food and Jonathan has been a part of the Houston food scene for nearly 2 decades. I'm excited that someone who could open somewhere like the Heights and thrive, chose to come to this part of Houston. You need people like him with actual connections in the food community to take this risk for the neighborhood to get where I think it can be.

The most recent leasing materials for Navigation Place. It appears the materials were updated in November.

Based on the updated site plan, the 6,000 sf unit that was previously available is being divided into two units. One of the units is leased to Re/Max. The address for the business is 2929 Navigation Blvd, Ste 120.

Jonathan's The Rub now appears on the site plan. As reported in November, the restaurant is leasing the 2929 Navigation Blvd, Ste 200 unit. It was last occupied by Gatsby's Grill.

Navigation Place is a retail center is located at  2929 Navigation Blvd.

Several more sign permits were purchased yesterday for Jonathan's the Rub at 2929 Navigation Blvd, Suite 200. The restaurant is located in Navigation Place.

  • Signs electrical installation permit
  • Sign construction permit
  • Sign operating permit

Details from the permits:

  • Use: N3 Ilum 1fc 49x6x22 Steaks, Seafood, Etc. | Jonathan's the Rub; N3 Ilum 1f 38x7x22 Jonathan's the Rub  Cocktails, Etc. Etc. Etc.

  • FCC Group: High technology sign

It appears the permits pertain to the restaurant's outside signage.

Jonathan's the Rub looks like it may open soon. If I had to guess, I'm assuming it may be looking to open next month or early June at the latest.

A few week's ago, the restaurant had its pre-opening inspection with the health department. There are also hiring posts for waitstaff. All are usually signs that points to a business nearing its debut.

what a spastic blend of offerings.

not in a bad way, well, I guess we'll see, but that's just a very odd jumbling of flavors to adorn the same menu, I mean, if you 2 couples going out on a date night, someone wants a cup of gumbo to scratch their Cajun itch, someone else wants a nice chicken fried steak, the third wants eggplant parm, and the last one wants a perfectly cooked flounder, well, it looks like there's a solution!

are they going to make garlic bread, cornbread and southern style dinner rolls? what kind of sides are on offer? mashed potatoes and white gravy, green beans, collard greens, coleslaw, fries?

I wish them well, and I hope (unlike other restaurants in the same location) they last long enough for me to go more than once.

Couldn't agree more.

I have some faith this time. This is neither their first outpost nor their first expansion. The other locations seem to be doing well.

I hope it's less of an over extended flash in the pan like Gatsby's and has better service (and less premade frozen food) than Acadian Coast

On May 23, this neighborhood favorite is opening a third location in Houston’s East End, 2929 Navigation. Levine’s first expansion outside of Memorial will add to the restaurant’s comfort-food focus by jumping on the current craze over another dependable dish: pizza.

Most days it seems like the Chronicle is 40% restaurants and food articles.   It would be nice if two of those food reporter positions could be converted into one local news reporter position, instead of what appears to be farming a good portion of the "local" content out to interns in San Antonio.

Tried Jonathan's yesterday and don't think they'll last long at this location just like the last two concepts who occupied the space. I think most East End locals will be put off when the first question the server asks you when you sit down is which of their 5 different sparkling water options you'd like to order. A bad margarita is a killer on this side of town as well. Wish them well but I likely won't be going back.

Likewise, I tried the place yesterday and was unimpressed. Hopefully, it's a reflection of the new opening and things will improve over time.

Food and drinks weren't bad by any means, but nothing stood out. I, too, had the marg, and it wasn't as inspiring as either of the two places across the street -- and theirs are cheaper (especially when one can catch Ninfa's $25 pitcher happy hour).

The owner visited our table after seating and suggested the Mexican pizza, claiming it was the best dish. This mirrors a claim he made in the Chronicle interview. Again, wasn't bad. It was perfectly fine. Just am able to get comparable taste for less at many of the pizza places in EaDo like District 7 or Vinny's.

Pizzas and burgers aside, much of the menu was in the $28-$60 range per plate. Drinks, as well, were $12-$18 apiece. If this location's short history has shown one thing, the customer base willing to spend $50 to $60 plus tip per person for a meal and one drink isn't very large. Acadian Coast tried to do higher cost cajun, and it didn't work. Jonathan's menu was surprisingly similar to Gatsby's -- left side of the menu is more affordable salads, burgers and pizzas, while the right side was higher-priced seafood and steaks. Gatsby's didn't last with this formula.

Granted, this statement is based solely on one visit the second day of opening, but we surveyed all the tables around us, and everyone stuck to the pizzas or hamburgers. We didn't see one $35 fish plate or $50 steak.
