Jax
This is great to see. I didn't believe it would actually be renovated, I thought the signs were just there to make us feel less bad about the abandoned building, kind of like the stories about the old Days Inn...
arrodiii
Walked over there at lunch (Hubcap Grill burgers are entirely decent)...Not to get too far off topic, but you should check out the Burger Guys Wednesday - Friday at Cafe Luz, next to Bayou Lofts. A little of a trek for most, but definitely worth it.

JoninATX
I can imagine what the inside of the building looked like when it was boarded up all that stale air inside, but I am glad to see it being use.
NenaE
I would like to see the inside.

rsb320
What is so historic about it?It's old - built in 1932. I'm unsure of its historic significance, though.
Bob Fretz
This is a building designed by William Ward Watkin, which makes it quite important to preserve.

lockmat
http://zieglercooperarchitects.blogspot.com/2012/05/ziegler-cooper-architects-and-fretz.html Downtown, the team is restoring 27k SF 500 Fannin, which was built in 1931 and stood vacant since the ‘80s. Ziegler Cooper is usingWilliam Ward Watkin’s original drawings and will restructure the two-story first level, including restoring a mezzanine level that had been filled in. Paul is excited about the canopy, which he says is unique to this building’s character. Maintaining the interior is challenging, though, because it needs major changes to get up to code. At the end of June, Fretz will begin to office in the top two floors, which feature skylights most modern buildings lack. It's also going for LEED Gold. http://www.bisnow.co...ory.php?p=24377 If this is recent, it's in awful condition right now. Glad this is happening. Eiknujrac
That Bing shot isn't up to date. The whole thing is surrounded by scaffolding, and it looks like they are installing windows. I'll see if I can get a shot later.
kylejack
Yes, that picture is how it looked before the restoration started recently.

ttuchris
This looks great, but does anyone know the reason for the black plate glass on the third floor? I am just wondering why the one floor is different.
LTAWACS
Maybe space for a datacenter.
sevfiv
The windows were just different originally and they decided to keep them that way instead of what the rendering showed (without the larger plates of glass). Maybe the tinting is just for environmental issues..
ricco67
Looks like they pretty much finished the exterior, I gotta say, its far better looking then I thought it would be.
Triton
Maybe space for a datacenter.a datacenter??? uh no, datacenters rarely have large glass around them, no matter the tint. They are usually in closed off rooms with walls all around them.
slfunk
Thats a great building. With the thin rectangular floor plate and big windows, this would make a great option for residential open lofts or home for a group of small businesses. I realize they just finished up with the exterior. If they rework the storefront at the bottom (floor to ceiling glass or just lower the halfwall at the window sill and make the storefront uniform), it would work well for retail. j_cuevas713
It would compliment the Hogg Palace lofts near Market Square nicely.
ChannelTwoNews
Apparently work inside was finished in September, and it looks like they'll be having an open house in May... http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/blog/breaking-ground/2013/02/historic-500-fannin-gets-a-facelift.html Several before/after photos are included in the post.
