George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)

I think that what citykid is saying is that he personally doesn't have anything against 41, but that some people mistake 41 for 43 and then might associate 43 with Houston, and that we should care what idiots think about us.

I wouldn't call the majority of America idiots. When people think of Texas now, they think negativley because of Bush. I wish Texas would drop the whole Republician act and go back to being a Democrat state. Take a look at this that I found:

What do you think of this? Face the truth, the rest os the US hates Texas now.

It shows the rest of the US joining togeather in blue, but stuborn Republican Texas it alone in red.

That's because the rest of America isn't lucky enough to have lived here. Citykid, I think Atlanta is a S#!TThole, and I would never live there, does it mean I am right ?

If people are going judge a place by it's airport, then more power to them, but thankfully they won't come here to try and dumbdown the rest of us.

BTW, The Republican thing is not an "act", it is the only way to truly have freedom. You can go conform all you like in Georgia, just don't try to infect us with your Socialist politics.

LOL, at 'its the only way to truly have freedom', I think the last 7 years speak for themselves with republicans holding so much power (ok 6yrs). Look at the crap we are in now. I hope these idiots learn their lesson that the country is not only about jesus christ usa issues, and start using their brains a little more this time round before voting.

Yeah, everyone knows all those backwards Georgia Socialists like Martin Luther King and Andrew Young were shoving equal rights and freedom for all Americans down God Fearin', and pure from all wrong Republicans' throats! Funny how King is now a hero in their eyes 40 years later.

The Democrat Party's stronghold has historically been the South. Their base were the good ol' boys. That didn't really change until about the 1970's, after MLK was assasinated.

Regardless, I think you missed the point and the hyperbole.

Man, you skip over a thread for two days in this town...

Are you kidding me? Let me guess, you're a journalism major and are hoping to land a job at the "Chron" one day?

Racism and socialism are two different monsters - don't confuse the two. Dr. King was about "hand-ups" and not "hand-outs". Any decent person, regardless of political affiliation would respect that.

I hate how the airport in Houston is named after Bush two (don't give a damn which one, but the second one has given both a bad name).

You meant "too", right?

If people are going judge a place by it's airport, then more power to them, but thankfully they won't come here to try and dumbdown the rest of us.

I'd like to think if we (Houston) were judged by nothing else than our airport (IAH), that we would be viewed favorably.

Have you seen the ratings for shows like Survivor and American Idol?

I would rather someone be entertained by a scripted reality show than a stage set sit-com, complete with canned laugh-track to que what is supposed to be funny and when to laugh.

Umm.....

I think we have a topic we might have strayed from.

Not that we EVER get off topic here....

yeah, so about the "Big Airport", i call it either IAH or Intercontinental. i was on a flight not to long ago and a woman (who was telling me her life story for about 2 hours) thought she was flying into HOU where her entire family was picking her up for their reunion. so apparently, or maybe in this particular situation, people still get mixed up although a quick check will tell them where they are going...

  • 2 weeks later...

Growing up in LA we used L-A-X all the time so it seems natural to just say I-A-H. "Big airport" makes it sound like you just can't remember its name. But yes, I have heard plenty of news anchors and traffic and weather reporters refer to IAH as "the big airport". Like it's superior to Hobby? dunno.

On my last flight into Houston the air hostesses repeatedly called it "George Bush Airport." American Airlines, FWIW.

Well it's AA. What do they know about IAH.

By the way, if this merger between Continental and United or American goes through, IAH will drop to the size of Hooks. Not really, but I'd imagine the passenger counts would fall drastically.

Is this the new politically correct term for flight attendant? First it was stewardess... then flight attendant (when more men entered the fray)... should we start calling them "air hostesses" now?

Funny thing about this topic...

A lot of people don't understand why we have an "Intercontinental" airport as opposed to an "International" airport. They forget that Continental Airlines is based in Houston, and just jump to conclusions assuming that we think we're better than other US cities. Just so you know, people will use that against Houstonians.

In reference to the actual topic, I use the term "Bush" all the time, but would prefer not to call it that for personal reasons.

I don't refer to "the big airport" as Bush any more than I refer to 59 as the Lloyd Bentsen Freeway. It only encourages them.

Just so you know, The airport was named "Houston Intercontinental Airport" in 1969, when it first opened. Continental Airlines did not arrive in Houston until 1982, after a hostile takeover by Frank Lorenzo and Texas Air Corp. "Continental" and Intercontinental" have absolutely nothing to do with each other, other than one being the hub for the other.

Oh, and we ARE better than other US cities.

Here's how the signs at ORD refer to IAH:

Actually "air hostess" is the least politically correct version. It's also the oldest name I've found. It goes back to the British Overseas Airways Corporation days (pre-British Airways, post Imperial Airways). Beatles fans will remember the lyric "Flew in from Miami Beach BOAC, didn't get to bed last night."

"Air hostess" is probably the second-worst thing to call them. "Waitress" would be the worst.

That would be cool if it were true. Then Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport in Guam could be renamed Won Pat Intercontinental Airport since it's the headquarters for Continental Micronesia.

I've lived here all my life, including before Intercontinental was built. It's always been "the big airport." The Bush name is a very late addition. Speaking of the word "Intercontinental," has that been used on any other (international) airport? I can't think of one. The pretentious-ness of that cries out for a parody like "Intergalactic."

I still call them stewardesses when letting them know that I speak Jive.

But don't call me Shirley.

I wasn't aware of that, so thank you for correcting me.

In light of that, I would have to say that naming the airport "Intercontinental" as opposed to "International" can be viewed by oustiders and Houston Haters as quite pretentious. But of course it's a big help for name recognition either way. The only reason that I have caught myself referring to it as "Bush" is because if you say "fly in at Intercontinental" people get confused... "I'm flying in on American Airlines, but where does the plane land? Bush, or Hobby?"

  • 1 month later...

This according to the Chronicle. This project will pave the way for the long-anticipated replacement of the "Banjo" concourses in favor of a design consistent to the rest of the terminals at IAH. This project will also include a second FIS facility as well.

Consider this....Terminal E and its FIS facility costed $300 million dollars. I'm interested to see what a $1.2 Billion Dollar Terminal B will look like...

(EDIT: Sorry for the lack of a link...no copy/paste on IPhone)
