  1. The (clamp on) lightbulb in a bucket thing is used to control fleas. The fleas jump toward the light, fall in the bucket and drown. Never heard of it for controlling skeeters.
  2. They've stripped off all the awnings and other materials to reveal the original brick structure. I hope they restore it to look as it did when it was built. The building reminds me of a small-town Main Street storefront. The for lease sign is still up.
  3. The West U/Med Ctr area has many selections. There are two Randall's, two Kroger's (one is former Albertson's), a Rice Epicurean, Whole Foods, a giant Fiesta, Seller's Bros., Target/Archer Farms (or whatever). Until recently, there was a Davis' Food City on Stella. I can't wait until the new HEB on Buffalo opens!! I don't have a devotion to any particular store, I just go where the sales are that week.
  4. Gated and domed planned communities. Now that's the ticket. And, don't let that gate stand open and let that good cool air out!
  5. That was the former Tenneco Building it is now El Paso. I think it is the one with the hole in the top. That building is currently undergoing major updating.
  6. I was under the impression that it was the parking lot adjacent to the Wedge Tower. There's plenty of room for it there, plus it'll cover up that 12+/- ugly parking garage wall at Wedge and will eliminate a surface lot. I think it's highly unlikely that Chevron will sell their (daycare) lot, especially seeing that their buying the land where the Y stands.
  7. Even though this is technically North Montrose (NoMo ) it's got the River Oaks name. Judging from this design, I guess we can refer to River Oaks as a suburb of Houston once again. Weingarten should have come up with something a little more unique for this location.
  8. The parking garage under Jones Plaza appears to be on fire or at least a car is. Smoke is billowing from the 4 corner points of exhaust. HFD is onsite. Otherwise, I don't know the extent of the blaze. The thought of being in a smoke-filled underground garage is sort of freightening.
  9. With the exception of Wheeler, why would anyone ride their bike to any of the other locations with bike racks. They need to be installed at or near stations where people live, like throughout Midtown.
  10. I'm a 14 minute walk to the nearest MetroRail station. Ultimately, I'd like to ride my bike to the station and lock it in a rack, but there are none to be found. I'd also be worried about vandals, etc. That point is irrelevant anyway since my bike was stolen. Taking the train daily would only save me about $1.50 a day and to me 28 minutes of commute-walking a day is not worth that. It is good to know though, that if my car is in the shop, I'd have that option to get to work or the doctor.
  11. There's another (what appears to be) similar apt bldg at Westmoreland and Burlington. I noticed the other day that they had a "Flats for Lease Sign" out.
  12. Actually, Sears is the parent company of KMart. I wasn't serious in suggesting that Target take over the (Rice-Owned) Sears store. It was just a fantasy that someone would come in and restore the exterior. I'll make a point of shopping there some time, it just never crosses my mind and it's right around the corner. Wal-Mart does have better "Man Stuff", that's where I generally get my fishing gear/license, etc. But then again there's always Academy. My experience at Target/South Main Saturday was so pleasant. Everyone was so well behaved and civil. I was asked by three different representatives at various times if I needed assistance finding something. Target in Midtown NOW!
  13. Too funny, Skies. It varys what I call them. 288 is always just that. The same goes for 290. With 59, I call it 59N/Cleveland or 59S/Victoria, but sometimes refer to it as the Southwest Freeway if the destination is before the Beltway. For I-10, I say I-10E or 'The Katy'. 45 is the Gulf Freeway and 45N. I've never really given this topic much thought.
  14. I'm with you. We inner-looper snobs gag at the thought of a Wal-Mart.
  15. There's an entire block between Main and Travis, near Richmond where a McDonald's used to be. That'd be really bad news for Sears, though. I say Target should move into where Sears is and restore that building to its orignal splendor. I live in this area and never think about going to Sears because it's so drab. I always just go down to the South Main Target. A Target in this Midtown location would rock my world.
  16. I'm really digging that shiny glass. When complete, it'll really give the skyline some bling.
  17. Not to be a downer, but I wish they would've at least paved it prior to applying the art. OMG! They started with a dirty canvas.
  18. I think this statement really says alot. ''If you have no choice as to your sex, male or female; if you have no choice as to your color; if you have no choice as to your sexual orientation; then you have to be protected and given the same opportunity for life, liberty and happiness,'' I'd like to add... Otherwise, it's discrimination.
  19. I can't imagine someone tearing down that house, it's lovely.
  20. I lived one block from the 100 year during Allison and did not flood. Allison was a 500 year flood event. Keep in mind that in Houston, we're not only flooded by hurricanes and tropical storms. We can really get some bad-azz T-Storms throughout most of the year. I'd just try to find out from people who've live in the area where you're interested.
  21. Regardless of the cost, I'd take it down before it falls on your neighbor's house.
  22. Hmm, I thought that Kroger was just fine. They must be shaking in their boots with HEB coming and want to make the place look real purdy inside. I've got an idea: Take a petition at your (Finger?) property and state that you will all shop at HEB exclusively if they don't knock off the night time noise.
  23. Shirtless in the parking lot is fine, but he should have gone to his trunk and put on a damn shirt prior to entering a place of business. No shirt, no shoes, no service!
  24. Um, the Kroger across from the HEB on this thread was completed a few years back. Are you referring to the Heights Kroger thread?
  25. I drove by yesterday evening, but I didn't see an architect reference sign. There are signs for JE Dunn Construction http://www.jedunn.com/. The HEB project is not listed on their site, though. I can't wait for the store to open. I'll probably abandon Disco Kroger for this new store.
