  1. There it just went again, to the east.
  2. Does anyone remember the Bavarian Gardens at Waugh and Feagan?
  3. Sylvester Turner decides not to run (for the 3rd time) for mayor. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metrop...an/6504498.html Kathy Whitmire is not a lesbian. She was a widow while in office. She lived in Montrose (Hazard & Colquitt) though, and then in Woodland Heights (Bayland). The last I heard, she had remarried, has long blond hair and lives in Hawaii.
  4. Today, there's been a Chinook helicopter going back and forth, east and west, along I-10. I am downtown. Anybody know what they're doing today?
  5. I think motor bike cops with sirens and PA's would have been more effective - and safer.
  6. I had NWS radar up and could see it coming, but then it parted at I-10 and missed Montrose/Westmoreland (a few sprinkles). I could see your lightening, Music. And, I could see dark clouds and lightening to the west too.
  7. Ah, it goes under the railroad tracks. I'm sure I've driven through there, but never considered it a tunnel and had a special name.
  8. I remember the rail car on Kirby @ S. Main being a Droubi's. It was really close to where that Smash Burger is now.
  9. Yeah, I mentioned 1980 in the original post of this thread. We've even been breaking 1980 records the past week. Hopefully, we'll get our 30% precip later today.
  10. I was there and let me tell you, the crowd was rambunctious, but not unruly. I feel this incident was an unfortunate accident, but should not be written off as the HPD statement does. After, having enough of the parade, we needed to cross the street. I made eye contact with an officer on foot and motioned that we wanted to cross. As soon as the coast was clear, he gave me the signal. The third person in my group (of 3) was stopped by a mean lady cop, until the guy that helped me realized and permitted it. When you have huge crowds and the darkness of night, accidents will happen and this one needs to be investigated. If I remember correctly, abusive force was used by mounted patrol on protesters at the GOP convention at the Astrodome.
  11. I just had lunch at Spaghetti Warehouse last Wednesday. There are tales of the building being haunted, or ghosts being seen, etc. From what I remember is was a pharmacy supply warehouse and a guy was carrying boxes and walked into an open elevator shaft. The ghost is said to be that of his wife, who is still looking for him.
  12. I like the design, but it sure is unique. I'm not sure about the "box car" siding panels or their checkered color scheme. I'll wait until it's fixed to pass judgement.
  13. I too, drove through Homestead, on my way to Key West, after Andrew. Ignore my comment above - those houses were "Blown the Hell Down". Of course central Houston is 45-50 miles inland, where Homestead is/was not. The pine trees looked like toothpicks sticking out of the ground. I also went to the Acadiana Music Festival in Lafayette after Andrew. It was messed up too, but nothing like Fla.
  14. Geez, Crunch. Forget about the depressing housing market, your comments are depressing ME. However, they're all good points. Remember that with Ike, we were hammered for so many hours because of the size of it. I'm not so worried about wind because they're not likly to "Blow the House Down". What is it they say Run from the water, hide from the wind? I was here during Alicia and it was hot as hell after that storm, with no power for a week. My friend's/family's policy is to stay put during the storm to take care of your stuff and whoever has power after the storm can expect company.
  15. It's been Skybar for quite some time now. I think it stopped being Cody's in the late 80's or early 90's. I knew the manager back then. Cody's had also opened a club in Galveston. It was where that giant trumpet or coronet sculpture is. As far as I know, they still have a happy hour buffet. It's really awesome to sit out on the roof balcony and watch the sun set and then the Transco beacon comes on. Back in the day, it was really cool to be up there during fireworks events. You could see DT, Hermann Park, Sharpstown, Clear Lake, etc. displays in the distance. I think Scott has another (sports) bar west of the Galleria. Also, if I remember correctly, Scott is a graduate of HSPVA.
  16. The heat index is calulated using relative humidity and temperature. I don't know the calculation, though. In the winter, they use wind speed and temperature to calculate the wind chill factor. If someone knows the specifics, bring it on.
  17. Notice in this link that Allied Bank Plaza (Well Fargo) is under construction and the El Paso building says Tenneco along the top.
  18. Nicely said, Capn. I think there will still be some outlandish sights. I think they've started to realize that these type entries get the most cheers from the crowd. I wonder if they're going to have the giant mirror ball hanging in the intersection of Montrose/Westheimer this year. They did not last year, but I can't remember why.
  19. If you don't know the origins of the pride parades, this is an interesting explanation on the Stonewall Riots of 1969. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonewall_riots
  20. Dateline on NBC will also cover both deaths from 8-10 tonight.
  21. It looks like some clouds have moved in and the temp is dropping somewhat. Also, there appears to be a shower over on the east end. While window gazing, I noticed something is on fire to the north of DT.
  22. From the angle of where I sit, it appears that Discovery Tower/Hess has surpassed 5 Houston Center in height.
