  1. Look here: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...?showtopic=5225 Apparently, they held out as long as they could.
  2. It kind of looks like the Bellaire Theater strip center of the 40's or 50's (at Stella/Weslayan). Well, 2008 just called me and they'd like to see something a little more current and bold.
  3. This building has been known as Black Angus, Condederate House and now State Grill. We lost The Stables and now Felix. I guess it's just a sign of progress, but it's still hard to see these Houston traditions vanish. Molina's on Buffalo is also closing, but I think they'll just be moving to another location. I think I read that HEB is building something there at Buffalo and Westpark.
  4. Maybe somebody will bring back the Copa to that strip center. Lola, can you hear me?
  5. I just wonder why, all of a sudden, they tore it down. It's been vacant for years and it's not like it will increase the parking spaces substantially. We can always keep our fingers crossed that something decent will be developed there.
  6. Tyvek is going up toward the southeast corner. The round turret on that corner is covered, so I guess that's the final shape (round).
  7. The old BankOne drive-thru was torn down yesterday in the 300 block, between Louisiana and Smith. Does anybody know why, and/or if they intend to build something there? The rest of this block has been being used as surface parking. Did we just sprout another entire block for surface parking? Let's hope not.
  8. I think that when the curtain is applied, you'll really be able to notice the floors getting wider as the building gets taller. I can't think of another building (off the top of my head) that does this.
  9. Wow, they are all variations of a single design. One difference is that we will have two, completely identical, right next to each other.
  10. Do you think a white guy can comment accurately on a Fajita Tower? Jalapeno's had a really great Sunday brunch. Before it was Jalapeno's, it was a gay piano bar and restaurant called Rascall's, I think. Also, I think we should wait and check out these new places after they open before passing judgement.
  11. This building looked much better with the signage on it. Now, it just looks like an unfinished, blank space. If the building is falling apart, I guess it'll have to come down. It's right on the banks of Brays Bayou and I'm sure the ground is unstable. I'm sure they now take this into consideration regarding the engineering of foundations. Years ago there was a swimming pool on the ground level. Prudential must have moved over to the West Loop in the 70's (@ Bellaire). This building on the West Loop was subsequently occupied by SBC after Prudential's departure from Houston.
  12. Maybe it was named after "Silver Dollar" - Jim West. http://www.houstonhistory.com/ghoustonians/history8bb.htm
  13. As I understand it, Kirby will we widened and reconstructed. The number of lanes will not change, they'll just increase the width of the lanes. They'll also put in a center esplanade with turning bay lanes. This setup will probably force people to take the direction of the side of the street they're on and hook a U-Turn from one of the 'cuts'. So far, coming from the south, construction has made it up to University Blvd. They are placing these giant culverts for drainage beneath. Seriously, you could drive an SUV through them. The construction phase will be a nightmare, but overall, I think this contractor is doing a pretty good job at not disrupting traffic flow as much as possible.
  14. Swamplot has an article today naming some of the retail that has signed up for this location. http://swamplot.com/ Looks like there will be lots of places to eat and drink.
  15. The Fannin South lot is only $2.50 on week days. I'm not sure about weekends.
  16. I know. I live in the West U/Med Ctr and people are crawling all over the streets at night with their pups, etc. Regarding Willow Bend - It's Willowbend (one word). Also, there are some smaller, older homes between Buffalo Speedway/Kirby/S.Main.
  17. Check out Willowbend. I have some friends that just bought in that area and it's really quite nice. I didn't ask the purchase price. Meanwhile, if you decide to rent, I'd check out the Museum District/Montrose area. That's really close to Rice U. I totally do not agree with the comment about not being able to walk "anywhere inside the loop" at midnight. Here's one in Willow Bend ($139.900.). http://search.har.com/engine/dispSearch.cf...mp;backButton=Y
  18. It seems to have been a trend for homes built in the late 1800's to be demolished in the 1920's. It may have been because the older homes were not equipped with more modern conveniences. Here's a cool link of some of the grand homes that used to be downtown. I wish more would have been saved or moved (some were). http://www.houstonhistory.com/poduct2/album3/jsalbum.html I'm always facinated by the architecture and grandness of homes like these.
  19. The Washington National Cathedral is an excellent example of traditional European, Gothic architecture. However, it took 83 years to build! Our cathedral is designed as so because that's what the church wanted. See quotes below. "There's a kind of peacefulness and serenity about it in the inside that I hope will be conducive for people, for their worship and to again bring them closer to God," he said. Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza helped in the planning of the co-cathedral and decided to keep everything simple. "These clean, simple, noble lines help accomplish that," he said. "It brings the attention of the worshiper immediately to the center spot."
  20. Maybe the employees of their Westheimer/Dunlavy story might know of a status.
  21. Their website says 1111 Main St. Coming Winter 07/08, whatever that means.
  22. I see backhoes and other equipment racing in and out of there in the morning, but I'm not sure where they're going or where they came from. They are coming from the east on Elgin.
  23. It looks like this center will be located in the Mayor's first of 10 proposed wireless internet bubbles. He wants to provide this service to low-income areas. However, I can't see the need to surf the net while shopping at the $.99 Store.
