  1. I guess I'll get over it because they'll save more trees by removing a few. This is the same as they did to build the new school. Believe me, the neighborhood has very watchful eyes on this. I hope one of the trees going is not the in the one in the old building courtyard. Think of how many kids that tree greeting every morning. Has anyone heard if they are going to just keep that old incinerator chimney? They didn't tear it down because endangered Chimey Sweep (birds) migrated there. It pretty much looks like it's incorporated into the building, except the brick doesn't match.
  2. I thought about that too. That's Dallas/Allen Parkway @ Bagby.
  3. There's one even closer, at Kirby and Main. So that would sort of be just across the street.
  4. It looks like the construction pace has slowed or just moved inside. This morning there was just one guy standing inside gazing out the window. I did not notice a sign.
  5. Yeah, as I recall they've replaced the sidewalks from 45/59/288 westward and putting in planters, etc. The gate to the Mix is open every morning, but the equipment that they store there is out working somewhere else.
  6. No, 300 La. St. is not near City Hall and nothing is being built there. They just tore down and old drive thru and now it's all surface lot. City Hall is about at the 800 block. I go by there every day and I don't know what you're talking about. They are remodeling the DT Library
  7. Barry's was a standalone white brick building with alot of white lattice. Chili's was across Fountainview from the Magnolia. Chili's was a wooden green building with white trim. That's were I got hooked on chips and salsa after moving here in '79 (oh, and Margarita's too).
  8. I remember Luke's on Shepherd - yummy burgers! Biba's and One's a Meal are the same entity. I'm not sure if it's still there, but One's a Meal is/was in the old IHOP building on Memorial, near Westcott.
  9. That was first opened as a Marriott Courtyard. The units were apartment-like. I've noticed some construction between Kroger and S. Braeswood, but I'm not sure what it's going to be. I'm sure it will be some form of retail.
  10. Barry's used to be at the southwest corner of the Windsor Plaza parking lot at Richmond and Sage. The first Chili's I remember in Houston was Richmond and Fountainview, diagonally across from where Barry's is now.
  11. I wish they'd close that Valero and tear it down. It's like Skank City in there. I remember when a Prince's Hamburger's drive-in was there. It was much like Sonic today, but had a retractible canvas covering. There was another one over by Sears at Main & Wheeler. Back in the day, they had car hops on skates I'm told.
  12. HEB was in the back, where Spec's Wholesale is now. Man, I love the original design by Finger. Just an example of a bad, more modern makeover.
  13. I've heard it said that the trains can't make those turns on the curvey parts. Not sure if that true or not.
  14. I remember the 2 Cinema Theater. It was either a General or Lowes. It was kind of in the back (west). It closed and was torn down shortly after the Myer Park 14 opened. I also think Oshman's was back there. Actually, that hobby place (Michael's or Hobby Lobby) building is probably the old Oshman store.
  15. The International Festival continues through next weekend. I went to the opening ceremony last Friday at lunch and got food from one of the vendor booths. There's supposed to be a free lunch time concert this Friday, but I have no idea who the entertainment will be.
  16. Those man-made hills used to be common. It seems like I remember people sliding down that hill, now at the entrance for the Westpark Tollway. Other hills were in Meyer Park and Buffalo @ Bellaire, but those were used as (golf) driving ranges. I wonder where all that dirt came from and where it ended up.
  17. I just walked by the metallic one, so it's still there. It's a Chase drive-thru. It must have been built the same time as the TCB/Chase Tower, because it has the same gray granite with chrome/metallic accents. Regarding the original topic - it's a surface lot, they're already using. I wonder if the price will now go up from $4/day. Still this lot is far more appealing than say, the lot to the north of the Chronicle. What an eyesore.
  18. I just looked at maps.live and indeed, it was white. Also, the landscaping is far more mature than the pic. I just looked out the window. Ah, I figured it out. The metallic one is at 200 Louisiana, between La. and Milam. I can't see it from here, the Kim Son garage is in the way.
  19. That's the one. Funny that I don't recall it being metallic and I went by it every day. Maybe the finish had been painted for faded or something. Anyway, they are now parking where it stood before. One positive think about this surface lot is that it's landscaped and has good concrete paving, unlike those other crappy broken asphalt lots. There's actually an oasis of greenery in the middle, with bushes around the perimeter.
  20. This was an old BankONE drive thru. It was white with blue accents. I remember the one you're thinking about, but can quite place where it was/is. I'm thinking it was back down in Midtown somewhere (maybe San Jacinto).
  21. Nobody's mentioned the Parade Disco on Richmond. It was just west of the apartment complex, then known as 1400 Richmond (it was really a cruise-plex). The Parade building is now a Menil Collection storage facility. Anyway, the Parade was owned by Jerry Minaffee (sp) of New Orleans. I remember meeting Grace Jones there one time after her concert at the 'Summit'. Also, when Kathy Whitmire won her first term as mayor, on election night, she, Lance Lalor and other elected councel showed up and the place went wild. The fire department tried to clear it out, but backed off in the end. Hello, like it or not, that was their new bosses-boss. Also, does anybody remember Hungry International, on the south side of Westheimer and Helena? It burned and moved to the Village. Houlihan's was also on the northeast corner at that same intersection. One more thing, the GYM across the street from Katz's was named Jim's Gym. I've read this entire blog to this point in one sitting - talk about brain burn, but great memories. Not done yet... I remember seeing Paul Lynd at the Parade and Dr. Bellows (I dream of Jeannie) at JR's.
