  1. I got the card that said I would receive my Census Form, then I got the form, and then, the one about jobs. Today, I got another Census Form. Do I fill out another one? This one says "YOUR RESPONSE IS REQUIRED BY LAW". I don't recall the original one stating that. I also, was going to hold it until April 1st; it is poorly worded. I went ahead a mailed it when I heard on the news that responses were slow. Well, duh! Does anyone proof-read anymore.
  2. I've always heard that they had a waiting list. I guess with the economy and all, one unit will sit vacant for a short while. I wish there were more complexes with character like the Isabella. It should be used as a model for future Midtown development.
  3. I think that recent survey put Montrose as one of the top 10 neighborhoods in the country. I wish I had an answer to the parking problem, but at least the possibilities/restrictions are being reviewed. Stay out of my parking spot!
  4. There's activity on the site today. It looks like they're ripping up the foundation from that old warehouse.
  5. They began digging and ripping up the old park this week.
  6. HPD Crime Site puts 4300-4399 Garrott on the other (south) side of the Spur in 77002. GoogleMaps puts the address at Richmond Ave. HPD's site sucks, by the way. http://mycity.houstontx.gov/recentcrime/index.html
  7. This building is obviously topped-out. How come it didn't get a tree? Or, was that just an 80's fad?
  8. My thinking is that, since the cops thought she was a lady, so did her john. He freaked because she had a weenie and wacked her. I'll bet that she was murdered elsewhere and the body dumped there because someone knew of the idiot little forest.
  9. OMG - I've walked that 'cow-path' through that lot, walking home from those bars behind the Breakfast Klub. A neighborhood bum asked for $, but I just told him that I drank it all and that was that. I was wearing man clothes. I've heard that the old Skyline Apts at Ala & Spur (now painted yellow/gold) are under better mgmt and it's actually pretty decent. The Skyline @ Ala & Garrott needs to go, however. I caught this before I finished - the location described is in the Montrose Commons (south of Alabama). Sorry, I had the wrong intersection. Thanks for the heads up. Where was this information obtained. I'll ask a neighbor/area business owner if he has any details.
  10. Back to the neighborhood - it appears that they began installing the bases for street lamps yesterday - ooh la la. Those cobra lights are useless, since they're up in the trees. Music, stealing my spare would require breaking into my car. That did not happen, they just left the brake rotor sitting on the concrete.
  11. I just figure that somebody had a flat and went shopping for one that fit. It wasn't like bling or nothin'. I mean, really, it was factory GM.
  12. This is actually the Westmoreland Historic District, which is where I live. It's a great area and has a lot of people on bikes, scooters and on foot, walking dogs. Sure you'll see the occasional crazy bag lady or a can man or two, but they are harmless. The Civic Association hosts great parties and is inclusive to all residents. I live in a small 20-unit complex and out of the 20, you will find: Ages ranging from 21-71. Blonds, brunettes, red-heads, black - guys, girls, gay, straight, Bi (probably) - Asian, Black, Hispanic, White and so on. So, if my immediate surroundings are an indicator, it is very diverse. The Ensemble Station would be less than a 10 minute walk for you. Traffic on this street is minimal because it dead-ends into the Spur (Where you will find St. Danes - cool, straight bar). Sure there are car break-ins, but no serious crimes that I'm aware of. Hell, my damn tire got stolen right off my car. I have a new car with wheel locks now. With the new mayor living approximately a block away, I would expect patrols to increase. I do know that some of our usual uniformed officers have gone to street clothes. On another note, does anyone know what the montrosedisctrict.org black Ford Explorers are up to? The windows are pretty darkly tinted, but are being driven by a uniformed peace officer of some sort.
  13. Um, that's a completely different topic. City elections have never been party based. Candidates, or the elected, are registered or affiliated with a party perhaps, but they have no obligations or pressures to act on issues preferred by any particular party. (Have I gone crazy with the commas?) Who was our last Republican mayor? I think it was Louie "Don't Shoot" Welch. Correct me if that's not right.
  14. Um, this post was originally about shoes on the lines at 9th and Alexander. I always understood the shoes on the (any) lines to be a prank, because you can't get to them. I guess it works fine as a reminder of a tragedy and something to remember her by. BryBry, it's Montrose; a bike on a street corner is tame. There's weird stuff all over my hood. Something that really irked me about this fire truck accident was that Dominque reported the location to be near River Oaks (ooh, la, la). It's straight-up Montrose - say it!
  15. They stripped the brick from the exterior. The brick is all piled up on the interior, so hopefully, they will just re-lay the old brick facade.
  16. I'm not giving this tool a lot of weight. I live in 77006 also, but only score a 72. I can easily walk to Baba Yega, Kroger, Walgreen's and Sears, as well as the Social Security Office.
  17. I was contemplating where to have dinner tonight and was considering Feast, since it's really close. After seeing the topless dude, I've dropped them from this evenings meal choice - thanks Attica! I'll consider them again once after I get that guy's image out of my head. Yuck, yuk, bloohah!
  18. I just saw it on NBC. Sure looks like Rice to me.
  19. More power to them, but I'd be interested in where such a product (meat) is obtained? I'm going to have to venture over there sometime and check it out.
  20. They began gutting this building today. The For Lease sign is still out front. The windows are gone, but it looks as though they'll keep the original brick (General Store type) front facade.
  21. The coldest ever temperature measured in Houston (IAH) was 7 deg. That was over Christmas in 1989. I remember my parents returning to town to find water streaming down their driveway. The pipes had burst in the attic. The new complex on the rail line in the Museum District were wrapping their newly planted palms today. They are pretty tall. The place is under construction, so they had the means to get jacked up that high to do it. My theory as to why so many tropicals flourish in parts of Montrose is that it's so densely built that the plants are more protected than in wide open spaces, with less brick and mortar. I always remember all of the (early) cold fronts that chicken out at Conroe. I call that the Pine-Line. It's quite evident - notice next time you make the drive. I'd say that's where the zones change. I've used the light bulb method for providing warmth as well. If you're going to wrap a plant and the wrapping is going to touch the plant, use fabric. Plastic will cause damage. Plastic is effective for a tenting method though. Flashback - that 1989 freeze killed many palms around the city, like Highland Village and River Oaks Shopping Center. Let's hope it doesn't get that bad.
  22. These can't be as invasive as a plague of Grackles, can they? I had originally heard that the Grackles came up from South America, like fire ant's, but in looking into it more, they're native to northwest of here (Rockies or something). I read that the population was down, like 61%. Really, been downtown lately? At least Bulbuls are cute. What song do they sing? It's got to be better than that quhaaaak and sqeaking and what not!
  23. We will, no doubt, lose many tropical plants - that's what I hate. We haven't had such a hard freeze in so long that many have been flourishing and pleasing my eyes. Super hot summer and super cold winter, go figure. Not to take this off topic, sevfiv, but I recall these trends to be, in fact, part of global warming. Either way, my body does not like it.
  24. I think east Montrose is a good bet. You've got major bus routes on Westheimer, W. Alabama and Richmond. Plus, there are 2 to 3 rail stations within walking distance. You've got Disco Kroger, Midtown Randalls, along with Fiesta and Sears. Oh, and don't let me forget two Specs, Walgreen's, endless restaurants and bars. I had a roommate from Chicago 25+ years ago and we lived in Montrose Commons. He was able to get by without a car way back then, because he didn't have wheels. I moved back into the same general area a year ago. I have a car and will always have a car, but it's nice to know that if said car is in the shop I can take a 14 minute walk to the rail station and head downtown. I've yet to go shopping on my bicycle, but that's in the plan. There are tons of people walking throughout the neighbor daily with their purchases. One more thing - you better be ready to go if you call a cab. I'm serious, they are usually there within a minute or two.
