  1. I was wondering what the red thing is that is adorning the top portion. Looks like a giant red tarp rolled up.
  2. I'm not sure if it's really in our culture to light up the buildings with a lot of flash. We do have a sign ordinance Downtown that doesn't allow company logos to adorn our skyscrapers. Or if the companies that reside in our buildings are conservative and don't flock to the well-lit ones vs the dark ones. Maybe a bit of both. Unless the city or renters in the towers ask for more nighttime features, it's unlikely to happen. The reason it's so dark now is the freeze. Everyone complained about Downtown "being lit up like Christmas" while people in the surrounding neighborhoods froze to death. Ever since then they haven't turned everything back on again. Also being asked to reduce power during the hot summer months have probably prompted them to stay off. We're just not a very "commercial" city. We'd prefer art to cover the blank walls of parking garages and the Wedge International Tower. Other cities would likely have a huge advertisement there. It's kind of cool not having advertisements in your face all the time. If only we could bury all the telephone poles we'd have a mighty fine city. Driving in LA or Dallas, you'll see a ton more adverts. They're really plugged in, so to speak.

  4. Dang, I didn't get that at all. I think this is more of a marketing thing where if so many people say they want a gym or a bar or whatever, the developer will consider the local audience. So it's up to all of us to scan this and spam comment "We'd like a Super-Tall Mixed Use Ritz Carlton Hotel/Condo/Office and I oop slay the house down hunty". I believe in us.
  5. Honestly they could have a nice path with trees and vendors from NRG Stadium to the Light Rail stop. Otherwise you're just roaming a huge dark parking lot. Doesn't feel dangerous, just uninviting. I don't really care what happens with the Dome anymore. Should just turn it into a giant parking garage to clear all the surface lots, turn them in year round fair grounds with trees. Could easily get rid of all the lots and maybe even sell some of them to developers.
  6. This building is huge. Is there going to be a fast food place in it as well?
  7. It's interesting the market has created what most major cities already have - but without the transportation. This is like the Ferry Terminal Building in San Francisco or Auckland, or the WTC station in New York. In a ideal world, of course, this would be our HSR/Amtrak/transportation hub. The real entrance to our City.

Inspired by the Editor's post about 20 years of HAIF & Bilbao58's posts in SSC about projects that are less than 20 years old - I present: The Highlighter Google Earth Downtown Houston 20 Years of development image. Green: New Build Yellow: Renovation (saved from abandonment, which is why the Leeland Federal Building is not notated, or the Allen Center). Purple: U/C buildings missing from the outdated satellite imagery. Feel free to add in or ask me for corrections/amendments. A cool visual of the amount of investment in our city! Personally, I'd be happy to see donut apartments fill in every surface lot over a Supertall. But a new Supertall would be nice ;)
  10. At least patrons/patients visiting for their medical needs will know exactly where their co-pays & out of pocket medical expenses are going.
  11. I'm going to have to give Segundo another chance. I ordered a latte and asked how many espresso shots it came with and the two people working told me none 😑 and it wasn't good, super muddy sediment at the bottom.

  13. I hear "Light Rail" from people who live in Houston, "Metro Rail" by Metro advertisements only (seems kind of forced), and "the train" from people who get hit by it or comment on Chron articles.
  14. Don't worry Editor, we're all aging at the same pace ;) Hotels and businesses have taken a hard hit during the pandemic, but hotels especially. This is not a Houston or Marriott thing. Mexico, New York, Montana, all the same. Getting a hold of a warm body is tough. Half of the business numbers on their own website don't work, the number listed on google or apple maps don't work. If you do talk to someone, there's zero communication between that person in the call center and the hotel desk, and zero communication between the hotel desk and the person on the next shift. It's not really new. COVID-19 has just highlighted it. Also the same for Reliant or any service provider for anything. No one cares anymore. Really you have to laugh it off to avoid being a jerk. Same applies to managed leasing properties. I used a crazy lady apartment realtor a few years ago. She did all the dirty work for us. Didn't pay her outright, just put her name as a reference on the lease. Apartment Finder website is useful to browse from afar, but the pricing is usually off, not by far though. Add in a google search and you can get a pretty good idea of what the property is like. Reviews can be helpful too. Of course electricity will be expensive. How many other energy retail providers are on the Fortune 500 list? Downtown was bumpin' pre pandemic. Every bar and restaurant packed. I remember eating dinner in Osso & Kristalla and thinking to myself "wow, this city looks and feels different". Still in pockets, around the ball park, discovery green, market square, and spots along Main. Discovery Green was always busy during the day. The rest more quiet other than people walking their dogs. You should definitely try Phoenician. It's probably the best Grocer in Houston. As for the Light Rail, I think everyone is disagreeing with someone who has their easts and wests mixed up. The Light Rail ends on Capitol under Memorial. The original plans called for a Washington Corridor to the NW Transit Center. Everything got derailed a while back which is why we're seeing BRT proposals instead (Post Oak Blvd, down Richmond, and from the Theater District LR stop to the NW Transit Center.
  15. I would take a thousand of these over 1200 Post Oak, The Mercer, The Titan, or the Harris County Civil Courthouse. Anyway, point I was trying to make is 5959 Richmond was also a cutting edge retail/office/mixed use design (I think it's a good period piece). That it would change the way retail/strip centers were done going forward in Houston. It didn't. This won't either. It's an exceptional development, but will not set any guidelines for other future retail projects in this city.
  16. I'm sure someone said the same thing about 5959 Richmond Ave back in the day. This project is the exception rather than the rule.
  17. Not really sure what his warehouse/steel building is (across the street from the Gym). I've seen the gym patrons use this lot and the one next door as an overflow parking. Anyway, there were a ton of workers on the roof this week. Anyone know what business or storage this is?
  18. Hopping on a train would be great to head down to Gtown and drink on the strand. Some of the best bars would be a serious walk though. But going to the beach and lugging stuff around sounds annoying. Especially families who would have to park or get to Downtown, then hop on the train with their screaming litter... exhausting.
  19. Eh, it's close enough to Downtown. People call Greater Eastwood the 2nd ward even though it's south of Harrisburg (originally the 3rd ward).
  20. Everything in that picture is new since 2001 (except for the building across the street and the defunct square concrete jail)? Plus all the beautiful additional advertisements in the ballpark.
