  1. That works until the public officials don't install them because "people go around barricades". http://www.houstonpress.com/news/public-works-didnt-install-barriers-for-flooded-underpasses-because-it-assumed-drivers-would-ignore-them-8340075
  2. No park for south downtown? But it could take the pressure of discovery green for the superbowl events
  3. Maybe there's a developer considering putting a driving range in the middle of town houses?
  4. Saw that they had furnished the model apartment the other night Block 334 model by Christopher Hisle, on Flickr Block 334 model by Christopher Hisle, on Flickr
  5. The problem would be passing the local trains with the express trains; the system just wasn't designed with that in mind. There are some cross over points, but it is more for operating with a closed sections of lines as opposed to bypassing stops. The only places where the trains could pass would be Burnett and UH stadium - they both have a pocket for trains to pass.
  6. That's ridiculous. It might be faster for you to walk that! Maybe HAIF can get together and buy one of those tunnel boring things to make a subway
  7. In my experience, buses are good for going short distances (1-2 miles) on a local, or long distances if its an express like the P&R buses. The problem with the bus system as it stands is it relies on frequent local buses - great for short trips, but horrible for the scale of Houston. That's what the Purple City proposal was trying to address, by making it possible to have through HOV/HOT lanes that go both ways, which would allow more rapid bus service.
  8. How will anyone move out with the elevators taking 10 minutes to wait for. It trapped me on the first floor this morning. That doesn't even make sense!
  9. That pavilion would look so much nicer than the concrete box parking garage there now
  10. Will the currency lounge be semi-open to the public, i.e. could I go in there and chill for a few minutes before going home? Or will it be more of a lobby to a big building where if you aren't supposed to be there big guys named Jeff will escort you out?
  11. It was probably rebuilt with 30 year life to save money. I do like the idea of 45 bypassing downtown, but I don't know what the cost of that is compared to the mess they are proposing. Could the sell of those blocks pay for expanding east loop?
  12. That is for sure something downtown needs a bit more of - chains that suburbans/tourists know the name of that aren't closed after 3 pm. Last I checked, the Chipolte in the Post Rice wasn't open Saturday or evenings
  13. The not needing to turn thing for light rail I didn't even think of - my bad. I wonder if you could have a stop at each terminal - either in a loop or straight in straight out. And I was thinking you'd have a small security check point at the light rail station if you extended the sky train there. A good light rail terminal might be right where that hotel is. It's already centrally located and has the toy train connection. The top speed of the trains metro has been buying for the light rail is 66 mph - that's the signed speed limit on the test track south of Fannin south. To get that speed you would have to grade separate - it would be much better if you could get a 70+ mph train with grade separation all the way to downtown.
  14. Update: There is an Aldi going in, but it is between Tierwester and La Salette next to the new Whataburger. This site at Scottcrest has something going on - dirt turned, earth movers roaming around, and a handwritten sign that says "Dairy Queen OST"
  15. I like the bury the pierce elevated where it is idea - but I have an even more crazy addition to it. Don't have a stack interchange at 45/59, and bury the Pierce deep enough to sell air rights on top of it. You could have signage saying for southbound traffic on 45: "For I-69/US 59 follow I-10". Same for 59 to northbound 45. Then you use the current downtown connector ramps for northbound 45 traffic to connect to 59. 59 could also directly go southbound 45 there. This would free up I-45 to stay buried all the way from where it dips under Dallas to west of Dowling. No lost connections - St Charles, Live Oak, and Nagle already dead end at Pierce street. If you need more throughput between on the axis I'm talking about eliminating, run a dedicated ramp similar to what you have connecting 290 and I-10 to go from I-45 to 59.
  16. I've seen some low prices - check the prices Houston House has on their website right now if you want to get annoyed
  17. It would be nice if instead of a just a parking lot it also had some tunnel access from street level. Don't know how they would do it
  18. Nice feature of the new software: it saves your reply in case you accidentally hit "next unread article" instead of "post reply" Not that I've done that. Nope.
  19. I wonder if the city could sponsor a street fair with booths of people selling things, similar to what goes on at mid-main on first thursdays
  20. I think it looks like something from Dr Seuss; I could imagine it being a transport method in Seuss-land to get you to the roof of that parking garage. I especially like the addition of bistro tables under it - I think it makes the plaza feel more inviting to stay in. Before, I wouldn't think of eating lunch there. Now I'm looking forward to the next time I'm downtown for lunch - I think that will be a good place to consume a sandwich or three
  21. Most train connections are a bit away from the terminal, just due to the fact that they need turn around space. At least IAH has a sky train you could extend to the stop, or maybe the people mover underground. Or moving sidewalks. Something that Midway needs from the station in Chicago btw I believe the plan for the airport was to extend the green line down Harrisburg and then down Broadway straight into the airport. I saw that somewhere, idk where. The median of the Hardy toll road could be a good place for a commuter line going out from downtown that stops at IAH; maybe not even light rail. I'd guess that it would terminate at Burnett transit center, especially if it is heavy rail instead of light rail.
  22. 1111 Main for sure has room for decent sized retail on the ground floor. Summary - Main and Dallas has potential, but will require a big anchor in Sakowitz and good tennants in Hillcorp and the old books a million spot. There's also some opportunity because of empty lots at the east end of Dallas. A lot of Dallas is loading docks and blank walls. Going down dallas from east to west in street view, here are my notes: There are still empty lots closer to the east end of dallas where a new shopping center could be constructed I don't really see how 4 seasons could turn their loading dock into any sort of retail. It looks like there might be one open spot next to Ben's beans, and of course whatever the Marlowe will bring. Green street really treats dallas as the loading dock, at least for the house of blues section. The parking garage between Caroline and San Jacinto looks very unfriendly to GFR - they'd have to do extensive remodeling to the building to add any retail. Like Nate99 said, 1111 Fannin looks like it might be able to host some retail. Green street is just so inward facing for this whole street. Only where the last block with Hotel Alessandra and Forever 21 does it face Dallas. The old Sakowitz building really is a big key for this - its the biggest preexisting opportunity, and there's the most potential ground level activity at Dallas and main. The Humble building has the Starbucks in it, and some more spots. I doubt the Police HQ building will have GFR anytime soon. There is some GFR across from it though, and the McDonald's in the garage. Total Plaza and CentrePoint don't look like good candidates, but they're big towers that they could add a spot in if they wanted to in a lobby remodel. Even the Hyatt Regency has a blank wall on Dallas - there's a big canopy entrance on Louisiana, but Dallas is a brick wall. Enterprise plaza (the pink building? forgot the name) has an entrance ramp to underground parking, so I doubt there's much opportunity there. The rest of Dallas is much the same - sporadic GFR spots, loading docks, and the entrance drive for Double Tree.
