Glad to hear you have electricity again!

We have 1% as the standard deductible, but our policy states 2% as a Tropical Cyclone deductible. We have Nationwide, and so are not sure if this deductible is standard or not. We had to really insurance-shop because we have a concrete-asbestos roof and not too many companies will insure a house with that material.

Take a good look at the mediterranean style tile roof at Lowe's and at the Gulfgate shopping strip area new buildings. Quite a few of those got pull up and tossed into the parking lots. :o I thought those were meant to withstand? Just rumor or was it poor workmanship?

The wind and falling debris even tore off the sconces from the Gulfgate buildings. The work sheds Lowes has on display in parking lot were blown all the way to Woodridge in a crumpled mess. I have good pics of the Macy's very old tall sign that came crashing down over Ernestine next to the transit center. I hope someone inpects all OLD signs around here.

Anything (signs) over 10 yrs old needs to be checked but by whom and whom will enforce one wonders?

wonder if Macy's will replace it with a stronger, bigger sign <_< ...a much nicer ,shorter one would be fine. I was suprised to see the Delta Tires still up....I like that sign.

I was surprised to see the very old (former Coca-Cola) billboard scrapped badly but still intact. Someone needs to inspect that one big time and a miracle the Finger's (very dated) square tall signs up. It should have fallen would saved the remodel crew some time.

Take a look at the NEW townhomes behind Chase Bank next to Lowe's, the got all beat up! Imagine being around with all of that heavy flying tin material? Holy crud!

Driving around is a real hazard with all of the nails from shingles.

East Ender here too! I got my power back last Tuesday but cable's still out. Lots of trees down in my area (s. of Leeland) and my neighbors across the street have no power still. My girlfriend has power, but her neighbors (starting at the house that is literally behind hers) don't.

Also, was is just me, or did the Sellers' Bros. shopping center have light right after the storm--only to be knocked out now. Bizarre. I also saw the Macy's sign blocking Ernestine, and Eastwood Transit Center is still dark also.

I was also disappointed by the lack of East End coverage. I'm sorry to hear that parts of the area fared so badly.

How did Forest Hill do? There are lots of large old trees in that neighborhood.

Forest Hill got hammered quite badly. I had to take a tour since we have several friends/distant family there. There were many, many large downed trees on homes. I saw at least several garages that were destroyed all together or at a very severe angle. Would have been useless to try to straighten out.

Forest Park Cemetery had what seemed like fields of fallen branches/trees. Bet they had to rush to remove from resting on mausoleums, plots, etc. Which reminds me to go check on long gone family markers. I recall a big tree right near our grandmoms marker. You should have seen the bayou rising to an alarming rate way before the rain even started! Gus Wortham Park in Idlywood got pretty beat up trees right on childrens play ground equipment.

Media... you sure blew it this time! ;)

I live near Telephone Rd. and Lockwood... the landlord said we were out of power for less than 12 hours. Very fortunate. Also our house... which is all brick, sustained no significant damage.

That 5 or 6 rows of streets/homes across from the newer Cage Elementary always seemed to be quite high above ground level or maybe its just an illusion to the eyes? The area directly in front of the school does flood quite badly though. Water rises high and I am not sure if it ever actually went in the school.

There were several huge metal boxy things that were yanked off of the Macy's warehouse and thrown on Ernestine street.

Sure would be interesting to know if old Stephen F Austin HS got any damage. Just think, they used to hoard the public into these old schools for shelter. :o Guess the practice is non-existant now?

The apts. around Carrillo, (across from Gus Wortham GC) also was hammered. Nothing short of devastation.Bricks caved in, insulation hanging out, awful. The massive trees in front of the school were pulled up and they also do not have electric. Heard many of the kids ended up with nothing but the shirts on their backs. All their clothes and shoes were ruined.

Cannot believe the news was not focused here.

Our part (or perhaps all) of Eastwood had brush picked up yesterday. I have never been so happy for heavy trash trucks to arrive, LOL. I was also very impressed with our neighbors, most of whom came out and helped in any way they could. It was pretty efficient, with one bulldozer grabbing brush and moving it into the street, while a second bulldozer would sweep behind it and push the brush to the end of the street, where a large truck was waiting for it. Residents were out with rakes and blowers getting all the small limbs and leaves out into the street to help out the service. We didn't have as much as other blocks, so it took about 30 minutes.

And the workers did everything with a smile on their face! Perhaps they were happy to have the extra help.

Sunnyland area was also cleaned up for the most part. There still is a way to go and there are also still powerlines dangling oh so scarily above.

Here's one great thing that came out of this is we now have a much clearer & grander view of the downtown skyline from our 2nd & 3rd floors! :P

Seems that Ike cleared up the old aging over grown trees. Someone had to do it! Merraviglioso!

As promised here are some of the scenes of wreckage in and around Sunnyland and next door areas of Country Club Place/Idylwood scenes of most spectacular damage and encroaching bayou waters. Most of these streets were insurpassable for hours and days. Neighbors helped neighbors to quickly remove the debris, downed power lines were the reason most of us could not, nor dared leave the area. Wires dangled or layed on ground for days. We all love trees but they can be our worse enemy in these type of disasters. Media was not to be seen around here ....at all.

I like that old house in the background; it's one of my favorites in the area. I've heard rumors that it belongs to the convent, and nuns live there, anyone know if that's true? It's a fairly large house.

Yes, some of the sisters live there. I would inquire at Villa de Matel for more details. That whole row of homes from that street all the way to Sunnyland were some of the finest in Houston as far as I'm concerned. Were even more stately 30 plus years ago. Were owned and very kept up to the tiniest detail.

That is Country Club Place by the way. The convent grounds or wooded area was heavily cluttered with fallen trees as well and also Forest Park Cemetary further down plus Forest Hill.

It seems like its been forever since Ike.....but the insurance adjuster finally came out to inspect my tattered roof.

I get a new roof, including bringing it up to code with proper decking! Woot!

My settlement will help offset the cost of upgrading from asphalt shingle to metal. Any recs from you HAIFers on metal roof suppliers/contractors?

I know, I was thinking 15-17 grand. Is that in the ballpark?

i think it depends on the type of metal and how decorative.....i looked about 3 yrs ago and the price they quoted me as about 90% more than what i thought i could get it done with composition. there were lots of variations though.

Just as a starting point, I'm assuming double the cost of compositon shingle.

Also assuming it will be months before I can actually get anyone to do the job.

I recently discovered this metal roofing product:

http://www.atas.com/Products/Roof/Shingle/...92/Default.aspx

It comes in several colors, and the tabs help prevent against uplift. Plus, it's historically appropriate for older homes, as it closely resembles the old asbestos diamond shingles.

Thanks for the link. The only thing I'm familiar with is the standing seam roofs. I've just started my research. Very helpful.

I read this board a lot but usually only post in the high rise or "going up" section. I work for a contractor - we can help you. We have plenty of crews right now because we are still waiting for adjusters to settle claims.

Give me a buzz - Heather at 281.222.5199. Anyone else who needs help with their work or dealing with their insurance company, feel free to call me, too. We'll do a free inspection and will work with your insurance company on your behalf to get what you are entitled to. Also, as a GC, we can do any interior work or sub it back to you to help offset your deductible.

We are insurance restoration specialists and my company, Watlee Construction, is from Florida, so we have done many storms. I'm a Houston native, though and have been in real estate and construction for over 10 years.
