Glad to hear you're safe. Any damage by you?

Minor Chimminie Dammage and fence fell. Lost 2 large trees - but luckily they fell away from the House. So we did well. Sent my wife and 2 daughters to northwest side for the storm, while I rode it out in Clear Lake. Glad to see all HAIF members surviving.

As of 9am 9/17, The Westbury was still powerless. Natural gas supply is working, water pressure is fine, so we can cook stuff OK. A neighbor on the next street has a very loud generator that they run 24/7. It slowly fills the rest of us with murderous rage.

On Sunday a gang of 20 or so neighbors helped cut up the tree that was gently leaning against our house. A fence slowed its fall in such a way that it never hit the car underneath it and seems to have done minimal damage to the roof. The Westbury has some very friendly neighbors. I didn't get a chance to count how many of them were gay.

Monday the FMB and I took a trip down Sugarland way. The first surprise was that Fry's was open. They had a cool car charger system for my phone and a tire pump that runs off the cigarette lighter (slow leak developed the day before Ike). They also had a large tin of Almond Roca. I love Fry's. We found ice and bread at an HEB down by the Grand Parkway and ate yummy breakfast at an IHOP on 59.

Tuesday the FMB had to report to work, so I spent the day reading and hunting for supplies. I found a very short gas line, ice, meat, Pop-Tarts<tm>, peanut butter and ate at a Cliff's Hamburgers, all on the Grand Parkway. I see now why it is so grand.

Today I'm FMB's office in the Bank of America Center so I can surf the web and get out of the house. We're hoping Doozo is open for lunch.

The love child was evacuated to a yoga retreat half way to Austin so that she could get outside and play. She's got a friend with her and some DVDs, so she won't turn feral.

God it feels good to read The HAIF.

Still no power at my house but lot of houses have power. Most businesses around West U are open and are packed. All the kids are out of school for the rest of the week and everyone is out playing or at restaurants eating.

City has contracted out debris pick up for today. They'll even pick up broken fences! They also had trash pickup for the whole city yesterday and today, I guess the stink from the rotting food was too much for the city. They are also slowly but surely picking up the branches. West U doesn't have heavy trash pick up but they do have branch pick up so we have trucks that mulch. They started that on Monday or Tuesday I think. Regular trash pick up starts Thursday but no recycle pickup. The recycle center on Dinkins will be open starting Thursday, I'm sure it will be overflowing with plastic water bottles.

The city website sucks ass though. Hardly any updates. But I did sign up for the emergency call list and they have been calling me with pre-recorded messages.

I'm so used to the unplugged lifestyle now that the monitor hurts my eyes, and the air conditioning in my office is giving me frostbite.

Still no power in my part of Eastwood; the house escaped with only holes in the roof where the turbine/vents were (which we patched in tropical storm force winds at 10 saturday morning). Stayed up for three hours pre-dawn, bracing the back door and mopping up the water that was streaming in, but the vigilance paid off and we kept the water out. Amazingly all windows intact. All the tree debris removed as of yesterday--the hood is bad with tree damage, We got very, very lucky. Gas water heater and stove so we have hot showers and food. My job, on the other hand.......apparently now I work for the govmint. In this case, our socialist feds have allowed me to keep working, at least for the immediate future.

So happy to see people are back on haif and everyone's safe. Musicman has been my news source all through this.

alternate universe tidbit: I went to Katy monday to get ice and water from my folks, and to do laundry (they never lost power). Mason Rd was if nothing had happened. All the restaurants open, people driving around. I went to the HEB for meat, beer, bread, etc, and was nearly mowed down by suburban shoppers like it was any Saturday. People buying sushi and birthday cakes. But turn off the commercial drag and it was trees down, etc. There were 3 gas station opens that I could see on Mason with huge lines. I noticed as I was getting on the freeway ramp, the Toyota dealership was receiving a new truckload of cars. I has to smile at the irony.

Anyway.

I am so freaking glad to have the haif back!

love, crunch

MONTGOMERY COUNTY DEATHS

There have been two deaths in Montgomery County, Texas that has been attributed to Hurricane Ike.

A 9 year-old boy in the Kipling Oaks Subdivision on Coe Road, who attended Decker Prairie Elementary School, was killed on 9-12-08 at approximately 0820 hours when a tree limb from a falling tree struck him in the head.

The boy's father was attempting to fall a dead tree in the family's yard before Hurricane Ike arrived with its strong winds. When the tree fell the young boy did not move out of the way. An older brother attempted to pull the boy out of the way but a limb from the tree struck the boy in the head.

City of Webster Contractor Statement

In recognition of the possibility that some contractors, during the recovery phase of Hurricane Ike, may prey upon those in need of reconstruction services, supplies and general assistance, the City of Webster, is hereby adopting the following policy effective September 17, 2008:

Any contractor performing construction/reconstruction services, or providing supplies for property damaged by Hurricane IKE shall be required to register with the City of Webster Permit Division and obtain permits for damage repairs. Registration shall be required regardless of whether or not the contractor is based out of a building, a vehicle, or an open-air site, and whether or not temporary or permanent.

For the protection of those of you who have damage, we encourage you to ask your contractor to provide proof of City registration.

CITY OF LAPORTE UPDATE

Fees and permits will be waived for fence and roof repairs. All other reconstruction repairs will require a permit but will be fast tracked. Permits will be issued at City Hall located at 604 W. Fairmont Parkway.

The water supply in the city has been fully tested and remains safe to drink.

The City's waste water system is functioning at approximately 40%.

At this time garbage service has resumed on normal routes.

Debris contractors will begin picking up debris shortly. All debris must be placed on the side of the street and divided into four categories as follows: Household garbage, Construction and Demolition materials, vegetative debris, and appliances. It is crucial that citizens divide their debris in order to ensure fast and efficient cleanup of the city.

Two POD locations are distributing supplies to citizens. One is at 301 E. Fairmont Parkway and the other is at 9801 N. Avenue L.

Boil Water Notice Rescinded for the Entire Houston Area

On Wednesday, September 17, 2008, Houston Mayor Bill White signed a letter addressed to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) rescinding the Boil Water Notice for all customers served by the Houston municipal system. Water samples collected for microbiological analysis are confirmed negative for coli form organisms in all areas. Our chemists and laboratory staff perform over 600,000 water quality samples and tests each year.

We also recommend that citizens perform the following tasks as an additional precautionary measure:

. Flush your water service line and household plumbing by running each faucet until you notice a change in water temperature, typically no more than 5 minutes

. Clean out ice makers by making at least three batches of ice and discarding them.

. Drain and fill your water heater and any other water you may have stored in tanks.

Our water systems serve three primary functions; Public Health and Safety which includes high quality drinking water, Non-consumptive usage which includes usage for other household and commercial usages and Fire suppression. One hundred percent of our water system can currently meet all the non-consumptive and fire protection needs of our community.

We have been in constant contact with our state regulatory agency, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and have contacted our wholesale customers, including West University Place, Bellaire, the Memorial Villages, Pasadena, Webster, Friendswood, League City and many others, notifying them of our status.

I went into work at 717 Texas for a short while this morning 10:15 - 12:15, parked at the Kim Son garage. I didn't see smoke billowing out from the grill at Les Givrales, so I assumed it was not open, but then later saw a group walking back from that area. I got fajitas from the Skyline Deli at 717 Texas.

Oh, Midtown Specs is open - yea!

We came back into town yesterday afternoon via 59S from Texarkana. Lots of torn up stuff all the way down (uprooted trees, ripped up trailers/gas stations) Gas didn't start getting scarce until Nacanowhere. Traffic was a little heavy with all the Asplundh trucks from Illinois caravaning. It was a cool site.

No power at all 3 of the houses we have right now. 2 are in 035, 1 in 096. These 50 year old neighborhoods are awesome but man are the trees vulnerable to strong wind. The neighbors have all been great though. Everyone is pitching in and doing what they can to help.

A couple funny pictures:

When you can't find anyone with a chainsaw, grab your brother in law and an axe:

Or how about a pool party at flippers!

IMG_2930.jpg

I was very surprised to see the city's heavy trash detail already out picking up debris in Parkwest this afternoon. There were atleast 3 rigs going around.

For what it's worth, I didn't see any utility trucks in Willowbend/Willowbrook (save for a few at&t trucks) so I'm not hopeful for power this week.

I'm curious to see what the cleanup effort does to the amount of people that will be house shopping.

A+ Houston, way to hunker, and way to help each other!

Had a note in our mailbox from the HOA in our townhome community when we got home last night. It said not to expect power for another four to five weeks, due to the weird grid that we're on. Also, since our water heaters are electric, no hot showers for the foreseeable future either.

At least we got our running water back yesterday morning.

OMG that is terrible! What exactly do they mean "weird grid?"

Sorry if this has been asked or answered elsewhere, but I couldnt find it.....

I am flying back to Houston this weekend and was wondering if there will be any taxis operating at Continental? It appears that the supply of gasoline is still an issue, so I am not sure if the cabs are back to work yet.

I really dont want to land at Continental and then be stuck at the airport.....

Tetanus Prevention after Hurricane Ike

Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services is urging all residents of Harris County to be extremely cautious around debris and other storm hazards because of the increased risk of exposure to tetanus. Individuals can be exposed to tetanus through the soil, structural debris (especially dirty nails), and human and animal feces.

Tetanus is a serious but preventable disease that causes severe muscle spasms, lockjaw and even death.

If you have not received a tetanus shot in the last 10 years or do not remember the date of your last vaccination, contact your health care provider.

If you get a cut or an open wound while working with storm debris, wash it thoroughly with soap and warm, clean water to avoid infection. Apply an antibiotic ointment. For more serious wounds that develop redness, swelling, drainage or do not stop bleeding, seek immediate medical attention.

Tetanus has long been identified as a top health concern for anyone working in disaster recovery areas. Protect yourself and your family from tetanus by getting a tetanus shot now if you have not received one in the last 10 years.

FEMA UPDATE FOR BAYTOWN RESIDENTS

Baytown resident's, whose homes have been damaged by IKE, may be eligible for temporary housing assistance, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). FEMA, at the request of the State of Texas, will activate its transitional sheltering initiative to allow eligible Ike evacuees from Texas, who cannot return to their homes, to stay in hotels or motels until it is safe for them go home.

FEMA will pay for the lodging directly to hotels and motels. A listing of participating hotels is available online at www.FEMAEvacHotels.com.

This assistance is intended to provide a more appropriate extended sheltering environment to evacuees who cannot return home because their neighborhoods are inaccessible or because their homes are uninhabitable due to damage from IKE. Power outage alone is NOT an approved basis for assistance in this program: there must be damage which makes the home uninhabitable. The initial period of assistance is from September 14, 2008 to October 14, 2008. This program will not reimburse applicants for hotel expenses prior to September 14th. Applicants are responsible for their own meals and for any lodging costs above the authorized allowance.

In order to get reimbursement, evacuees MUST APPLY for federal assistance through FEMA either online at www.fema.gov or by calling the FEMA toll-free call centers at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585. Eligible evacuees must fit the following criteria:

1. FEMA must be able to verify the identity of the evacuee;

2. The primary residence of the evacuee must be in one of the counties that has been designated a disaster area;

3. The primary residence is unlivable due to damage.

Because of the high number of calls FEMA is receiving, applicants must be patient and should expect long wait times. The hotline is open 24 hours. Applicants are strongly encouraged to register online if at all possible.

I remember that at one time airport transportation was a problem and a couple of the airlines were running their own shuttles to get people to hotels. I don't know if that's still true.

We haven't heard from many HAIFers who work at IAH, so your best bet at this point is to try to find a phone number on the IAH web site and have a rental car ready as a backup.

I'm hopeful that because there is power at either end of my block that I will have power soon but musicman's post was not encouraging. If I don't have power by friday I will begin planning insurgent attacks on the neighbor across the street with the whole house genset who has not so much as offerred to let us store some food in is 10,000 dollar subzero fridge. He's also never offered me a ride in his turbo porsche or either of his 2 harleys so I'm not surprised

Ooh, and people wonder why we hate the big new houses  All them selfish fancy people and their whole-house generators!

Redscare - if you need a place to do laundry and have a cold beer feel free to stop by. My garage apartment and house are on two separate electricity feeder lines. The garage got power back on Sunday, but I fear the house will take a while. Extension cords are wonderful things.

My husband got a taxi fron IAH yesterday with no problem. Lucky dog missed all the excitement, and all the cleanup. At least he gets the "camping in the house" experience.

Wow! Some neighbor. I can understand not letting you ride his harley or drive his GT Porsche, but no offer to store food? Gee.
