  2. That's terrible -- I must have just missed it (I was northbound exiting MacGregor right around that time)..

  4. Welcome to HAIF! Do you remember anything more about the restaurant? Was it a steakhouse?
  5. It's at 801 Chartres (at Rusk). The On Leong Merchants' Association moved out a while back but you can still see the outline of the lettering on the front of the building. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=801+Chartres+Street,+Houston,+TX&aq=0&sll=29.752977,-95.355384&sspn=0.006967,0.009645&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=801+Chartres+St,+Houston,+Texas+77003&ll=29.75307,-95.35532&spn=0.006967,0.009645&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=29.752981,-95.355386&panoid=qgPXsD08nMTJaCjqe7q4yw&cbp=12,98.38,,0,-4.71 http://news.tradingcharts.com/futures/0/2/159935620.html
  6. ^If that's the one then it's close to the Brunsville area we scoured a while back. The land between Maxine St. and the Loop may have contained part of that cemetery - now it's a large industrial storage lot.
  7. The Rutledge Apartments (1963) along Brays Bayou are now gone - set to open in August 2012 is the Village of Meyerland, a senior apartment community. http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2011/05/23/bridgewood-builds-meyerland-senior.html more here: http://arch-ive.org/archive/rutledge-apartments/
  8. Yuck...but no surprise. She wrote a follow up to an email received about the article: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ent/arts/gray/7583273.html I posted the GHPA notice about this in the River Oaks Shopping Center thread () but I think this deserves its own.
  9. Time - Friday, May 27, 7:00pm - 10:00pm Location - Tranquility Park http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=230103667005020
  10. ^I bow down to your memory/tracking skills...!
  11. It looks like it could have been the Trading Post club at 11215 Main (just south of present day Willowbend). From 1955: FWIW, the old Grant Motel (gone now too but was most recently the Palm Court Inn) claimed Elvis slept there:

  13. Yikes - or maybe the Binz or Chase Tower...
  14. I was sure I took pictures of the apartments back when I lived in Santa Rosa...about the same time as the theater was about to be torn down. I'll be on the hunt for them!
  15. ^Thanks for the information - neat to know they're the ones behind the Harbour. For those who haven't seen it, it's the old Hollywood Theater: http://www.arch-ive.org/hollywoodtheater.php
  16. Just a few to start out...a lot of these buildings are still hanging on, even the strip mall where Big Humphrey's Pizza/Burger Village and Dairy Queen No. 1 was.. Nipper Law Firm (a date issue - HCAD lists 1942 and I'm thinking it's newer than that) more: http://www.arch-ive.org/parkplace7654.php Park Place Washette (can anyone can confirm a mid 1980s rebuild of this washateria?) more: http://www.arch-ive.org/parkplace7902.php Park Place Pharmacy more: http://www.arch-ive.org/parkplace8000.php
  17. Chapultepec on Richmond used to be the "Gumbo King Club"
  18. Just to refresh...this is the site on the corner of Cambridge and Woodbury? Where the Katharine Mott designed house once was? This topic is a little rusty..
  19. Anyone take note of what's going on in this department?
  20. Gail - thank you for posting and welcome to HAIF. If you wouldn't mind, there would be plenty of folks here that would be interested in hearing about your time at the Montagu in the 1960s. As for Mr. Kalas, I'm not sure if he checks this message board any longer.
  21. Is that the current Rice Epicurean? I have blurry memories of the Apple Tree over there..
