  1. Here's a view of the south face existing.
  2. Wednesdays are the farmer's market out in front of city hall, plenty of alternative lunch options and food trucks. The best lunch spots are street level but there's some good places in the tunnel too. My personal favs are: BK Meatball Co. Burger Guys Sophias (breakfast tacos) Treebeards (non-tunnel location) Zydecos Georgia Fresh Salata
  3. They cut down the giant palms on the property when they put up the job sign, the magnolias are probably next.
  4. The thing about ground floor retail is you are required to provide commercial parking and currently are not granted any parking credits from the potential customers above who would walk. You can use a limited ratio of off-site parking credits but good luck with getting an exception >20% anywhere outside of downtown or midtown, especially adjacent to a single family nab with inferior infrastructure. Likewise the fire ratings and security measures to keep tenants from committing inside jobs means that you're going to spend a lot of money over-engineering the ground floor envelope. This building is simply too small for such intricacies, unless you're just talking about a pocket dry cleaners storefront with 4 spaces out front. Btw it got approved.

  6. I've had good experiences with the B-cycle (even got the promo 1 yr rate for $40 bucks) but the bikes themselves are pretty clunky and hard to steer. I'm not complaining, my sister in NYC told me the Citibike bikeshare they have there has bike terminals that go dead and wont let you check in or out a bike. Apparently they're having software issues.
  7. Looks like that's where the proposed bldg (above the parking garage) would have "sky connected" to the existing bldg.
  8. Last Friday I saw an approved sewer disconnect notice and over the weekend saw a crew cleaning out in the interior. Then this morning I saw one lane of Milam closed for an electrical crew from the city working on the bldg. I'll see if I can snap a pic on my way home tonight. This used to be an auto-repair shop from ~1940's.
  9. Hope they keep/refurbish the "Savoy Houston" signage but it's probably a goner.
  10. I like the guy that plays the trumpet out in front of the Sakowitz garage around lunchtime. The block is pretty much tied up with whatever the owner of 1010 Lamar wants to do since they have coupled their tower with the Sakowitz garage.
  11. I just take up the whole lane and if I collect some followers I will peel off at an appropriate spot (like a crosswalk) and let them pass. I also get the occasional "i'm gonna kill you with my car" driver but if you completely ignore'm they figure it out pretty quickly that there's literally 4 lane feeder roads paralleling Main and following you is the long way to get where they wanna go.
  12. I did this last year, which was fun but you're not going to be able to differentiate much music between the cacophony of several differing tempos clashing all at once. It's really more so a people watching spot. This will be my second time to go, last time was 2010 (which was a blast btw).
  13. In reference to Spanish Steps, I think the architect was trying to communicate how the stairwells will become an integral sectional aspect of the sunken lobby/tunnel entrance. A more apt reference would be the Prada store in NYC. Overall I think this is most exciting major development in downtown and once it's done I'm sure many will be in awe (not by it's height but by it's lighting effects, voyeuristic street face, and lobby design).
  14. No, it's all in the mullion details. 70's & 80's mullions look much thicker (and typically had exterior caulking for it's flashing) than the newer designs which usually have a proportional assortment of flashed interlocked detailing (most notably the use of striated spandrel glass) yielding a more varied facade relief in elevation. See for example the Metro bldg, the Leland bldg renovation, 1400 Louisiana, Hess tower, and the presumable design basis for the Capital Tower, 1000 Main St.
  15. The upper levels of 1400 Smith St. has had problems sheeting water off and it's blue glass has some pretty noticeable calcium deposits and what looks like some sort of funky mullion mold. It helps that it's neighboring towers are mostly stone clad, bringing it's glass facade to the forefront of perception but it's still a very 80's tower IMO.
  16. Along with the RV camper that been parked there for a couple years (presumably making meth).
  17. Any night renderings? Curious how they plan on doing the lighting (hopefully something similar to 1000 Main St.)
  18. Not a land hold, btw this is not the same William Harrison you linked to earlier. He's the youngest billionaire I know.
  19. Just a joke'n if you can't tell. I'm just sayin you don't know who's carrying and who's not and that's why folks ought to be more mindful.
  20. I only need to shoot the tires and make a police report. Also I can ride without using my hands and can shoot with one hand, so it's totally worth killing a criminal even if I get knocked off my bike. Sorry if you don't like being dished what your serving but if you think this proud Texan is just gonna let criminals threaten endanger my life with aggravated deadly conduct I got one question for ya then:
